Book Women s Cooperatives in Lebanon

Download or read book Women s Cooperatives in Lebanon written by Rosy Chawki Tayar and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My research project mainly aims to explore and discuss two related ideas: the economic impact of international organizations initiatives on improving the living conditions of womens cooperatives in south Lebanon; and ability of the womens cooperatives members to sustain those initiatives over a long period of time. Measuring the economic impact of the initiatives provided by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) manifests the international perspective of the research project. As a UNDP staff member, I had access to resources, studies and information that allowed me to deal with this subject. The methodology I used is qualitative: I sampled ten womens cooperatives in South Lebanon and carried out thirty one-to-one interviews, with three members from each of the ten sampled cooperatives. I used visual tools like tables, charts and figures to present information and analyze results. Of the many findings I have reached, only two were directly related to the subject of this study. Firstly, UNDP through providing in-kind contributions to womens cooperatives in south Lebanon did not improve the living conditions of those womens coop members; secondly, beneficiaries (womens cooperatives members) are able to sustain UNDP in-kind contributions in the long run. Providing in-kind contributions like machinery or equipment is highly important but such support is most effective if other conditions are also met, like the presence of permanent markets, proper marketing and resource mobilization plans, proper packaging and labeling techniques, capacity building programs and adequate access to loans.

Book Harnessing a Currency Matrix for Performance Measurement in Cooperatives

Download or read book Harnessing a Currency Matrix for Performance Measurement in Cooperatives written by Theo Benos and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cooperative organizational form is by nature a sustainable one, which has proved to be resilient in the face of crises and a solid lever in addressing present-day societal challenges. Still, little is known about its socio-economic impact. Also, despite the plethora of studies on cooperative performance, research remains inconclusive about how to best measure it. In fact, scholarly work has largely favored the use of appraisal tools reflecting those of investor-owned firms (IOFs), having undermined the dual idiosyncratic nature of the cooperative organizational form, which is manifest in the business and social-membership objectives. The goal of this article is to fill these gaps by delivering a comprehensive dashboard for cooperative performance assessment that harmonizes business-social aspects and catalogs the basic components for future attempts. To reach this goal, we used an extensive review of empirical research in cooperative performance (phase 1) and a Delphi study with 14 experts (phase 2). In addition, we reviewed comparable research efforts for a business form (social enterprises) that combines business with social goals and faces similar challenges (phase 3). This inquiry was particularly insightful for the social perspective and the overlooked role of cooperatives as a socially-embedded organizational form that hardly documents its societal impact and outreach.

Book Cooperatives and Local Development

Download or read book Cooperatives and Local Development written by Christopher D. Merrett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2004. The market economy has changed profoundly over the past two centuries. In the nineteenth century, business enterprises were largely single-product ventures, managed directly by the owners and rooted within national economies. In the twentieth century, firms employed managers who were not owners. Firms also evolved into multiproduct, multiunit entities that could employ thousands of workers. In the twenty-first century, many firms operate on a global scale, taking advantage of free trade policies and rapidly evolving computer and telecommunications technologies. Given this potential, it is crucial that producers, consumers, economic developers, and researchers realize how co-ops can promote local economic and community development. Hence, this book includes the perceptions of experts on a variety of cooperative issues, including the challenges involved in starting a co-op and in understanding its impact on surrounding communities. This book can be especially useful because it provides the theoretical foundations and practical applications of cooperative behavior.

Book Socio Economic Impact of Agricultural Cooperative Organizations

Download or read book Socio Economic Impact of Agricultural Cooperative Organizations written by Ademola Ladele and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural cooperatives are seen as a veritable tool for improving farm production and rural better livelihood. Cooperative studies in Nigeria, like many other developing nations have concentrated on economic variables despite the belief globally that the social aspects of cooperation are equally important. This book presents an empirical study that investigated the capability of the farmers' co-operative societies in transforming the rural economy through improved livelihood. This can be realistic if members' well being is better than non-members'. The study has shown that co-operators and non-co-operators were not different in many of their personal characteristics; the co-operators were however better in the economic status, adoption level, family health status, social-economic status and social participation. The study then established that participation in farmers' co-operatives contributes to some dimensions of members' socio-economic well-being. If active participation is encouraged and co-operatives become more broad-based in activities, it could indeed be a virile tool in transforming the rural economy.

Book Building the New Economy

Download or read book Building the New Economy written by Alex Pentland and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to empower people and communities with user-centric data ownership, transparent and accountable algorithms, and secure digital transaction systems. Data is now central to the economy, government, and health systems—so why are data and the AI systems that interpret the data in the hands of so few people? Building the New Economy calls for us to reinvent the ways that data and artificial intelligence are used in civic and government systems. Arguing that we need to think about data as a new type of capital, the authors show that the use of data trusts and distributed ledgers can empower people and communities with user-centric data ownership, transparent and accountable algorithms, machine learning fairness principles and methodologies, and secure digital transaction systems. It’s well known that social media generate disinformation and that mobile phone tracking apps threaten privacy. But these same technologies may also enable the creation of more agile systems in which power and decision-making are distributed among stakeholders rather than concentrated in a few hands. Offering both big ideas and detailed blueprints, the authors describe such key building blocks as data cooperatives, tokenized funding mechanisms, and tradecoin architecture. They also discuss technical issues, including how to build an ecosystem of trusted data, the implementation of digital currencies, and interoperability, and consider the evolution of computational law systems.
