Book Life in Transition

Download or read book Life in Transition written by European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Since its inception in 1991 in the wake of the collapse of communism in eastern Europe, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has been committed to developing open and sustainable market economies. The Bank has been heavily involved in areas such as banking-sector reform, price liberalisation, privatisation of state-owned companies and the creation of proper legal frameworks--all of which are vital ingredients for structural change. To continue its work in furthering progress towards 'market-oriented economies and the promotion of private and entrepreneurial initiative', the Bank needs to understand how transition is affecting the daily lives of people in the region and how it shapes their views on issues such as democracy and the market economy, as well as their satisfaction with life and their hopes for the future. In order to answer some of these questions, the EBRD has carried out a major survey of households and individuals across the region--the Life in Transition Survey. This publication summarises the main results of the most recent round of the survey, conducted in 2016, and compares it with the previous rounds conducted in 2006 and 2010, in order to share these results with our partners in the region and beyond."--Page 01.

Book Measuring Democracy

Download or read book Measuring Democracy written by Gerardo L. Munck and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2009-04-15 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although democracy is a widely held value, concrete measurement of it is elusive. Gerardo L. Munck’s constructive assessment of the methods used to measure democracies promises to bring order to the debate in academia and in practice. Drawing on his years of academic research on democracy and measurement and his practical experience evaluating democratic practices for the United Nations and the Organization of American States, Munck's discussion bridges the theories of academia with practical applications. In proposing a more open and collaborative relationship between theory and action, he makes the case for reassessing how democracy is measured and encourages fundamental changes in methodology. Munck’s field-tested framework for quantifying and qualifying democracy is built around two instruments he developed: the UN Development Programme’s Electoral Democracy Index and a case-by-case election monitoring tool used by the OAS. Measuring Democracy offers specific, real-world lessons that scholars and practitioners can use to improve the quality and utility of data about democracy.

Book Transitioning Care from Pediatric to Adult Pulmonology

Download or read book Transitioning Care from Pediatric to Adult Pulmonology written by Cynthia D. Brown and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-28 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses an unmet need in the care of adolescents and young adults with lung disease. The increasing survival of young adults with childhood-onset pulmonary conditions is a testament to major advances in treatments and health care delivery. With the increase in survival of children with chronic respiratory conditions, there is a need for formalized transition programs to integrate adolescents and young adults into the adult model of care. This book helps fill gaps in knowledge to best achieve that initiative. This book takes a comprehensive approach to transition care in pulmonary medicine by satisfying the following objectives: 1) Understand the barriers and developmental challenges in the transition from pediatric to adult care for patients with chronic childhood-onset pulmonary disease; 2) Learn about successful evidence based transition models in pulmonary disease populations, focusing on key process and outcome measures for success; and 3) Develop knowledge to design, implement, and measure a transition program based on evidence and expert opinion. In the first section, the book outlines general principles of transition care that are applicable to all patients regardless of underlying disease process and describe best practices for performing necessary research in transition care. In the second section, the book explores psychosocial factors known to play a role in affecting transition outcomes, including parental support, psychological development, and socioeconomic factors. In the final section, transition outcomes and best practices in specific respiratory diseases are outlined. With a focus on populations with chronic pulmonary disease, this book highlights the challenges and barriers of transition, reviews model systems to understand the essential components of a transition program, and provides evidence-based information to navigate these barriers and achieve successful outcomes during transition to adulthood. This is an ideal guide for pediatric and adult pulmonary providers caring for patients who are transition age, as well as multidisciplinary care team members who work with these providers in care models on transition projects to improve the transition process.

Book Measuring Transition and Mobility in the Hierarchical World Economy

Download or read book Measuring Transition and Mobility in the Hierarchical World Economy written by Raymond J. Dezzani and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides a temporal stochastic framework that is used to analyze economic transitions of countries in the world-system. As such, it provides a contribution to a general quantitative rendering of the world-systems perspective. State space modeling using Markov chains provides a powerful stochastic instrument for global economic modeling when structure is known but relational uncertainty is present as well as for examining temporal change of geographic phenomena. Two phenomena are examined: (1) country mobility among regional classes within the world-economy; and (2) the stability of the rate of country-level transitions. Results suggest that although a moderate amount of movement has taken place in the period 1960-1990, the overall structure of the world-economy has not changed significantly. Thus, although the developmental hypothesis that countries are upwardly mobile has merit, empirical results suggest that very little impact is observed in the world-system because countries moving upward in the world-economy region sequence are nearly balanced by countries moving down the sequence.
