Book Arithmetic Determining the Achievement of Pupils in the Addition of Fractions

Download or read book Arithmetic Determining the Achievement of Pupils in the Addition of Fractions written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arithmetic Determining the Achievement of Pupils in the Addition of Fractions: Bulletin No; VII. Of the Department of Educational Investigation and Measurement; March, 1916 During the past few years educational measurement has been applied to arithmetic more than to any other subject, largely because of the ease with which papers can be scored. This application of educational measurement has been largely limited to work with integers. In Boston, the Courtis Standard Tests, Series A or B, have been given since 1912. Until December, 1915, no other phases of arithmetic work were subjected to scientific measurement. Inasmuch as a system for giving the Courtis tests has been worked out, and also because definite improvement in the use of whole numbers is being secured, the time seemed appropriate for extending educational measurement to other phases of arithmetic. As a result, a group of teachers and masters was selected in December, 1914, to constitute a Committee on Standards in Arithmetic, for the purpose of making a study of the problems involved in the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions. This book was released on 2016-12-24 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fourth Annual Conference on Educational Measurements: Held at Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind., Friday and Saturday, April 20 and 21, 1917 Tiie fourth annual conference on educational measurements has still continued in part the lines of discussion inaugurated in the three previous conferences relative to the measurement of achievement in certain school subjects. This is particularly true in arithmetic and reading. The two studies on the measurement of arithmetical abilities in Indiana published in 1915 and 1916 by Dr. Melvin E. Haggerty have stimulated a third survey in arithmetic in which twenty-seven towns and cities participated, the complete results of which will soon go to press. A brief report of the study by Dean H. L. Smith given at the conference has been incorporated in this bulletin. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book An Investigation of Certain Abilities Fundamental to the Study of Geometry Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Investigation of Certain Abilities Fundamental to the Study of Geometry Classic Reprint written by John Harrison Minnick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Investigation of Certain Abilities, Fundamental to the Study of Geometry In 1911 - 12 the author had charge of about forty pupils in second-term plane geometry in the Bloomington, Indiana, high school. Most of these pupils came from good homes and apparently should have been able to do satisfactory work. Such, however, was not the case. Crudely constructed tests revealed almost complete lack of certain abilities believed to be fundamental to the study of geometry. Special attention given to these abilities resulted in a decided improvement in the work of the group. Since then the author has experimented along these same lines with other classes and in the light of this experi ence it seemed desirable to determine the relation of these specific abilities to general geometrical ability. During the years 1915 17 he conducted an extensive investigation which is reported in the following pages. So far as the author knows, no similar investigation has been carried on in this field. L. V. Stockard and J. Carlton Belll have made A Preliminary Study of the Measurement of Abili ties in Geometry, but it does not cover the ground of this investigation. Suggestions as to methods of procedure and of handling the data have been gathered from the following Thorndike's Mental and Social Measurements, Brown's Mental Measurement, King's Elements of Statistical Methods, Buckingham's Spelling Ability - Its Measurement and Distribution, Stone's Arithmetical Abilities, Some Factors Determining Them Trabue's completion-test Language Scales, and Woody 5 Measurements of Some Achievements in Arithmetic. Book Elementary School Standards

Download or read book Elementary School Standards written by Frank M. McMurry and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary School Standards: Instruction Course of Study; Supervision; Applied to New York City The problems dealt with by Professor McMurry in this book cover one of the most important fields included in the New York City School Inquiry. His task was to arrive at a just estimate of the quality of the teaching, the course of study, and the supervision by the principals in the elementary schools. This task naturally led him to formulate standards of value, whereby the work of the elementary schools could be appraised. Rejecting the usual examinations as inadequate and unsatisfactory for his purpose, Professor McMurry has judged the quality of the teaching, course of study, and supervision by the degree to which all three are controlled by purposes of recognized value in daily living. His formulation of the standards on which his judgments are based and his detailed descriptions of the application of those standards to the actual work of the schools will be useful, we believe, to earnest teachers everywhere. Professor McMurry did not attempt to make these standards all-embracing, but they are so fundamental to satisfactory plans and procedure in elementary school work that, whatever limitations as to scope and variety they may possess, all good elementary schools must conform to them. Further, they point the way to progressive improvement where improvement is desirable. This book is, accordingly, not merely a report made by one of my associates in the New York City School Inquiry; it is a contribution to the professional resources of teachers and supervising officers wherever their lot may be cast. Book Educational Tests for Use in High Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book Educational Tests for Use in High Schools Classic Reprint written by Walter Scott Monroe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-27 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Tests for Use in High Schools Limitations Of achievement tests for use in the high school. In addition to the general limitations of educational tests, certain ones are introduced by the nature of the educational objectives of the high school. The function of an achievement test is to yield measures of the extent to which pupils have attained certain objectives which have been set for them. For example, if we accept as an objective in the field of spelling the ability to spell correctly a certain list of 1000 words, a test for this field should yield a measure of the ability of pupils to spell these 1000 words correctly. Similarly in the field of arithmetic an achievement test implies certain objectives and its function is to measure the degree to which pupils have achieved these objectives. Book Alternative Approaches to the Assessment of Achievement

Download or read book Alternative Approaches to the Assessment of Achievement written by David L. McArthur and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ingrained for many years in the science of educational assessment were a large number of "truths" about how to make sense out of testing results, artful wisdoms that appear to have held away largely by force of habit alone. Practitioners and researchers only occasionally agreed about how tests should be designed, and were even further apart when they came to interpreting test responses by any means other than categorically "right" or "wrong." Even the best innovations were painfully slow to be incorporated into practice. The traditional approach to testing was developed to accomplish only two tasks: to provide ranking of students, or to select relatively small proportions of students for special treatment. In these tasks it was fairly effective, but it is increasingly seen as inadequate for the broader spectrum of issues that educational measurement is now called upon to address. Today the range of questions being asked of educational test data is itself growing by leaps and bounds. Fortunately, to meet this challenge we have available a wide panoply of resource tools for assessment which deserve serious attention. Many of them have exceptionally sOphisticated mathematical foundations, and succeed well where older and less versatile techniques fail dismally. Yet no single new tool can conceivably cover the entire arena.
