Book excerpt: The stoichiometric reactions of metal complexes which parallel probable steps in the metal catalyzed reduction of CO are being investigated. It is hoped that the study of these model reactions will lead to an understanding of the structural factors influencing these individual reaction steps. The information obtained should be useful in the design and discovery of homogeneous catalysts for the reduction of CO to hydrocarbons. We have studied metal formyl complexes which may be involved in the initiation step in CO reduction and have compared metal formyl compounds with metal acetyl compounds. We have found that the structure and kinetic stability of metal formyl compounds are very similar to metal acetyl compounds. However, metal formyl compounds are thermodynamically much less stable than metal acetyl compounds towards decarbonylation. Hydride donation reactions of metal formyl compounds have been discovered. A neutral metal formyl compound has been discovered and its reactions have been investigated. Preparation of (C5H5)Re(CO)(NO)(CH2OH), the first authentic example of a hydroxymethyl metal compound, was accomplished and studies of its reactions with acid, with base, with CO, and with H2 were begun.

Book excerpt: Mechanistic schemes for the metal surface catalyzed reduction of carbon monoxide to methanol and hydrocarbons have been proposed and the feasibility of these mechanisms are being tested by preparing and studying the chemistry of metal clusters which resemble the proposed surface intermediates. In an effort to prepare clusters with bound formyl groups, Os/sub 3/(CO)/sub 12/ and IR/sub 4/(CO)/sub 12/ have been treated with Li(BH(O-i-Pr)/sub 3/). Evidence for a formyl intermediate has been obtained with Os/sub 3/(CO)/sub 12/, and upon acidification of solutions containing this species, the new cluster Os/sub 3/(CO)/sub 11/CH/sub 2/ is isolated. The CH/sub 2/ group derives by the stepwise reduction of CO, and experiments directed toward delineating the mechanism of this transformation are described. Treatment of Os/sub 3/(CO)/sub 11/CH/sub 2/ with H/sub 2/ at 70 to 80/sup 0/C yields CH/sub 4/, and thus the complete stoichiometric conversion of CO to CH/sub 4/ has been achieved on an Os/sub 3/ cluster. The new clusters (PPN) (HFeRu/sub 3/(CO)/sub 13/) and (PPN)(HFe/sub 2/Ru/sub 2/(CO)/sub 13/) (PPN/sup +/ = (Ph/sub 3/P)/sub 2/N/sup +/) have been prepared in an attempt to prepare analogs of (HFe/sub 4/(CO)/sub 13/)/sup -/ which possesses an unusually bound and presumable activated CO. The crystal structures of each of these new clusters have revealed no unusual CO bonding modes and instead they adopt structures with pseudo-tetrahedral metal frameworks. Several reactions have been conducted directed toward the preparation of alkyl and acyl substituted clusters and these are described. The reaction of a series of mixed-metal clusters with CO have been studied. Each readily fragments under a CO atmosphere and for H/sub 2/FeRu/sub 3/(CO)/sub 13/ the rate and mechanism of this reaction have been determined.

Indeed, this area of industrial catalysis has an extremely long history which stretches back well into the last century. The development and growth of catalytic oxi dation processes for the manufacture of commodities such as sulfuric acid and nitric acid can be viewed as indicators for the growth of the early and middle years of the entire inorganic chemical industry, and in an analogous fashion the manufacture of products such as phthalic anhydride, maleic anhydride and ethylene oxide has been central to the development of an organic chemical industry. We should all be able" to learn from history, and present-day scientists and technologists will find considerable benefit in following the account of the historical development of catalytic oxidation processes presented in Chapter I by Drs. G. Chinchen, P. Davies and R. J. Sampson. Alkenes are important intermediates in many processes in organic chemical industry. Being mostly petroleum derived, the alkene availability pattern does not necessar ily match consumption requirements and an alkene inter conversion process such as metathesis is clearly of in dustrial importance. In fact alkene metathesis, in addi tion to its industrial significance, poses an interesting mechanistic problem. upon which considerable effort has been expended in recent years and which is now fairly well understood.

This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.
