Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mechanics for the Upper School Considerable space is devoted to practical applications. Throughout the book there are references to the automobile, the airplane, the base-ball curve and other familiar subjects. Indeed some may be disposed to criticise the amount of attention given to these matters, especially in the chapter on machines. But they are all interesting illustrations of mechanical principles and are of the greateet interest to our young people. For these reasons they are included, certainly not to supply material for written examinations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mechanics: A School Course, Fourth Impression There has been in recent years a movement among teachers of Mathematics in the direction of practical work, and a general desire that this movement should extend to the teaching a Mechanics. There are already many textbooks treating the subject from a mathematical standpoint, and keeping practice in the background. There are also, on the other hand, books written for the mechanical laboratory, which are chiefly concerned with Statics. The writer has found that Kinetics as well as Statics may be helped immensely by experimental work, and that the trouble involved in the preparation of lecture-experiments is amply repaid by the clearer notions gained by students on such points as acceleration, energy, and momentum. The lecture-experiments in this book can be performed in any ordinary class-room, and the practical work, which it is desirable that every student should do for himself, does not require expensive fittings. The question whether Kinetics or Statics should come first must depend very much on the pupil's age and attainments. There is a great deal to be said for beginning with Kinetics; and the writer believes that for students of sixteen with fair mathematical ability this is the right course. At the same time it may be possible for the laboratory work in Statics to proceed concurrently with the Kinetics, in which the teacher's assistance is more necessary. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mechanics for the Upper School In the present work the subject is approached from the experimental and observational side, and continual reference is made to things used in daily life. Considerable space is devoted to practical applications. Throughout the book there are references to the automobile, the airplane, the base-ball curve and other familiar subjects. Indeed some may be disposed to criticise the amount of attention given to these matters, especially in the chapter on machines. But they are all interesting illustrations of mechanical principles and are of the greatest interest to our young people. For these reasons they are included, certainly not to supply material for written examinations. Our sincere thanks are due to Professors A. L. Clark and J. K. Robertson, of Queen's University, who read most of the manuscript of the book, and offered many excellent suggestions. Valuable assistance was also given by Professor F. B. Kenrick, of the Department of Chemistry, and Professor G. A. Cornish, of the Faculty of Education, University of Toronto, in the preparation of the chapter on Surface Tension. These subjects are designated in the table of con tents by being printed in italics; and they will be found to be unnecessary in enabling the student to comprehend those which follow. Book Mechanics Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mechanics T is a common complaint that though the principles Of Mechanics are the simplest and the earliest to be discovered in the whole range of Science, and moreover are directly illustrated in almost every act of our lives, more difficulty is found in giving beginners a real grip of them than with any other branch of Physics. This I attribute largely to the way in which the text-books deal with the subject. The student usually Opens the book upon a chapter in which such leading concepts as matter, force, mass, particle, rigid body, smooth body are treated in definitions of a line or two each, before he sees any reason for their introduction at all. He is probably warned that philosophers are not agreed about the nature of matter; that motion is purely relative; that force is a misleading idea borrowed from our muscular sensations and better got rid of; and that no such things as mathematical particles, rigid bodies and smooth bodies exist in nature. He naturally concludes that Mechanics is an abstruse subject having nothing to do with realities or common sense. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Mechanics: A Text-Book for Colleges and Technical Schools Such a method is certainly calculated to limber up our theories and put them all at work, ' the pragmatici method our friends the philosophers call it, a method which pretends to a conquer ing destiny and whatever one may think of that philosophy of life which exhibits itself in a temperament of the most intensely practical and matter-of-fact type, it is certain that pragmatism is the only philosophy a science teacher can entertain and escape what to him is the most dangerous form of idolatry, science for its own sake. We wish to place on record our contempt for the poundal as an actual practical unit of force, and also for the slug pounds) as an actual practical unit of mass. Engineers will per haps always measure breaking strengths and the like in pounds weight, and hungry people will perhaps always buy bread and meat by the pound. But most certainly we do need the word pounded or the word slug so as to enable systematic units and practical units to be connected in intelligible argument. We pre fer the word pounded for this purpose. There is no doubt in our minds that practical units should be accepted in their entirety, pounds of cargo and pounds-weight of propelling force, and we consider that to attempt to simplify the equations of dynamics by the introduction of an unfamiliar and unused unit of force or mass is ridiculous. In this volume an experimental proof alone is given of the Parallelogram of Forces; other proofs of this important proposition will be found at the end of Part II. The Book is constructed on somewhat the same lines as the Author's "Elementary Treatise on Plane Trigonometry," which has now reached a Third Edition. The Book will be found rich in Exercises - a feature which the Author hopes will recommend it to Practical Teachers. The unit of time is the Second The unit of distance is the Foot or Meter, according as we follow the British or the metric system. We shall give both systems, as it can be done without confusion, and both are in use in the application of mechanical principles. Thus the civil engineer uses the British system of the foot and its sub divisions, the physicist the metric system, and the electrical engineer both systems. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Mechanics A few years' experience, both as Student and as Tutor, has led me to a grateful appreciation of the method of teach ing which is at present pursued by our University; one of the highest aims of which is to promote habits of rapid and accurate thought, and in this it is eminently successful. But the nature of the training adopted for this purpose has proved injurious to the style of our Mathematical Literature, more especially in the department of Natural Philosophy. Our educational books of Natural Science, in seeking to fulfil the requirements of the senate-house, have become mere collections of definite propositions; generally containing, it is true, all the known facts and the mathematical deductions dependent upon them which appertain to the respective subjects, but seldom offering the smallest relief to the barren ness which is incidental to such compositions: in this shape they have lost all the fulness and freshness of life; all popular illustration, all freedom of expression has been denied them; they have been deprived, in fact, of nearly all the charms that usually render the pursuit of science fascinating to the young. The portions selected have, however, been completely rearranged and rewritten in fuller detail with much additional illustration, and the whole con sequently forms a virtually new book, which, being smaller in compass and more elementary in Character, may, it is hoped, serve as an introduction to the larger work, and meet the wants of junior students.
