Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mechanics of Running Skylines The problem of determining tensions in the lines due to load can be solved by analysis of the system with weightless lines. Figure shows a free body diagram of the running skyline carriage with weightless lines. This diagram represents both the single main line systems and those employing a main line plus a line for pulling slack or opening grapples. Since only the main line supports the load, the slack-pulling or opening line is ignored in the analysis. Figure -free body diagram of running skyline carriage. TI and T2 are tension in the upper lines and tension in the lower lines due to load, and W is the weight of the carriage and the logs. The methods available for these computa tions have been either hand procedures or digital computer solutions for the specific configurations of a log load suspended free of the ground or in frictionless contact with level ground. The more typical operation, however, drags one end of the log load along the ground. The dragging con figuration, considered in this paper, can influence the load - carrying capability of a running skyline significantly.
