Download or read book The Labor Market and Economic Adjustment written by Pierre-Richard Agénor and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1995-11-01 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the role of the labor market in the transmission process of adjustment policies in developing countries. It begins by reviewing the recent evidence regarding the functioning of these markets. It then studies the implications of wage inertia, nominal contracts, labor market segmentation, and impediments to labor mobility for stabilization policies. The effect of labor market reforms on economic flexibility and the channels through which labor market imperfections alter the effects of structural adjustment measures are discussed next. The last part of the paper identifies a variety of issues that may require further investigation, such as the link between changes in relative wages and the distributional effects of adjustment policies.

Book Handbook on Measuring Quality of Employment

Download or read book Handbook on Measuring Quality of Employment written by and published by . This book was released on 2016-01-31 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employment is a key driver of social and economic development. It is also at the centre of most people's lives and the quality of an individual's employment is an important element of his or her well-being. At the same time, labour markets are evolving and the conditions of employment are continuously changing, which affects the lives of workers and their households. This development has been accompanied by growing interest in quality of employment and demands from policymakers, governments and researchers for more systematic information on the quality of employment to complement the well-established quantitative labour market indicators. The Framework offers a coherent structure for measuring quality of employment and provides practical guidance for compiling and interpreting a number of proposed indicators.

Book Stratification in Israel

Download or read book Stratification in Israel written by Moshe Semyonov and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently, issues surrounding ethnic-linked inequality, whether between Jews and Arabs or between Jewish ethnic groups, have dominated research on stratification in Israel to the exclusion of other dimensions. Rapidly growing inequality in Israeli society, and its intergenerational persistence, however, have generated several new trends in research. The chapters included in this volume represent the range and depth of recent developments in the study of social stratification, mobility, and inequality. Although they address a variety of issues, they have in common a focus on the institutional mechanisms that govern the allocation of rewards.

Book Measuring Underemployment

Download or read book Measuring Underemployment written by Clifford C. Clogg and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measuring Underemployment: Demographic Indicators for the United States discusses the Labor Utilization Framework of Hauser and Sullivan, which is a measurement scheme that posits the existence of three dimensions, or forms, of underemployment— time, income, and skill-utilization. This book describes the conceptual groundwork, operational measurement, and implications of the Labor Utilization Framework on the way the labor force aggregates. The essential elements of the socio-demographic theory of the labor force with the logical unity provided by both the Labor Utilization Framework and the specific methodologies adopted for its analysis are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the methods for latent structure analysis and cohort analysis, including the theory of frictional underemployment; "class structure governing the distribution of labor market rewards; tempo of social change in the labor force; "productive value of a population; and "true dependency on productive labor. This publication is a good source for students and researchers concerned with different labor force topics that can be plausibly studied from the viewpoint of the Hauser-Sullivan framework.

Book Analyzing the Labor Force

Download or read book Analyzing the Labor Force written by Clifford C. Clogg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-12-31 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the passing of Clifford Collier Clogg at the age of 45 on May 7th 1995, the world lost a talented sociologist, demographer, and statistician all at once. In addition to being a considerable talent in each of these three disciplines, and perhaps more importantly, Cliff was the type of person who brought to gether diverse elements and scholars from all three. Cliff was also a consum mate mentor, nurturing ideas and students and always striving to bring out the best in both. Perhaps nothing illustrates the stature, impact, and respect others held for Cliff more than the fact that never before-and never since has an individual been honored at the time of his death with ceremonies from the national associations of all three of these disciplines. The purpose of this book is to introduce to a broad constituency of social scientists and their students some of the basic ideas in the study of the labor force that Cliff and his colleagues had grappled with. At the time of Cliff's death, he was perhaps better known for his methodological contributions to sociology and demography than he was for his substantive contributions to the study of social stratification and the labor force. Our goal is to highlight Cliff's substantive contributions to sociology and demography by telling the cumulative story of his research and adding updated analysis that advances the story beyond the early 1980s to the mid-1990s.
