Book The Role of Trust in Leadership

Download or read book The Role of Trust in Leadership written by Jamiel Vadell and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trust continues to be a leading concept in organizational commitment. Milligan (2003) conducted a survey looking at trust in the Air Force among junior officers. This study was conducted as a follow-up study to determine whether trust continues to be an issue in the Air Force. The purpose of this study is to measure the comparative strengths and weaknesses, as well as the significance, of leadership s ability to gain trust from its subordinates in order to reduce the numbers of officers leaving after their commitment. This research measures organizational commitment and trust in a random sample of 372 Air Force captains. All participants completed the following surveys: The Management Behavior Climate Assessment, Organizational Commitment Scales, Intent to Leave Scale, and a demographics survey. Findings of the research concluded with the following points, as trust is a growing factor in leadership and junior officers leaving the Air Force, there is a relationship between trust and commitment. There is also a strong relationship between commitment and intent of junior officers leaving the Air Force. Finally, trust was the primary variable in this study and it was found that with an increase of trust in leadership, there is a decrease of junior officers leaving the Air Force.

Book Determining Effective Leadership Behaviors for USAF Company Grade Officers

Download or read book Determining Effective Leadership Behaviors for USAF Company Grade Officers written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leaders need to emphasize different behaviors as they advance through increasing levels of responsibility (Jacobs and Jaques, 1985). This same thesis can be applied to Air Force officers different behaviors are needed as an officer progresses from company grade to field grade to general officer (Yukl and Van Fleet, 1986). The purpose of this investigation is to determine the critical leadership behaviors required by junior officers at the direct level of responsibility in the USAF, and to determine differences in effective behaviors across major career tracks. A sample of 647 Squadron Officer School captains, who were between their fourth and seventh years of commissioned service, were administered Yukl's Managerial Practices Survey (MPS). The modified MPS asked each subject to rate the importance of 11 managerial behaviors in relation to their current job. The behaviors included informing, consulting and delegating, planning and organizing, problem solving, clarifying roles and objectives, monitoring operations, motivating, recognizing and rewarding, supporting and mentoring, managing conflict and team building, and networking. The three most important behaviors identified were informing (M=4.4), problem solving (M=4.2), and planning and organizing (M=4.1). Least important was networking (M=3.4). Significant differences were also found between operations and support personnel. With these behaviors identified, senior officers should be better able to mentor and develop junior officers, and professional military education can be tailored to focus on those critical behaviors for effective leadership.

Book Developing Your Full Range of Leadership

Download or read book Developing Your Full Range of Leadership written by Fil J. Arenas and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-07 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leadership is a daunting subject for most developing leaders, but eventually all followers will be called upon to lead. Where do we start? What model or theory do we utilize? The choices become overwhelming for anyone attempting online searches. Everywhere you look are leadership books, programs, degrees, workshops, seminars, boot camps, and even mobile apps! Many organizations at Air University are utilizing the full range of leadership approach. Initially introduced by James MacGregor Burns in 1978 and Bernard Bass in1985, these transformational and transactional leadership styles have sustained nearly four decades. Through (1) idealized transformational leader behaviors, one may raise the levels of his or her ethical and moral values while committing to "doing the right thing" for himself or herself and his or her followers: (2) by using inspirational motivation, leaders learn to articulate a vision to energize followers to accomplish more than they ever thought possible; (3) by intellectually stimulating followers, leaders will challenge followers to create and innovate as they reframe problems with renewed visions; and by providing individualized consideration, leaders may learn to incorporate each member's distinct gifts and talents as individual contributors to the organizational team. These transformational behaviors can offer connections to reaching (4) authentic transformational leadership by incorporating not only ethics and values but also, according to John Sosik, virtues and character strengths to refine one's leadership acumen, ameliorating leader-follower dynamics

Book Making the Soldier Decisive on Future Battlefields

Download or read book Making the Soldier Decisive on Future Battlefields written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-06-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. military does not believe its soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines should be engaged in combat with adversaries on a "level playing field." Our combat individuals enter engagements to win. To that end, the United States has used its technical prowess and industrial capability to develop decisive weapons that overmatch those of potential enemies. In its current engagement-what has been identified as an "era of persistent conflict"- the nation's most important weapon is the dismounted soldier operating in small units. Today's soldier must be prepared to contend with both regular and irregular adversaries. Results in Iraq and Afghanistan show that, while the U.S. soldier is a formidable fighter, the contemporary suite of equipment and support does not afford the same high degree of overmatch capability exhibited by large weapons platforms-yet it is the soldier who ultimately will play the decisive role in restoring stability. Making the Soldier Decisive on Future Battlefields establishes the technical requirements for overmatch capability for dismounted soldiers operating individually or in small units. It prescribes technological and organizational capabilities needed to make the dismounted soldier a decisive weapon in a changing, uncertain, and complex future environment and provides the Army with 15 recommendations on how to focus its efforts to enable the soldier and tactical small unit (TSU) to achieve overmatch.
