  • Pages : 248 pages

Download or read book The BSE Inquiry written by Lord Nicholas Phillips and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explains the relevant legislative and executive framework which was in place when BSE was identified at the end of 1986, and the changes to this framework up to 20th March 1996 that were brought about by factors not connected to BSE. One example of this was the continuing integration with Europe, which required, amongst other things, a common standard of meat hygiene within the Single Market. This was the background against which policy makers had to consider what action to take to deal with the perceived hazards from BSE and what control measures could be introduced. The control measures taken are described in detail in volumes 3-7. The report shows how the legislation controlled processes and activities rather than complete industries or industrial sectors. At any given time, the legislation affecting a sector such as agriculture consisted of interwoven Acts, Orders and Regulations each designed to deal with specific matters. The interwoven powers affected different sectors to varying degrees with some, such as the legislative control over animal feeding stuffs, being extremely detailed. Legislation passed by Parliament did not necessarily apply throughout the UK. Legislation specific to Scotland and Northern is mentioned where appropriate and any differences are described.

Book Regulating Medicines in Europe

Download or read book Regulating Medicines in Europe written by John Abraham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Book explains and investigates how medicines are controlled in Europe, especially the EU. Based on penetrating documentary and interview research with the pharmaceutical industry, regulators and consumer organisations,it provides the first major critical examination of the new Europeanised systems of medicine regulation. The authors argue that the drive to produce and approve more drugs more quickly for a single European market dominates other considerations, such as improvements in democratic accountability, the independence of regulators and scientific expertise from commercial interests, and drug safety testing and surveillance.

Book Challenges of Pharmacoeconomics in Global Health Arena

This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pace of globalization has significantly accelerated since the end of the Cold War Era in 1989. These changes profoundly affected health care systems worldwide. Health policy makers increasingly started facing new harsh challenges in their uneasy task to provide universal health coverage and decent equity of access to medical services. Among the most prominent demand-side issues are extended longevity joined with population aging, rise of non-communicable diseases, and growing patient expectations. Supply-side causes are gains in societal welfare and living standards, technological innovation in medicine and continuing rapid urbanization in developing world regions. Successful insurance-based risk sharing agreements made drug dispensing and medical service provision cheap or virtually free at the point of consumption in most OECD and many middle-income countries. Coupled with massive build-up of workforce capacities and strengthening of primary care and hospital networks, all these factors contributed to the “supplier induced demand” phenomenon. There is straightforward historical evidence of long-term growth in pharmaceutical and overall health spending both in absolute and GDP% terms worldwide. The accumulated constraints deriving from skyrocketing costs of care were felt in many areas of clinical medicine even among the richest societies. Cardinal examples of expensive and hardly affordable therapeutic areas are orphan drugs indicated to treat rare diseases and targeted biologicals used in autoimmune disorders and cancer. Last but not least, is troubled and frequently denied access to even essential generic pharmaceuticals still taking place in many nations. This appears to be particularly the case among the world's poor and under-served citizens residing in rural and suburban areas of low- and middle-income countries. To a large extent, these difficulties are worsened by lack of evidence-based resource allocation strategies and less sustainable financing strategies.
