Characterization of sexual dysfunctions is complex and often needs extensive clinical, psychological and psychiatric expertise to arrive at reliable diagnoses. The present volume illustrates various aspects involved in sexual (dys)functioning but also the complexity of the field. Premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, female interest/arousal disorder, hypogonadism, sexual side effects of antidepressants and circumcision are subject of the various contributions. The topics treated nicely illustrate the problems associated with sexual function and dysfunction, including lifestyle, biological, mental, sociocultural and religious aspects. This comprehensive book provides guidelines to help readers develop experience-based tools and approaches for smart engineering of knowledge, data and information. It does not attempt to offer ultimate answers, but instead presents ideas and a number of real-world case studies to explore and exemplify the complexities and challenges of modern knowledge engineering issues. It also increases readers’ awareness of the multifaceted interdisciplinary character of such issues to enable them to consider – in different ways – developing, evaluating, and supporting smart knowledge engineering systems that use DDNA technology based on experience.

Book Clinical Trials in Latin America Where Ethics and Business Clash

Download or read book Clinical Trials in Latin America Where Ethics and Business Clash written by Nuria Homedes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-29 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The outsourcing of clinical trials to Latin America by the transnational innovative pharmaceutical industry began about twenty years ago. Using archival information and field work in Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico and Peru, the authors discuss the regulatory contexts and the ethical dimensions of human experimentation in the region. More than 80% of all clinical trials in the region take place in these countries, and the European Medicines Agency has defined them as priority countries in Latin America. The authors raise questions about the quality of data obtained from the trials and the violation of human rights during their implementation. Their findings are presented in this volume, the first in-depth analysis of clinical trials in the region.

Book Communicating with Care

Download or read book Communicating with Care written by S. Bigi and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2016-08-25 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the start of studies on health communication, scholars were primarily concerned with showing the ethical implications of a new approach to care and with collecting evidence to demonstrate its greater effectiveness as opposed to the paternalistic and mechanistic paradigms. Well into the second decade of the 21st century, different issues need to be addressed. Aging populations and the spread of chronic diseases are challenging the sustainability of health care systems worldwide; increased awareness of health issues among the population and greater citizen participation seem to threaten clinicians’ authority. In this new scenario, it is acknowledged that the quality of verbal communication plays a crucial role, but it is still not clear how it impacts on the outcomes of care, which are its constitutive components and how it interacts with the institutional, cultural and social context of interactions. This book suggests that the time is ripe for a fresh start in health communication studies. As Debra Roter points out in her foreword, this proposal “is ambitious in attempting to integrate perspectives derived from pragmatics and argumentation theory with those derived from quantitative methods of medical interaction analysis and its prediction of outcomes”. On the other hand, as Giovanni Gobber explains in his foreword, “health communication can profit from an application of a performance-oriented linguistic analysis that pays attention to the role of the various relevant context factors in speech events related to specific activity types”. In this way, the open questions regarding communication in medical encounters are considered under a new light. The answers provided open up novel lines of research and provide an original perspective to face the new challenges in medical care.

Book Nature Inspired Design of Hybrid Intelligent Systems
