Book excerpt: Wood is formed in an essentially water-saturated environment in the living tree, and the cell wall remains in this state until the water flow from the roots is interrupted, such as by felling the tree. The wood then begins to lose most of its moisture by drying, resulting in changes in most of its physical properties. These changes, and their relationship to the environment to which the wood is subsequently ex posed, are the subject of this book. The text consists of six chapters. The first chapter discusses cer tain empirical relationships between wood and water, methods of measuring wood moisture content, factors which affect its equilib rium moisture content, and the effect of moisture content on wood strength. The second chapter treats the thermodynamics of moisture sorption by wood, inc1uding enthalpy, entropy, and free energy changes. The third chapter discusses some of the theories which have been proposed to explain the sorption isotherms for hygroscopic ma terials such as wood. Chapter 4 considers hygroexpansion or the shrinking and swelling of wood associated with moisture change. Chapter 5 is concerned with how moisture moves through the cell wall of wood in response to both moisture and temperature gradients. The sixth and final chapter discusses the theoretical and practical aspects of the electrical resistance and dielectric properties of wood, in c1uding the principles involved in their application in electrical moisture meters.

Book excerpt: The attenuation, phase shift and depolarization of a polarized 4.81-gigahertz wave as it is transmitted through a wood specimen can provide estimates of the moisture content (MC), density, and grain angle of the specimen. Calibrations are empirical, and computations are complicated, with considerable interaction between parameters. Measured dielectric parameters, however, correlate uniquely and repeatably with MC over a range of MC at least as great as 100 percent of the dry weight of the wood. Grain angle can be deduced reliably when the specimen thickness and MC are great enough to introduce sufficient dielectric anisotropy to appreciably depolarize the incident wave. At present, the apparatus and techniques are very complex, but the principles developed by this research show the method to be feasible for nondestructive testing of lumber as it is produced.

Book excerpt: Wood is a major structural material used in the construction of residential and commercial buildings. In situ and continuous measurement of moisture in a wood element of the building envelope is critical in preventing the occurrence of moisture related damages to the building structure, and also helps in determining the thermal and energy performance of the system. Moisture content of a wood assembly may serve as an indicator of the effectiveness and potential condensation-related damage to the adjoining thermal insulation layers in the building envelope. Typically, the moisture content in a wood component is determined by measuring the electrical resistance across a pair of metallic pin sensors, with correlation or calibration between resistance and moisture content already established for the studied wood species. As the wood dries from fiber saturation point (FSP) to equilibrium moisture content (EMC), the resistance typically increases by 4 orders of magnitude from hundreds of k? to G?. Typical resistance measurement instrumentation schemes such as voltage divider and multimeters are often incapable to cover this wide dynamic range of resistance. To further complicate the measurements, low EMC values of 5 %-10 % range correspond to very high resistances in the range of M?-G?, a regime that has remained challenging to measure because of lower current and leakage issues. To circumvent these issues, we developed an instrumentation methodology based on a simple voltage divider circuit in combination with a data-logger with reference resistors selected in such a manner to maximize the dynamic range of the measurement with sufficient accuracy and resolution for higher resistance range. The results showed significant improvements in the dynamic range and resolution for the MC measurements.
