Book Measurements of the Top Quark Mass at the Tevatron

Download or read book Measurements of the Top Quark Mass at the Tevatron written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mass of the top quark (m{sub top}) is a fundamental parameter of the standard model (SM). Currently, its most precise measurements are performed by the CDF and D0 collaborations at the Fermilab Tevatron p{bar p} collider at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 1.96 TeV. We review the most recent of those measurements, performed on data samples of up to 8.7 fb−1 of integrated luminosity. The Tevatron combination using up to 5.8 fb−1 of data results in a preliminary world average top quark mass of m{sub top} = 173.2 ± 0.9 GeV. This corresponds to a relative precision of about 0.54%. We conclude with an outlook of anticipated precision the final measurement of m{sub top} at the Tevatron.

Book Top Quark Mass Measurement at the Tevatron

Download or read book Top Quark Mass Measurement at the Tevatron written by Joao Guimaraes da Costa and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors report on the latest experimental measurements of the top quark mass by the CDF and D0 Collaborations at the Fermilab Tevatron. They present a new top mass measurement using the t{bar t} events collected by the D0 Collaboration in Run I between 1994 and 1996. This result is combined with previous measurements to yield a new world top mass average. They also describe several preliminary results using up to 193 pb{sup -1} of t{bar t} events produced in {bar p}p collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV during the Run II of the Tevatron.

Book Measurement of the Top Quark Mass in the Dilepton Final State Using the Matrix Element Method

This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main pacemakers of scienti?c research are curiosity, ingenuity, and a pinch of persistence. Equipped with these characteristics a young researcher will be s- cessful in pushing scienti?c discoveries. And there is still a lot to discover and to understand. In the course of understanding the origin and structure of matter it is now known that all matter is made up of six types of quarks. Each of these carry a different mass. But neither are the particular mass values understood nor is it known why elementary particles carry mass at all. One could perhaps accept some small generic mass value for every quark, but nature has decided differently. Two quarks are extremely light, three more have a somewhat typical mass value, but one quark is extremely massive. It is the top quark, the heaviest quark and even the heaviest elementary particle that we know, carrying a mass as large as the mass of three iron nuclei. Even though there exists no explanation of why different particle types carry certain masses, the internal consistency of the currently best theory—the standard model of particle physics—yields a relation between the masses of the top quark, the so-called W boson, and the yet unobserved Higgs particle. Therefore, when one assumes validity of the model, it is even possible to take precise measurements of the top quark mass to predict the mass of the Higgs (and potentially other yet unobserved) particles.

Book excerpt: Since the discovery of the top quark in 1995 by the CDF and D0 collaborations at the Fermilab Tevatron proton antiproton collider, precise measurements of its mass are ongoing. Using data recorded by the D0 and CDF experiment, corresponding to up to the full Tevatron data sample, top quark mass measurements performed in different final states using various extraction techniques are presented in this article. The recent Tevatron top quark mass combination yields m_t=173.20 +-0.87 GeV. Furthermore, measurements of the top antitop quark mass difference from the Tevatron are discussed.

Book excerpt: We present two new measurements of the top-quark mass. On the other hand, the D0 experiment, using 125 pb−1 from Run I, and applying a new method that extracts information from data through a direct calculation of a probability for each event, obtains M{sub top} = 180.1 " 3.6{sub stat} " 4.0{sub syst} GeV/c2.

Book Top Quark Physics at Hadron Colliders

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This will be a required acquisition text for academic libraries. More than ten years after its discovery, still relatively little is known about the top quark, the heaviest known elementary particle. This extensive survey summarizes and reviews top-quark physics based on the precision measurements at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, as well as examining in detail the sensitivity of these experiments to new physics. Finally, the author provides an overview of top quark physics at the Large Hadron Collider.

Book Measurement of the Top Quark Mass in the All Hadronic Channel at the Tevatron

Download or read book Measurement of the Top Quark Mass in the All Hadronic Channel at the Tevatron written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents a measurement of the top quark mass in the all hadronic channel of the top quark pair production mechanism, using 1 fb-1 of pp collisions at s =1.96 TeV collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). Few novel techniques have been used in this measurement. A template technique was used to simultaneously determine the mass of the top quark and the energy scale of the jets. Two sets of distributions have been parameterized as a function of the top quark mass and jet energy scale. One set of distributions is built from the event-by-event reconstructed top masses, determined using the Standard Model matrix element for the tt all hadronic process. This set is sensitive to changes in the value of the top quark mass. The other set of distributions is sensitive to changes in the scale of jet energies and is built from the invariant mass of pairs of light flavor jets, providing an in situ calibration of the jet energy scale. The energy scale of the measured jets in the final state is expressed in units of its uncertainty, sigmac. The measured mass of the top quark is 171.1+/-3.7(stat.unc.)+/-2.1(syst.unc.) GeV/c 2 and to the date represents the most precise mass measurement in the all hadronic channel and third best overall.

Book excerpt: Preliminary results on the measurement of the top quark mass at the Tevatron Collider are presented. In the dilepton decay channel, the CDF Collaboration measures m{sub t} = 175.0{sub -16.9}{sup +17.4}(stat.)"8.4(syst.) GeV/c2, using a sample of (almost equal to) 126 pb−1 of proton-antiproton collision data at (square root)s = 1.96 TeV (Run II). In the lepton plus jets channel, the CDF Collaboration measures 177.5{sub -9.4}{sup +12.7}(stat.) " 7.1(syst.) GeV/c2, using a sample of (almost equal to) 102 pb−1 at (square root)s = 1.96 TeV. The D0 Collaboration has newly applied a likelihood technique to improve the analysis of (almost equal to) 125 pb−1 of proton-antiproton collisions at (square root)s = 1.8 TeV (Run I), with the result: m{sub t} = 180.1 " 3.6(stat.) "3.9(syst.) GeV/c2. The latter is combined with all the measurements based on the data collected in Run I to yield the most recent and comprehensive experimental determination of the top quark mass: m{sub t} = 178.0 " 2.7(stat.) " 3.3(syst.) GeV/c2.

Book Measurements of Top Quark Properties at the Tevatron Collider

Download or read book Measurements of Top Quark Properties at the Tevatron Collider written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery of the top quark in 1995 opened a whole new sector of investigation of the Standard Model; today top quark physics remains a key priority of the Tevatron program. Some of the measurements of top quark properties, for example its mass, will be a long-standing legacy. The recent evidence of an anomalously large charge asymmetry in top quark events suggests that new physics could couple preferably with top quarks. I will summarize this long chapter of particle physics history and discuss the road the top quark is highlighting for the LHC program.
