This book was released on 1994 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research of the Office of Naval Research grant at UCSB focused on the research concerns of mechanical properties of fiber reinforced metal matrix composites as well as the understanding of microstructural development in polycrystalline Al2O3 fibers synthesized from liquid precursors. It has been closely coordinated with the DARPA/ONR URI program dealing with the design of high performance composites.

Book Aluminum Matrix Composites Reinforced with Alumina Nanoparticles

Download or read book Aluminum Matrix Composites Reinforced with Alumina Nanoparticles written by Riccardo Casati and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-24 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the latest efforts to develop aluminum nanocomposites with enhanced damping and mechanical properties and good workability. The nanocomposites exhibited high strength, improved damping behavior and good ductility, making them suitable for use as wires. Since the production of metal matrix nanocomposites by conventional melting processes is considered extremely problematic (because of the poor wettability of the nanoparticles), different powder metallurgy routes were investigated, including high-energy ball milling and unconventional compaction methods. Special attention was paid to the structural characterization at the micro- and nanoscale, as uniform nanoparticle dispersion in metal matrix is of prime importance. The aluminum nanocomposites displayed an ultrafine microstructure reinforced with alumina nanoparticles produced in situ or added ex situ. The physical, mechanical and functional characteristics of the materials produced were evaluated using different mechanical tests and microstructure investigation techniques. The book presents and discusses the experimental results in detail, and offers suggestions for future research directions.

Book Development of fiber reinforced all oxide composites manufactured by a novel lamination route

Download or read book Development of fiber reinforced all oxide composites manufactured by a novel lamination route written by Paula de Oliveira Guglielmi and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2016-02-16 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work aims at investigating the viability of using reaction bonded aluminum oxide (RBAO) to produce fiber-reinforced all-oxide composites with a reduced amount of shrinkage-related cracks. A novel manufacturing route is therefore developed, in which thermoplastic prepregs are manufactured by a two-step impregnation process using organic-based suspensions. Composites with both RBAO and a reference all-oxide matrix are produced and characterized. A detailed analysis of the microstructure and mechanical properties of the produced composites allows for a critical evaluation of the developed processing route, as well as of the use of a RBAO matrix in all-oxide composites.

The Fiber FP/Aluminum was examined as a possible material alternative for track component application.

Book In Situ Liquid Crystal Polymer Fiber Reinforced Aluminum Matrix Composite

Download or read book In Situ Liquid Crystal Polymer Fiber Reinforced Aluminum Matrix Composite written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: POLYMETS are a new class of hybrid materials composed of metals and polymers. The microstructure and mechanical properties of POLYMETS can be customized to meet a wide variety of design requirements. In this research, five to twenty volume percent of a thermotropic, wholly aromatic, liquid crystal polymer was mixed with -240/+325 mesh commercially pure aluminum powder and hot extruded at 300 C. The tensile properties of these POLYMETS were evaluated and the results compared to a pure aluminum control specimen. Optical and electron microscopy were used to examine the microstructures of the extruded rods and fracture surfaces of the tensile specimens. It was observed that polymer fibrils aligned in the extrusion direction.

Book Microstructure Property Relationships for Carbon Fiber Reinforced Aluminum Alloys

Download or read book Microstructure Property Relationships for Carbon Fiber Reinforced Aluminum Alloys written by Robert Gordon Dixon and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graphite fibers with various coatings were tested for strength. Longitudinal composites were produced from the coated fibers using pure aluminum as the matrix by pressure casting. The strength and microstructure of the composites was evaluated. Longitudinal and transverse composites were also produced using uncoated graphite fibers with various alloy matrices and their strength and microstructure evaluated. The coated fibers were leached from the pure aluminum matrix and examined. The uncoated graphite fibers were leached from the alloy matrices and tested for strength. The coated fibers were not found to be stronger than the uncoated fibers, nor were they effective in increasing composite strengths. Composites produced from uncoated fibers and alloy matrices were quite strong longitudinally with strengths of up to 93 percent of rule of mixtures strength. The same material, when tested in the transverse direction exhibited low strengths, with the failure being interfacial. (Author).
