Book Mechademia 9

Book excerpt: If the source of manga and anime is physically located in Japan, the temptation for many critics and scholars is to ask what aspects of Japanese culture and history gave rise to these media. This ninth volume of Mechademia—an annual collection of critical work on anime and manga—challenges the tendency to answer the question of origins by reductively generalizing and essentializing “Japaneseness.” The essays brought together in Mechademia 9 lead us to understand the extent to which “Japan” might be seen as an idea generated by anime, manga, and other texts rather than the other way around. What is it that manga and anime produce that no other medium can precisely duplicate? Is anime its own medium or a genre of animation—or something in between? And how must we adapt existing critical modes in order to read these new kinds of texts? While the authors begin with similar questions about the roots of Japanese popular culture and media, they invoke a wide range of theoretical work in the search for answers, including feminist criticism, disability studies, poststructuralist textual criticism, postcolonialism, art history, film theory, phenomenology, and more. Richly provocative and insightful, Mechademia 9 both enacts and resists the pursuit of fixed starting points, inspiring further creative investigation of this global artistic phenomenon. Book Stumbling Colossus

Download or read book Stumbling Colossus written by David M. Glantz and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on evidence never before seen in the West, including combat records of early engagements, David Glantz claims that in 1941 the Red Army was poorly trained, inadequately equipped, ineptly organized, and consequently incapable of engaging in large-scale military campaigns - and both Hitler and Stalin knew it. He provides a complete and convincing study of why the Soviets almost lost the war that summer, dispelling many of the myths about the Red Army that have persisted since the war and soundly refuting Viktor Suvorov's controversial thesis that Stalin was planning a preemptive strike against Germany.

Book excerpt: One flower and one world, the universe is also dust; there is no connection between the real and the false; one thought is eternal, one thought is eternal; the Dao is the Dao, the heavens are like the heavens, I have no heaven; the heavens and the heavens are like the heavens, I have no heaven, I am also the Dao. Truth and falsehood, presence or absence, truth or falsehood, these were just telepathic thoughts transformations! With a single thought, he gave birth to a world with the universe in his heart; the Mystery Granny Sect opened its doors wide to welcome him into the mortal world; he stepped through the myriad universe and lived his life in billions of worlds; life and death was the path, life and death was the way, the pots and pans were as big as the sky; the fusion of purple qi required two parts, the heaven and earth for three members, and the four phenomena were sometimes even more so, the completion of the five elements! This story is purely fictitious, the plot is not duplicated, if there is the same story, it is pure coincidence; the names of the characters are all in the same voice, such as Mo Gao (Ghost Catcher), etc., if there is a pure coincidence of the same name!
