Book excerpt: An adequate physical and mathematical description of material be havior is basic to all engineering applications. Fortunately, many prob lems may be treated entirely within the framework of elastic material response. While even these problems may become yuite complex be cause of geometrical and loading conditions, the linearity, reversibility, and rate independence generally applicable to elastic material descrip tion certainly eases the task of the analyst. Today, however, we are in creasingly confronted with practical problems which involve material response which is inelastic, hysteretic and rate dependent combined with loading which is transient in nature. These problems include, for instance, structural response to moving or impulsive loads, all the areas of ballistics (internal, external and terminal), contact stresses under high speed bearings, high speed machining, rolling and other metal working processes, explosive and impact forming, shock attenuation structures, seismic wave propagation, and many others of equal im portance. As these problems were encountered, it became increasingly evident that we did not have at hand the physical or mathematical description of the behavior of materials necessary to produce realistic solutions. Thus, during the last ten years particularly, there has been considerable effort expended toward the generation of both experi mental data on the dynamic mechanical response of materials as well as the formulation of realistic constitutive theories. It was the purpose of the Symposium at which the articles in this book were presented to discuss and review recent developments in this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the mechanical and physical behavior of composites as influenced by composite geometry. This monograph provides a comprehensive introduction for researchers and students to modern composite materials research with a special emphasis on the influence of geometry to materials properties. Composite Materials enables the reader to a better understanding of the behavior of natural composites, improvement of such materials, and design of new materials with prescribed properties. A number of examples are considered in the book: Special composite properties considered are stiffness, shrinkage, hygro-thermal behavior, viscoelastic behavior, and internal stress states. Other physical properties considered are thermal and electrical conductivities, diffusion coefficients, dielectric constants and magnetic permeability. Special attention is given to the effect of pore shape on the mechanical and physical behavior of porous materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Temperature Structures and Materials is a compilation of the proceedings of the Third Symposium on Naval Structural Mechanics held at Columbia University in New York on January 23-25, 1963. The symposium provided a forum for discussing structural mechanics under conditions of elevated temperatures. Emphasis is placed on the various aspects of structural design for elevated temperature service. The following areas are covered: material aspects of elevated temperature design; effects of high-speed environment; thermal stress analysis; and design criteria and reliability. This book is comprised of 13 chapters and begins by assessing the temperature dependence of elastic and anelastic properties in solids, followed by a discussion on the thermo-mechanical behavior of ceramics. Subsequent chapters explore the physical aspects of creep; thermal fatigue and its relation to creep rupture and mechanical fatigue; materials aspects of the re-entry problem; and problems of heat conduction and melting. Thermal stresses in viscoelastic solids are also considered, along with creep design and aspects of reliability under conditions of elevated temperature creep and fatigue. This monograph will be a valuable resource for material physicists and mechanical and structural designers concerned with the problem of elevated temperature effects on the performance and safety of modern structures.
