Book excerpt: My research project mainly aims to explore and discuss two related ideas: the economic impact of international organizations initiatives on improving the living conditions of womens cooperatives in south Lebanon; and ability of the womens cooperatives members to sustain those initiatives over a long period of time. Measuring the economic impact of the initiatives provided by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) manifests the international perspective of the research project. As a UNDP staff member, I had access to resources, studies and information that allowed me to deal with this subject. The methodology I used is qualitative: I sampled ten womens cooperatives in South Lebanon and carried out thirty one-to-one interviews, with three members from each of the ten sampled cooperatives. I used visual tools like tables, charts and figures to present information and analyze results. Of the many findings I have reached, only two were directly related to the subject of this study. Firstly, UNDP through providing in-kind contributions to womens cooperatives in south Lebanon did not improve the living conditions of those womens coop members; secondly, beneficiaries (womens cooperatives members) are able to sustain UNDP in-kind contributions in the long run. Providing in-kind contributions like machinery or equipment is highly important but such support is most effective if other conditions are also met, like the presence of permanent markets, proper marketing and resource mobilization plans, proper packaging and labeling techniques, capacity building programs and adequate access to loans.

Book excerpt: The cooperative organizational form is by nature a sustainable one, which has proved to be resilient in the face of crises and a solid lever in addressing present-day societal challenges. Still, little is known about its socio-economic impact. Also, despite the plethora of studies on cooperative performance, research remains inconclusive about how to best measure it. In fact, scholarly work has largely favored the use of appraisal tools reflecting those of investor-owned firms (IOFs), having undermined the dual idiosyncratic nature of the cooperative organizational form, which is manifest in the business and social-membership objectives. The goal of this article is to fill these gaps by delivering a comprehensive dashboard for cooperative performance assessment that harmonizes business-social aspects and catalogs the basic components for future attempts. To reach this goal, we used an extensive review of empirical research in cooperative performance (phase 1) and a Delphi study with 14 experts (phase 2). In addition, we reviewed comparable research efforts for a business form (social enterprises) that combines business with social goals and faces similar challenges (phase 3). This inquiry was particularly insightful for the social perspective and the overlooked role of cooperatives as a socially-embedded organizational form that hardly documents its societal impact and outreach.

Cooperative studies in Nigeria, like many other developing nations have concentrated on economic variables despite the belief globally that the social aspects of cooperation are equally important. This book presents an empirical study that investigated the capability of the farmers' co-operative societies in transforming the rural economy through improved livelihood. This can be realistic if members' well being is better than non-members'. The study has shown that co-operators and non-co-operators were not different in many of their personal characteristics; the co-operators were however better in the economic status, adoption level, family health status, social-economic status and social participation. The study then established that participation in farmers' co-operatives contributes to some dimensions of members' socio-economic well-being. If active participation is encouraged and co-operatives become more broad-based in activities, it could indeed be a virile tool in transforming the rural economy.
