Book The Confederate Navy Medical Corps

Download or read book The Confederate Navy Medical Corps written by Guy R. Hasegawa and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-03-15 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Confederate Navy's medical service is usually overlooked in histories of the Civil War, yet it was vital in maintaining the fighting strength of the South's navy and marine corps. Confederate medical officers not only manned war vessels, they staffed navy yards and land-based hospitals, gathered supplies, participated in raids, examined recruits, and even served at defensive shore batteries. Many such officers had served in the United States Navy, while others were recruited from civil life. Enlisted personnel and civilian physicians also helped the navy provide medical care--used in managing battle wounds and other injuries but more often devoted to preventing and treating disease. Malaria was particularly common among sailors and marines stationed in the swampy regions of the South. This book, the first devoted entirely to the medical corps of the Confederate navy, provides a carefully researched look at the men, structure, facilities, and activities of the organization. A complete list of men known to have been commissioned as naval medical officers is included.

Book Civil War Pharmacy

  • Author : Michael A Flannery
  • Publisher : SIU Press
  • Release : 2017-06-16
  • ISBN : 080933593X
  • Pages : 338 pages

Download or read book Civil War Pharmacy written by Michael A Flannery and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2017-06-16 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Civil War began, the U.S. pharmaceutical industry was concentrated almost exclusively in Philadelphia and was dominated by just a few major firms; when the war ended, it was poised to expand nationwide. Civil War Pharmacy is the first book to delineate how the growing field of pharmacy gained respect and traction in, and even distinction from, the medical world because of the large-scale manufacture and dispersion of drug supplies and therapeutics during the Civil War. In this second edition, Flannery captures the full societal involvement in drug provision, on both the Union and Confederate sides, and places it within the context of what was then assumed about health and healing. He examines the roles of physicians, hospital stewards, and nurses—both male and female—and analyzes how the blockade of Southern ports meant fewer pharmaceutical supplies were available for Confederate soldiers, resulting in reduced Confederate troop strength. Flannery provides a thorough overview of the professional, economic, and military factors comprising pharmacy from 1861 to 1865 and includes the long-term consequences of the war for the pharmaceutical profession. Winner (first edition), Archivists and Librarians in the History of the Health Sciences, Best Book Award

Book The Confederate Hospitals of Madison Georgia their records histories 1861 1865

Download or read book The Confederate Hospitals of Madison Georgia their records histories 1861 1865 written by Bonnie P. (Patsy) Harris and published by Bonnie P. (Patsy) Harris. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Madison, Georgia was a hoppin' place while it hosted three (and later a fourth) Confederate hospitals during the eight months before their final retreat in July 1864. Every few days the train depot was a flurry of activity as surgeons, attendants, and locals unloaded hundreds of sick and wounded soldiers fresh from the battles in Tennessee and North Georgia. Most of the records of their care were saved by the Director of Hospitals of the Army of Tennessee and then ferreted out 140 years later by the author from collections scattered across many states. This book includes verbatim transcriptions of those documents, the subsequent hospital histories, surgeon biographies, and thousands of names in hundreds of regiments.

Book Women at the Front

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jane E. Schultz
  • Publisher : Univ of North Carolina Press
  • Release : 2005-12-15
  • ISBN : 0807864153
  • Pages : 377 pages

Download or read book Women at the Front written by Jane E. Schultz and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2005-12-15 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As many as 20,000 women worked in Union and Confederate hospitals during America's bloodiest war. Black and white, and from various social classes, these women served as nurses, administrators, matrons, seamstresses, cooks, laundresses, and custodial workers. Jane E. Schultz provides the first full history of these female relief workers, showing how the domestic and military arenas merged in Civil War America, blurring the line between homefront and battlefront. Schultz uses government records, private manuscripts, and published sources by and about women hospital workers, some of whom are familiar--such as Dorothea Dix, Clara Barton, Louisa May Alcott, and Sojourner Truth--but most of whom are not well-known. Examining the lives and legacies of these women, Schultz considers who they were, how they became involved in wartime hospital work, how they adjusted to it, and how they challenged it. She demonstrates that class, race, and gender roles linked female workers with soldiers, both black and white, but became sites of conflict between the women and doctors and even among themselves. Schultz also explores the women's postwar lives--their professional and domestic choices, their pursuit of pensions, and their memorials to the war in published narratives. Surprisingly few parlayed their war experience into postwar medical work, and their extremely varied postwar experiences, Schultz argues, defy any simple narrative of pre-professionalism, triumphalism, or conciliation.
