Book Evaluating Moisture Susceptibility of Asphalt Mixes

Download or read book Evaluating Moisture Susceptibility of Asphalt Mixes written by Elizabeth Rae Hunter and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research project utilized laboratory evaluations to study effects of freeze-thaw cycling on the tensile strength of eight Hot Mix Asphalt mixtures and to determine if the Georgia Loaded Wheel Tester could be utilized to measure moisture susceptibility of Hot Mix Asphalt mixtures. The evaluation involved eight Hot Mix Asphalt mixtures from combinations of two aggregate types and four asphalt-additive-aging possibilities. Laboratory testing was accomplished in the first phase with the production of 2.5 by 4 inch cores that were freeze-thaw cycled and tested for their indirect tensile strength following Wyoming modified AASHTO T283. The second phase was accomplished using 3 by 6 inch cores that were conditioned and tested for rutting using the Georgia Loaded Wheel Tester. Finally, a statistical analysis was performed to determine if performance of the various mixtures was significantly different in groups of asphalt types and to determine if the Georgia Loaded Wheel Tester was a viable measurement tool for moisture susceptibility.

Book Guidelines for Implementing NCHRP 1 37A M E Design Procedures Literature review

Download or read book Guidelines for Implementing NCHRP 1 37A M E Design Procedures Literature review written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highway agencies across the nation are moving towards implementation of the new AASHTO Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) for pavement design. The benefits of implementing the MEPDG for routine use in Ohio includes (1) achieving more cost effective and reliable pavement designs, (2) lower initial and life cycle costs to the agency, and (3) reduced highway user impact due to lane closures for maintenance and rehabilitation of pavements. Implementation of the MEPDG is a process that requires time and agency resources (staffing, training, testing facilities including equipment, and so on). A key requirement is validating the MEPDG's nationally calibrated pavement distress and smoothness prediction models when applied under Ohio conditions and performing local calibration if needed. Feasibility of using the MEPDG's national models in Ohio was investigated under this study using data from a limited number of LTPP projects located in Ohio. Results based on limited data showed inadequate goodness of fit and significant bias in a number of the MEPDG new HMA pavement and JPCP performance prediction models. Limited recalibration of these models showed promising results indicating that a full-scale recalibration effort using a more extensive database assembled from projects located throughout the state is feasible.

Book Comparison and Definition of State DOT s Practices in Selection of Materials for Pavements

Download or read book Comparison and Definition of State DOT s Practices in Selection of Materials for Pavements written by Arudi Rajagopal and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the details of a study conducted by Infrastructure Management and Engineering (INFRAME) to review Ohio Department of Transportation's (ODOT's) current pavement material selection practices and suggest improvements where necessary. The present study was initiated by ODOT's Office of Materials Management as part of its continuing effort to improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of the materials used to construct pavements in Ohio. This report synthesizes the state-of-thepractice review of pavement materials selection procedures and criteria in Ohio and other State Department of Transportation. The study was conducted in three parts: (i) a review of the literature, (ii) a survey of state DOT.s, and (iii) a critical review of ODOT practices, including recommendations for improvement. The results of the literature review and the survey of the states (presented as an interactive computer database) will primarily be of interest to the ODOT technical staff who are involved in the day-to-day details of the materials selection process. The critical review of ODOT's practices will be of interest to ODOT managers responsible for charting the future course of the program. No significant changes in ODOT's material selection procedures are needed. Indeed, a review of ODOT's procedures, in comparison to the practices presented in the published literature and described in a survey of states agencies (conducted as a part of this study), conveys an extremely positive impression, which reflects favorably upon the department as a whole. The Office of Materials Management provides necessary support services and at the same time constantly strives to identify areas in need of improvement. The principal recommendations of the study are that two asphalt materials (foamed asphalt and warm mix asphalt), several recycled materials, and an improved aggregate test procedure (the Micro Deval procedure) be further evaluated to determine their potential for providing better performing and/or more economical Ohio pavements.
