Book excerpt: In this study we estimate and compare the realized range volatility, a novel efficient volatility estimator computed by summing high-low ranges for intra-day intervals, to the recently popularized realized variance estimator obtained by summing squared intra-day returns. Our results derived from a Greek equity high-frequency data set show that realized range-based measures improve upon the corresponding realized variance-based ones in most cases, especially for the most actively traded stocks. The usefulness of high-frequency data in measuring and forecasting financial volatility is apparent throughout the paper.

Book excerpt: In this paper, we estimate, model and forecast Realized Range Volatility, a realized measure and estimator of the quadratic variation of financial prices. This quantity was early introduced in the literature and it is based on the high-low range observed at high frequency during the day. We consider the impact of the microstructure noise in high frequency data and correct our estimations, following a known procedure. Then, we model the Realized Range accounting for the well-known stylized effects present in financial data and we investigate the role that macroeconomic and financial variables play when forecasting daily stocks volatility. We consider an HAR model with asymmetric effects with respect to the volatility and the return, and GARCH and GJR specifications for the variance equation. Moreover, we consider a non Gaussian distribution for the innovations. Finally, we extend the model including macroeconomic and financial variables that capture present and the future state of the economy. We find that these variables are significantly correlated with the first common component of the volatility series and they have a highly in-sample explanatory power. The analysis of the forecast performance in 16 NYSE stocks suggests that the introduction of asymmetric effects with respect to the returns and the volatility in the HAR model result in significant improvement in the point forecasting accuracy as well and the variables related with the U.S stock market performance and proxies for the credit risk.

Book excerpt: We introduce a heuristic bias-adjustment for the transaction price-based realized range estimator of daily volatility in the presence of bid-ask bounce and non-trading. The adjustment is an extension of the estimator proposed in Christensen et al. (2009). We relax the assumption that all intra-day high (low) transaction prices are at the ask (bid) quote. Using data-based simulations we obtain estimates of the probability that a given intraday range is (upward or downward) biased or not, which we use for a more refined bias-adjustment of the realized range estimator. Both Monte Carlo simulations and an empirical application involving a liquid and a relatively illiquid S&P500 constituent demonstrate that ex post measures and ex ante forecasts based on the heuristically adjusted realized range compare favorably to existing bias-adjusted (two time scales) realized range and (two time scales) realized variance estimators.

Except for extreme market conditions, market price may be more or less than a “fair” value. Fair value is likely to be some complicated function of the current intrinsic value of tangible or intangible assets underlying the claim and our assessment of the characteristics of the underlying assets with respect to the expected rate of growth, future dividends, volatility, and other relevant market factors. Some of these factors that affect the price can be measured at the time of a transaction with reasonably high accuracy. Most factors, however, relate to expectations about the future and to subjective issues, such as current management, corporate policies and market environment, that could affect the future financial performance of the underlying assets. Models are thus needed to describe the stochastic factors and environment, and their implementations inevitably require computational finance tools.

Risk management, asset pricing and option valuation techniques are the areas where the concept of volatility estimators (consistent, unbiased and the most efficient) is of crucial concern. Our intention was to find the best estimator of true volatility taking into account the latest investigations in finance literature. Basing on the methodology presented in previous papers on volatility estimators, we computed the various model-free volatility estimators and compared them with classical volatility estimator. In order to reveal the information set hidden in high-frequency data, we utilized the concept of realized volatility and realized range. Calculating our estimator, we carefully focused on (the interval used in calculation), n (the memory of the process) and q (scaling factor). Book excerpt: The study provides evidence in favour of the price range as a proxy estimator of volatility in financial time series, in the cases that either intra-day datasets are unavailable or they are available at a low sampling frequency.A stochastic differential equation with time varying volatility of the instantaneous logreturns process is simulated, in order to mimic the continuous time diffusion analogue of the discrete time volatility process. The simulations provide evidence that the price range measures are superior to the realized volatility constructed at low sampling frequency. The high-low price range volatility estimator is more accurate than the realized volatility estimator based on five, or less, equidistance points in time. The open-high-low-close price range is more accurate than the realized volatility estimator based on eight, or less, intraperiod log-returns.
