Book Handbook of Work Family Integration

Download or read book Handbook of Work Family Integration written by Karen Korabik and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2011-04-28 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's industrialized societies, the majority of parents work full time while caring for and raising their children and managing household upkeep, trying to keep a precarious balance of fulfilling multiple roles as parent, worker, friend, & child. Increasingly demands of the workplace such as early or late hours, travel, commute, relocation, etc. conflict with the needs of being a parent. At the same time, it is through work that people increasingly define their identity and self-worth, and which provides the opportunity for personal growth, interaction with friends and colleagues, and which provides the income and benefits on which the family subsists. The interface between work and family is an area of increasing research, in terms of understanding stress, job burn out, self-esteem, gender roles, parenting behaviors, and how each facet affects the others. The research in this area has been widely scattered in journals in psychology, family studies, business, sociology, health, and economics, and presented in diverse conferences (e.g., APA, SIOP, Academy of Management). It is difficult for experts in the field to keep up with everything they need to know, with the information dispersed. This Handbook will fill this gap by synthesizing theory, research, policy, and workplace practice/organizational policy issues in one place. The book will be useful as a reference for researchers in the area, as a guide to practitioners and policy makers, and as a resource for teaching in both undergraduate and graduate courses.

Job satisfaction is also significant predictor of affective commitment and career commitment. The results also indicate that job satisfaction mediates the relationship between family-work enrichment and affective commitment and career commitment.Novelty - Studies on individual outcomes of family-work enrichment have not been explicitly whether will improve the role in the sending domain (family/non work outcomes) or receiving domain (work outcomes). Furthermore, the number of studies that distinguish the outcomes of family-work enrichment is limited. This study examine the outcomes of family-work enrichment on receiving role domain (work outcomes).Type of Paper: Empirical.

Book The Work Family Interface in Global Context

Download or read book The Work Family Interface in Global Context written by Karen Korabik and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-04-07 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a sweeping, ten country study, The Work-Family Interface in Global Context comprises the most comprehensive and rigorous cross-cultural study of the work-family interface to date. Just as work-family conflict is associated with negative consequences for workers, organizations, and societies, so too can the work and family domains interact positively to enhance or enrich one another. Drawing on qualitative, quantitative, and policy-based data, chapters in this collection explore the influence of culture on the work-family interface in order to help researchers and managers understand the applicability of work-family models in a variety of contexts and further conceptualize work-family interactions through the development of a more universal knowledge. Book The Mediating Effects of Work life Balance Self efficacy on the Relationships Between Work family Conflict and Job Satisfaction

Download or read book The Mediating Effects of Work life Balance Self efficacy on the Relationships Between Work family Conflict and Job Satisfaction written by Xi Wen Chan and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to evolving gender roles and the rise of non-traditional families, both men and women face the challenge of balancing work and family roles in Australia today. Coupled with intensifying work pressures and the declining quality of home and community life, the balancing act between work and family consequently leads to work-family conflict. Research has shown that work-family conflict is responsible for a variety of negative individual and organisational outcomes, including lowered job satisfaction. With the potential costs to organisations that lowered job satisfaction produces, this study sought to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between work-family conflict and job satisfaction by investigating the role of self-efficacy in the management of pressures emanating from work and home. In doing so, the present study recognised the multi-dimensionality of work-family conflict by assessing time-based, strain-based, and behaviour-based work-to-family conflict (WFC), and time-based, strain-based, and behaviour-based family-to-work conflict (FWC). Self-efficacy has become a significant topic of investigation within the work-family literature, primarily because self-efficacy beliefs are important aspects of human motivation and behaviour. Accordingly, self-efficacy determines if individuals are able to persist and cope with adversity and challenges, such as those relating to work-family conflict. Despite the importance of domain specificity with regards to self-efficacy, management scholars continue to treat self-efficacy as a generalised construct. Therefore, drawing on the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) and work-life balance literature, the current research first sought to empirically validate the newly-developed work-life balance self-efficacy (WLBSE) scale using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modelling (SEM). WLBSE, a domain-specific self-efficacy construct, correspondingly refers to the belief individuals have in their own abilities to manage work and non-work responsibilities. Having validated the five-item WLBSE scale, it was hypothesised that WLBSE beliefs would fully mediate the relationships between the six dimensions of work-family conflict and job satisfaction. In applying the theoretical framework of the SCT, specifically, the social-cognitive concept of self-efficacy, it is postulated that building a strong sense of WLBSE would reduce vulnerability to work-family conflict, which in turn leads to higher job satisfaction. That is to say, WLBSE is the explanatory variable that accounts substantively for the underlying causal nature of the work-family conflict-job satisfaction relationships. The study adopted a longitudinal design, in which self-reported data were collected on two occasions 12 months apart through an online questionnaire. The initial sample consisted of 1,134 respondents from four organisations within Australia. After performing data screening, CFA and SEM were conducted to test the research hypotheses. CFA showed that there was better fit for an eight-factor than a four-factor or one-factor measurement model, the former of which comprised the six dimensions of work-family conflict, as well as the uni-dimensional WLBSE and job satisfaction constructs. Subsequent cross-sectional and longitudinal tests of the hypothesised structural model showed that the proposed model was a good fit to the observed data, and WLBSE was shown to fully mediate the relationships between all three forms of WFC and job satisfaction. By incorporating the multi-dimensionality of work-family conflict and validating the newly-developed WLBSE scale, the study sought to provide a general framework of the underlying cognitive mechanisms linking work-family conflict to job satisfaction. Theoretical implications of the findings for SCT are discussed. From a practical standpoint, the study offers empirical evidence that addressing work-family conflict through strengthening WLBSE can enhance job satisfaction. The limitations and directions for future research are discussed in the final chapter of this study.

Book Evidence Based Positive Psychological Interventions in Multi Cultural Contexts

Download or read book Evidence Based Positive Psychological Interventions in Multi Cultural Contexts written by Llewellyn Ellardus Van Zyl and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents clearly defined and described evidence-based positive psychology interventions (PPIs), which have been validated in multi-cultural contexts. It discusses validated PPIs which have been shown to have a significant impact in both clinical and real-world settings. From the late 1990s, there has been an upsurge in popular psychological “self-help” publications drawing from processes and principles of positive psychology. These publications are based on clinically validated PPI studies and translated in a “consumer friendly” manner. However, in these popular works the intervention methods are significantly altered from the original forms, and the contexts of the consumers are meaningfully different from those of the original study populations, the impact on outcome variables are often misinterpreted or over-inflated, and incorrect outcome variables are targeted. Original research articles also do not extensively discuss the content of the interventions, but merely present short descriptions of the PPI. As such, the intervention content cannot accurately be translated into practice. Hence, the need for this volume which discusses in depth how validated PPIs in various multi-cultural contexts work in both clinical and real-world settings.
