Book Welfare Services in the Netherlands and United Kingdom

Download or read book Welfare Services in the Netherlands and United Kingdom written by Sita Radhakrishnan and published by Northern Book Centre. This book was released on 1992 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years following World War II, the concept of State Welfare did seem to be the golden mean between Marxian revolution and laissez faire evolution in the human pursuit of social justice. Western democratic states that upheld the primacy of the individual and his liberty over that of the 'State' operationalized State responsibility for welfare on the basis of social policies compatible with their socio-political and economic systems. This resulted in the coming into existence of a large number of services rendered by the State to its citizens touching all aspects of their lives, cutting through informal, intermediary institutions, and developing a direct link with it. The focus of this study is on these services in two such states, i.e., the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Their provision and administration for ethnic minorities that form part of their national communities is dealt with in particular. The Netherlands and the United Kingdom have constitutional monarchical systems based on the sovereignty of the people. Liberalism is an underlying sociological base for their societies. Both had acquired overseas colonies which resulted in the settlement of people with ethnic origins different from their dominant group within their national communities. These factors make the two comparable. However, the ideological basis, social and economic forces and movements that led to the establishment of State welfare in the two states differ significantly. The study reveals that their particular ideological positions on State-Society relations have a significant impact on social policies adopted by them and in the modalities of their implementation. The British stand on assimilation in one dominant culture and the Dutch stand on integration with acceptance of pluralism throw up the genuine problems in the harmonization of social policy in a United Europe of the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychoanalysis has brought about a revolution in the understanding of religious phenomenon by exploring into the depth of our psyche. Its discoveries have thrown a flood of light on the multi-dimensional concept of religion. A study of psychonalysis with special reference to Freud, Adler, Jung and Fromm shows that it is in no way logically incompatible with the values of religion. Freud’s emphasis on Truth and Love, Adler’s vision of social-ties, Jung’s realization of self-transcendence through individuation and Formm’s Humanistic approach have given a comprehensive view of religion with new illuminations. Phychoanalysis has done to mankind a real service in ruthlessly exposing the unhealthy state of neurotic religion. It has attacked abuse, rather than the use of religion.

Book An Introduction to the Geography of Health

Download or read book An Introduction to the Geography of Health written by Helen Hazen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health issues such as the emergence of infectious diseases, the potential influence of global warming on human health, and the escalating strain of increasing longevity and chronic conditions on healthcare systems are of growing importance in an increasingly peopled and interconnected world. A geographic approach to the study of health offers a critical perspective to these issues, considering how changing relationships between people and their environments influence human health. An Introduction to the Geography of Health provides an accessible introduction to this rapidly growing field, covering theoretical and methodological background. The text is divided into three sections which consider distinct approaches and techniques related to health geographies. Section one introduces ecological approaches, with a focus on how natural and built environments affect human health. For instance, how have irrigation projects influenced the spread of water-borne diseases? How can modern healthcare settings, such as hospitals, affect the spread and evolution of pathogens? Section two discusses social aspects of health and healthcare, considering health as not merely a biological interaction between a pathogen and human host, but as a process that is situated among social factors which ultimately drive who suffers from what, and where disease occurs. Section three then considers spatial techniques and approaches to exploring health, giving special focus to the growing role of cartography and geographic information systems (GIS) in the study of health. This clearly written text contains a range of pedagogical features including a wealth of global case studies, discussion questions and suggestions for further reading at the end of each chapter, a colour plate section and over eighty diagrams and figures. The accompanying website also provides presentations, exercises, further resources, and tables and figures. This book is an essential introductory text for undergraduate students studying Geography, Health and Social Studies.

Attributes of the environment, man, his culture and society and their interaction shape the spatial structure which ultimately determine the pace of development. Unless transferential approach of resource exploitation is not changed to transformational one it is difficult to reduce the glaring disparity in development. Transformational approach is people oriented and nature oriented development concept, in which social justice, welfare, quality of life and environmental protection are kept at par with the economic growth.
