Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Education and the Rights of the People Medical colleges might be a great bement but since they often teach neither good sense nor decent nonsense they are not reliable. Professor Bigelow of Harvard Uni versity said, if he was sick he would rather have an old woman, or a young woman it good looking, than all the doctors in Boston. Ten learned medical men all diagnosis a case different - the man was in perfect health and fooled them all. Book A History of Medical Education

Download or read book A History of Medical Education written by Theodor Puschmann and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Medical Education: From the Most Remote to the Most Recent Times The historical development of medical teaching exhibits a character similar to that of medical science in general. Necessity, the inventive Instructor Of Mankind, furnished the occasion, as indeed hippokrates* says, for the first attempts at healing. The combative habits of rude barbarians, whose favourite pursuits were hunting and war, entailed the infliction of wounds for which help was demanded. Sympathizing friends and fellow-soldiers tended the hurts, washing out the wounds and dressing them with cooling herbs. Soon there arose a select few, who investigating the healing properties of plants, turned their knowledge Of this subject to account for the benefit of their neighbours. If they were naturally endowed with the gifts required for Observing Nature they no doubt Soon made the attempt, as occasion Offered, to study the fundamental character of the wounds which they undertook to treat. In this way gradually a kind of medical craft was formed, the members of which, by empirical methods, arrived at remarkable dexterity in healing external injuries. In the case of internal affections, particularly however in the case of epidemics, the causes Of which are not so manifest as those of external injuries, recourse was had for counsel to those who, in that early period of civilization, passed. Book Higher Medical Education

Download or read book Higher Medical Education written by William Pepper and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Higher Medical Education: The True Interest of the Public and the Profession; Two Addresses Delivered Before the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania on October 1, 1877, and October 2, 1898 The first of these Addresses was delivered at the opening of the one hundred and twelfth course of lectures in the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania. As extensive and radical changes had been made in the plan of medical teaching in that school, it seemed proper that a full statement should be given of the reasons for such reforms. An attempt was made, therefore, to present fairly the then position of medical teaching in America, to point out its chief defects, and to indicate the causes that had led to them, and the evils to which they in turn gave rise. The second Address was delivered sixteen years later, in October, 1893, at the opening of the Four Years' Course of Medical Study. It is hoped it may serve to indicate the advances effected in the interval, and also the lines along which farther progress should be made. In order to enable the accuracy of the statements in these Addresses to be tested, as well as to afford information which may be of value to those specially interested in this subject, brief synopses of the state of medical education in various countries in 1877 and in 1893 have been prepared. These are given in three Appendices. The first (No. I., pp. 44-69) is that originally compiled for the address of 1877. It was based upon data secured in response to a series of questions forwarded through the Department of State at Washington to the proper officials in the respective countries. Book Medical Education and Practice in All Parts of the World Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Education and Practice in All Parts of the World From my own personal experience of British and Continental schools I can bear testimony to the vast superiority of the laboratory arrangements of the latter over those of the former. This grave defect in our system of medical education should be amongst the first to be remedied by the framers of our new medical laws. The fees for attendance at the schools and hos pitale need also to be considerably lessened, thus bringing within reach of rich and poor alike the Opportunity of entering the profession. Such liberal reforms as these would contribute no less to the advance ment of science than to the comfort and convenience of the community. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Higher Medical Education and the Need of Its Endowment What preparation should a student bring to the study of medicine? It is highly desirable, in my judgment, that he should be liberally educated; that is, he should possess a degree in arts or in science which shall be an index of that knowledge and culture which, apart from any immediate bearing upon professional studies, are recognized as entitling their possessor to be ranked among liberally educated men. Scientific studies have acquired the right to rank with classic studies in afford ing this liberal culture; but the humanities should have a fair share of attention at this period of education. Book Democracy of Education in Medicine Classic Reprint

Download or read book Democracy of Education in Medicine Classic Reprint written by Fernand Henrotin and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Democracy of Education in Medicine More than fourteen years ago, at the solicitation of several of my medical friends, I became a member of the faculty of a post-graduate medical school. I acceded to their request more out of regard for the men engaged in the work than from my own conviction that such a school was needed, or that it would meet any demand from practitioners for advanced study. I well remember the doubt raised in my mind by my experience as a teacher in the clinics, as to the advisability of such instruction. We were apparently encouraging men to undertake work for which they were imperfectly equipped by previous training; on the other hand, I felt much sympathy for the pathetic attitude of these men in their sincere desire for more knowledge. As the institution prospered and the quality of the students improved my doubts disappeared, and my conviction is now well established that there is a large and growing opportunity for post-graduate medical instruction of the proper type.
