Book Creation Migration and Conquest

Download or read book Creation Migration and Conquest written by Fabienne L. Michelet and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-06-08 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creation, Migration, and Conquest: Imaginary Geography and Sense of Space in Old English Literature explores the Anglo-Saxons' spatial imaginaire; tracing its political, literary, and intellectual backgrounds and analysing how this imaginaire shapes perceptions and representations of geographical space. The book elaborates new interpretative paradigms, drawing on the work of continental scholars and literary critics, and on complementing interdisciplinary scholarship of medieval imaginary spaces and their representations. It gathers evidence from both Old English verse and historico-geographical documents, and focuses on the juncture between traditional scientific learning and the symbolic values attributed to space and orientation. Combining close reading with an original theoretical model, Creation, Migration, and Conquest offers innovative interpretations of celebrated texts and highlights the links between place, identity, and collective identity.

"Christina Lee examines the place of food and feasting in funeral rituals from the earliest period to the eleventh century, considering the changes and transformations that occurred during this time. She draws on a wide range of sources, from archaeological evidence to the existing texts; she is concerned particularly to look at representations of funeral feasting and how it functioned as a tool for memory, shedding light on the relationship between the living and the dead." -- Prové de l'editor.

Book Translation re Creation

Download or read book Translation re Creation written by Duncan Poupard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of European-language translations of Naxi ritual manuscripts, the ritual literature of a small ethnic group living in southwest China’s Yunnan Province. The author discusses the translations into European languages (in English, French and German) from the late nineteenth century to the second half of the twentieth century, revealing a history of fragmentary yet interconnected translation efforts in the West. By exploring this network, he shows how translation can be understood as a metonymic “recreation” of textual worlds. As Naxi manuscripts are semi-oral texts representing an oral-formulaic tradition, their translation involves a metonymic relay of partial incorporations from manuscript/image to reading/spoken language. Therefore, the book engages in a series of textual excavations to uncover the previously occluded contemporaneous readings that would have led to the translations we can consult today, particularly in an attempt to understand how the Naxi literature came to be part of Ezra Pound’s Cantos. Scholars in the field of ethnic minority literature in China and translation studies will find this book beneficial, and it will make new contributions to comparative literature between the East and West.

Book The Aesthetics of Nostalgia

Download or read book The Aesthetics of Nostalgia written by Renee R. Trilling and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-01-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heroic poetry was central to the construction of Anglo-Saxon values, beliefs, and community identity and its subject matter is often analyzed as a window into Anglo-Saxon life. However, these poems are works of art as well as vehicles for ideology. Aesthetics of Nostalgia reads Anglo-Saxon historical verse in terms of how its aesthetic form interacted with the culture and politics of the period. Examining the distinctive poetic techniques found in vernacular historic poetry, Renée R. Trilling argues that the literary construction of heroic poetry promoted specific kinds of historical understanding in early medieval England, distinct from linear and teleological perceptions of the past. The Aesthetics of Nostalgia surveys Anglo-Saxon literary culture from the age of Bede to the decades following the Norman Conquest in order to explore its cultural impact through both its content and its form.

Book History of Linguistic Thought in the Early Middle Ages

Download or read book History of Linguistic Thought in the Early Middle Ages written by Vivien Law and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surveys of linguistics in the Middle Ages often begin with the twelfth century, dismissing the preceding six centuries as 'devoid of originality' or 'dependent upon Donatus and Priscian'. This collection of articles devoted to linguistics in the early Middle Ages attempts to redress the balance by presenting a variety of approaches to new and controversial questions. The volume opens with a study of the historiography of early medieval grammar, with a bibliography of primary and secondary literature. The history of linguistic doctrine is discussed in articles dealing with Virgilius Maro Grammaticus, with the Irish contribution to the analysis of Latin, and with the Carolingian grammarians. A paper discussing a grammar from late Anglo-Saxon England (Beatus quid est) offers new insights into pedagogical techniques and the integration of literary texts into grammar teaching. The attitudes towards varieties of Latin in late antique and early medieval grammars are discussed in a wider context of cultural history. Finally, the volume includes two articles on the transmission of the grammars of the later Roman Empire to the early Middle Ages (Priscian and Dynamius).

Book The Old English Translation of Bede s Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum in its Historical and Cultural Context

Download or read book The Old English Translation of Bede s Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum in its Historical and Cultural Context written by Andreas Lemke and published by Göttingen University Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did King Alfred the Great commission the Old English translation of Bede’s Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum, probably the masterpiece of medieval Anglo-Latin Literature, as part of his famous program of translation to educate the Anglo-Saxons? Was the Old English Historia, by any chance, a political and religious manifesto for the emerging ‘Kingdom of the Anglo-Saxons’? Do we deal with the literary cornerstone of a nascent English identity at a time when the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms were threatened by a common enemy: the Vikings? Andreas Lemke seeks to answer these questions – among others – in his recent publication. He presents us with a unique compendium of interdisciplinary approaches to the subject and sheds new light on the Old English translation of the Historia in a way that will fascinate scholars of Literature, Language, Philology and History.
