Book Measurements of Radiated Noise in the Caltech High speed Water Tunnel

Download or read book Measurements of Radiated Noise in the Caltech High speed Water Tunnel written by Steven J. Barker and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is the second part of a report on recent measurements of hydrodynamic noise in the Caltech High-Speed Water Tunnel. In the first part, results for noise radiated from fully wetted turbulent boundary layers were presented. In this part the results for cavitating flows are described. Because of the greater intensity of cavitation-produced noise, the signal to noise, ratio was much higher in these measurements than in the fully wetted case. Noise spectra were measured over a range of variations of flow velocity, cavitation number, and model configuration.

Book Effects of Boundary Layer Development on Cavitation Noise and Inception on a Hydrofoil

Download or read book Effects of Boundary Layer Development on Cavitation Noise and Inception on a Hydrofoil written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements are described of noise from cavitating flow over hydrofoils. The experiments were performed in a variable pressure water tunnel that was acoustically calibrated so that sound power levels could be deduced from the sound measurements. It was partially reverberant in the frequency range of interest. Cavitation was generated on the low-pressure side of a hydrofoil in the presence of a separated laminar boundary layer on the one hand and of a fully turbulent attached boundary layer on the other. The turbulent boundary layer was formed downstream of a trip, which was positioned near the leading edge. High-speed photographs show patterns of cavitation obtained in each case. Cavitation was also generated on the high-pressure side at negative angles of attack. The noise is shown to depend on the type of cavitation produced; for each type, dependence on speed and cavitation index has been determined. (Author).

Book Experimental Studies of Cavitation Noise in a Free jet Tunnel

Download or read book Experimental Studies of Cavitation Noise in a Free jet Tunnel written by C. S. Song and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of experimental studies on cavitation noise generated in the free-jet tunnel at St. Anthony Falls Hydraulic Laboratory in the period October 1960 to June 1961 are summarized. Two-dimensional test bodies of different shapes, such as a circular cylinder, wedge, and a TulinBurkhart hydrofoil were tested. Various types of cavitating flows, namely, transient cavities, steady-state cavities, and non-stationary cavities were covered. Special attention was given to the effect of ventilation on the intensity of cavitation noise. Effects of body size and the presence of a solid boundary were also investigated. (Author).

Book Mechanics of Underwater Noise

Download or read book Mechanics of Underwater Noise written by Donald Ross and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanics of Underwater Noise elucidates the basic mechanisms by which noise is generated, transmitted by structures and radiated into the sea. Organized into 10 chapters, this book begins with a description of noise, decibels and levels, significance of spectra, and passive sonar equation. Subsequent chapters discuss sound waves in liquids; acoustic radiation fundamentals; wind-generated ocean ambient noise; vibration isolation and structural damping; and radiation by plate flexural vibrations. Other chapters address cavitation, propeller cavitation noise, radiation by fluctuating-force (dipole) sources, and mechanical noise sources. This book will be helpful as a self-education text and as a reference for workers in the field.

Book Bubble Dynamics and Resulting Noise from Traveling Bubble Cavitation

Download or read book Bubble Dynamics and Resulting Noise from Traveling Bubble Cavitation written by Richard Chostner Marboe and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acoustic noise spectrum associated with traveling bubble cavitation on a Schiebe headform in a variable pressure water tunnel was measured over the 2.5 to 80 kHz frequency range. Bubble dynamics were observed through video taping and the nuclei distribution was obtained holographically. Observed noise spectra showed that low frequency noise can be modeled by incompressible theory. High frequency noise, apparently resulting from a shock wave, can be modeled by compressible theory. The spectrum was seen to shift toward lower frequencies than predicted possibly due to axisymmetric bubble collapse. The spectral energy per bubble was experimentally derived and was found to be a reasonable approximation to that predicted by incompressible theory over the cavitation number range tested. The collapse peak pressure amplitude distribution, the maximum bubble radius distribution and the nuclei distribution were all found to be lognormal. (Author).

Book Installation of a Rectangular Test Section for Acoustic Water Tunnel Studies of Flow Induced Noise

Download or read book Installation of a Rectangular Test Section for Acoustic Water Tunnel Studies of Flow Induced Noise written by Howard H. Schloemer and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A second leg was added to an existing pump driven, continuous flow, closed loop acoustic water tunnel to provide a capability for measuring flow-induced noise effects and the effects of surface roughness, protuberances, depressions, and pressure gradients on turbulent boundary layer wall-pressure fluctuations. The leg consists of a rectangular test section 4 inches high at the entrance and 4.5 inches high at the exit, with a constant width of 12 inches over a length of 90 inches. The report describes the design and construction of the new section and related components and the results of hydrodynamic and acoustic measurements. (Modified author abstract).
