It cannot be dealt with as just a physical problem but must be considered as a multi-dimensional one, affected by politics, economics and social influences. This book focuses on the specific example of food safety in the beef industry in the USA, Canada, the UK and Australia. It outlines the experience of a number of countries with food safety problems (such as BSE) and examines:drivers for change and institutional arrangements within the four countrieswhether there is a socially optimal approach to food safetyhow much consumers can rely on the industry to police itself and governments to look after their interestsIt also examines the implications for competitiveness and world trade.

Book International Beef Commerce

Download or read book International Beef Commerce written by Hernan Palau and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beef production worldwide grew, according to the FAO, by 30 million tons during 1965-2005. Its annual growth rate has been 2.2%, higher than the average growth rate of the world population (1.7%). The main increases in beef consumption in the past few years have taken place in Asian countries (China, India, Japan, Korea and the Philippines) and in Brazil and Mexico. This can be explained by a consumer diet change brought about by an increase of the population's purchasing power and migration to cities. Argentine beef has a good international position. However, Argentina's beef exports have been very erratic. The Argentine beef sector appears as a sector of low international competitiveness in systemic terms, although its production costs per animal are lower than those of other producing countries. Beef consumption worldwide is expected to continue rising. In that sense, Latin American countries would have a chance to provide to developing countries. Therefore, an opportunity arises for Argentina to become an important player in world beef exports, especially due to the potential of beef production it has, based on all its production possibilities (extensive, pasture-based; and intensive, or feedlot). In this paper we aim to study the future situation of the international beef market and analyze Argentina's possibilities to reposition itself as an important exporter, both in quantity and quality, in the medium term. Primary and secondary data is used, analyzing the main drivers and trends on international beef.

Book Agribusiness competitiveness Applying analytics typology and measurements to Africa

Download or read book Agribusiness competitiveness Applying analytics typology and measurements to Africa written by Shishodia, Mahika and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2017-07-02 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agribusiness has a major role to play in the transformation of the agricultural sector in Africa. With the demand for high-value food products increasing around the world, the production and export of these goods represents an opportunity to achieve increases in income and employment. To capture the benefits of this trend and capitalize on this opportunity for long-term agricultural growth, agribusiness in Africa must become more competitive. In addition to improving competitiveness, increasing agricultural productivity and food security are also major challenges in African agricultural development. In this paper, we compare the agribusiness competitiveness of African countries and develop typologies connected with their food security and agricultural productivity status. The typologies reveal various stylized facts on the competitiveness of agribusiness to help nations prioritize issues for agricultural development and growth. We develop the measures of agribusiness competitiveness and apply them to African countries. Additionally, we present policy implications and lessons for increasing the competitiveness of agribusiness in African countries.

Book Measuring the Distribution of Economic Benefits from Adopting Genomic Technology in the U S Beef Industry

Download or read book Measuring the Distribution of Economic Benefits from Adopting Genomic Technology in the U S Beef Industry written by Timur Ibragimov and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feed inputs comprise one of the largest operational cost categories for beef production. Thus, the economic sustainability of the beef industry can be positively impacted by improving feed efficiency. Genomic testing could be used to select beef animals with increased feed efficiency. As such this management tool offers the potential for economic improvement across the beef supply chain. A number of factors impacting feed efficiency have been investigated, but little research has been reported related to the economics associated with genomic testing and its potential to improve feed efficiency. Hence, our research objective is to evaluate the potential economic impact of improving feed efficiency in the beef sector using genomic testing to improve selection of efficient animals. We use existing data from cattle feeding experiments conducted at James C. Hageman Sustainable Agriculture Research and Extension Center (SAREC) to motivate our analyses. We conduct firm level budget analyses to estimate the potential economic improvement associated with increasing feed efficiency across both cow-calf and feedlot operations. These firm level analyses are then used in an Equilibrium Displacement Model (EDM) to estimate the overall potential economic gains associated with improved feed efficiency in the U.S. beef sector. Our results suggest that feedlots could receive the biggest share of benefits estimated at a $112 to $124 per head Net Present Value (NPV) improvement over 10 years. Cow-calf operations could potentially realize $36 to $99 per head NPV improvement over 10 years depending on size of operation and assumptions made. EDM results indicate the industry-wide sum of NPV of benefits for years 3 through 9 is nearly $12 billion.
