Book Measuring the Impacts of Large scale Swine Operations on Quality of Life in Rural Communities

Download or read book Measuring the Impacts of Large scale Swine Operations on Quality of Life in Rural Communities written by Anna M. Kleiner and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dramatic increase in the development of large factory-style swine production facilities in rural America has occurred in recent decades in association with transnational corporations (TNCs) sourcing the planet for profitable production locations. The development of industrial swine facilities is one of the most critical and contentious issues at the intersections of agriculture, environment, and community. The siting of these facilities has resulted in social conflict among and between family members, friends, neighbors, populist organizations, policymakers, and industry leaders. Debate continues over the social, economic, and environmental impacts associated with these facilities. This study focuses on the hypothesis that the unit of analysis is vital in understanding the effects of the industrialization of agriculture on individual and community well-being. Analyzing data at a unit of analysis smaller than the county-level can reveal a diversity of impacts not captured by larger aggregate units of analysis. Based on the Goldschmidt literature, this research relies on historical document analysis, unstructured interviews, and secondary data to describe the industrialization of agriculture, economic trends in four study counties, and public perceptions toward intensive hog production as a strategy for economic development. Quantitative analysis of survey data is used to measure the association between proximity to hog facilities and perceptions of quality of life of residents across three Missouri counties, with a fourth county used as the control county. Results suggest that in counties where these facilities are concentrated, experiencing the effects of large-scale industrial swine facilities within close proximity has deleterious effects on the personal quality of life of residents, such as their behavior at home. At the same time, these facilities generate public and private revenue valued by residents county-wide and continue to be supported in counties enjoying their economic benefits. Residents who reside in rural counties lacking these facilities generally do not support them based more on the perception that they may economically threaten their rural livelihood and agricultural interests.

Book The Sociology of Food and Agriculture

Download or read book The Sociology of Food and Agriculture written by Michael Carolan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-12 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this second edition of The Sociology of Food and Agriculture, students are provided with a substantially revised and updated introductory text to this emergent field. The book begins with the recent development of agriculture under capitalism and neo-liberal regimes, and the transformation of farming and peasant agriculture from a small-scale, family-run way of life to a globalized system. Topics such as the global hunger and obesity challenges, GM foods, and international trade and subsidies are assessed as part of the world food economy. The final section concentrates on themes of sustainability, food security, and food sovereignty. The book concludes on a positive note, examining alternative agri-food movements aimed at changing foodscapes at levels from the local to the global. With increased coverage of the financialization of food, food and culture, gender, ethnicity and justice, food security, and food sovereignty, the book is perfect for students with little or no background in sociology and is also suitable for more advanced courses as a comprehensive primer. All chapters include learning objectives, suggested discussion questions, and recommendations for further reading to aid student learning.

Book The Science of Environmental Pollution

Download or read book The Science of Environmental Pollution written by Frank R. Spellman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-06-17 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of The Science of Environmental Pollution presents common-sense approaches and practical examples based on scientific principles, models, and observations, but keeps the text lively and understandable for scientists and non-scientists alike. It addresses the important questions regarding environmental pollution: What is it? What is its impact? What are the causes and how can we mitigate them? But more than this, it stimulates new ways to think about the issues and their possible solutions. This fourth edition has been updated throughout, and greatly expands its coverage of endocrine disruptors and includes all new information on persistent "forever chemicals." Environmental issues continue to attract attention at all levels. Some sources say that pollution is the direct cause of climate change; others deny that the possibility even exists. This text sorts through the hyperbole, providing concepts and guidelines that not only aid in understanding the issues, but equip readers with the scientific rationale required to make informed decisions. Features: Updated throughout, and contains a new chapter on the effects of endocrine disruptors in the environment. Provides an introduction to air, soil, and water pollution sources and remediation. Addresses pressing issues such as global climate change, rising sea levels, polluted air, increased weather phenomena, and the state of potable water worldwide. Supplies a vital information source for policy-makers involved in decisions concerning environmental management. Includes case studies, examples, and study questions. The Science of Environmental Pollution is suitable for students taking undergraduate-level courses dealing with the environment and related pollution issues. It will also serve as a useful reference for environmental managers, politicians, legal experts, and interested general readers.

Book Environmental performance of pig supply chains Guidelines for assessment Version 1

Download or read book Environmental performance of pig supply chains Guidelines for assessment Version 1 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a living document produced by the Livestock Environmental and Assessment Performance (LEAP) Partnership. The document presents a methodology and provides guidance for the assessment of the environmental performance of pig supply chains. It provides users guidance on how to apply the life cycle assessment approach to pig supply chains. Demand for livestock products is projected to grow 1.3 percent per year until 2050, driven by global population growth and increasing wealth and urbanization. This projected growth places significant pressure on the livestock sector to perform in a more sustainable way. Currently, many different methods are used to assess the environmental impacts and performance of livestock products. This causes confusion and makes it difficult to compare results and set priorities for continuing improvement. The intention of this document is to provide an overview assessment of existing studies and associated methods that have used life cycle assessment for the evaluation of pig supply chains.

Book Air Emissions from Animal Feeding Operations

Download or read book Air Emissions from Animal Feeding Operations written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-04-07 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air Emissions from Animal Feeding Operations: Current Knowledge, Future Needs discusses the need for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to implement a new method for estimating the amount of ammonia, nitrous oxide, methane, and other pollutants emitted from livestock and poultry farms, and for determining how these emissions are dispersed in the atmosphere. The committee calls for the EPA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to establish a joint council to coordinate and oversee short - and long-term research to estimate emissions from animal feeding operations accurately and to develop mitigation strategies. Their recommendation was for the joint council to focus its efforts first on those pollutants that pose the greatest risk to the environment and public health.
