Book Measurements of Production and Decay Properties of Bs Mesons Decaying Into J psi Phi with the CMS Detector at the LHC

Download or read book Measurements of Production and Decay Properties of Bs Mesons Decaying Into J psi Phi with the CMS Detector at the LHC written by Giordano Cerizza and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The production of hadrons containing b-quarks has been measured in proton anti-proton collisions up to center-of-mass energies of 1:96 TeV at the Tevatron. Information at lower energy is provided by electron-positron collision experiments. The underlying theory of hadronic interactions is tuned to those data but cannot reliably predict reaction rates from first principles for higher energies. Therefore, it is important to test the extrapolations and optimize model parameters for the new energy regime at the LHC. The b-hadrons from proton-proton collisions are a major source of background in searches for the Higgs boson and other heavy not-yet-discovered particles. Hence, it is important to quantify their presence in different reactions for the main research program at the LHC. The measurement of the Bs-meson production cross section presented in this dissertation complements the measurements for the B+ and the Bd mesons. The outcome is compared to different models for quark production and hadronization. The three CMS measurement of B-meson production cross sections are used to calculate the Bs to J/psi phi branching fraction. The measurement of the time-dependent decay rate of Bs mesons probes the weak interaction and includes the possibility to observe sizable particle anti-particle asymmetries caused by heavy particles and new forces between them that are not predicted by the Standard Model. In this dissertation the lifetime, lifetime difference, and CP-composition in the decay Bs to J/psi phi have been extracted with a Maximum Likelihood fit. The J/psi meson decays into two muons, while the phi meson into two charged kaons. The results are presented for the data recorded during the year 2010 with the Compact Muon Solenoid. It is a general-purpose particle detector centered at one of the interaction points of the Large Hadron Collider, a proton-proton collider located at the particle physics laboratory CERN in Geneva (Switzerland). It is designed to explore a wide range of physics in proton-proton collisions. The investigations presented here assess and benchmark the performance of a variety of detector components including track and muon reconstruction. For reconstruction of long-lived particles, such as the b-hadrons, the silicon pixel detector provides the most signicant information.

Book Lifetime Difference and CP Asymmetry in the Bs J psi Phi Decay

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The B{sub s} meson is an interesting particle to study because a sizable mixing induced CP violation in the B{sub s} -- {bar B}{sub s} system would be an indication for physics beyond the Standard Model. In this paper we present a measurement of the lifetime difference [Delta][Gamma] between the B{sub s} mass eigenstates and the CP violating phase in the decay B{sub s} → J/[psi][phi]. In 1.7 fb−1 of data collected with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron p{bar p} collider we measure [Delta][Gamma] = 0.076{sup +0.059}{sub -0.063} (stat.) ±0.006 (syst.) ps−1, well consistent with the Standard Model prediction, and a mean B{sub s} lifetime of c{sub tau}{sub s} = 456 ± 13 (stat.) ± (syst.) [mu]m. We find no evidence for CP violation.

Book Flow of phi Mesons in Proton lead Collisions at the Large Hadron Collider with the Compact Muon Solenoid Detector

Download or read book Flow of phi Mesons in Proton lead Collisions at the Large Hadron Collider with the Compact Muon Solenoid Detector written by Mukund Madhav Varma and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of two-particle angular correlations between unidentified charged particles and [phi]-mesons are shown over a wide pseudorapidity range ([delta] [eta] 2) in pPb collisions. The data, collected during 2013 pPb run at a nucleon-nucleon center-ofmass energy of 5.02 TeV with the CMS detector, corresponds to a total integrated luminosity of aproximately 35nb-1. [Phi]-mesons are reconstructed via their hadronic decay channel, [phi] -- K+K-, for high multiplicity events. The observed two-particle long range correlations are quantified by the second-order Fourier coefficients (v2) as a function of transverse momentum. The v2 of [phi]-mesons is compared to that of other identified particles, to study the mass ordering and quark number scaling effects in measurements of elliptic flow.

Book Observation of a Peaking Structure in the J psi phi Mass Spectrum from B pm to J psi phi K pm Decays

Download or read book Observation of a Peaking Structure in the J psi phi Mass Spectrum from B pm to J psi phi K pm Decays written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A peaking structure in the J/psi phi mass spectrum near threshold is observed in B(+/- ) to J/psi phi K(+/- ) decays, produced in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The data sample, selected on the basis of the dimuon decay mode of the J/psi, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.2 inverse femtobarns. Fitting the structure to an S-wave relativistic Breit-Wigner lineshape above a three-body phase-space nonresonant component gives a signal statistical significance exceeding five standard deviations. The fitted mass and width values are m = 4148.0 +- 2.4 (stat.) +- 6.3 (syst.) MeV and Gamma = 28 +15 -11 (stat.) +- 19 (syst.) MeV, respectively. Evidence for an additional peaking structure at higher J/psi phi mass is also reported.

Book Measurement of the B c Meson Lifetime Using B c2 J Psi L X Decays

Download or read book Measurement of the B c Meson Lifetime Using B c2 J Psi L X Decays written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a measurement of the average proper decay time of the B±c mesons, the ground state of bottom and charm quark bound states. The lifetime measurement is carried out in the decay modes B±c → J/[Psi] + e± + X and B±c → J/[Psi] + [mu]± + X, where the J/[Psi] decays as J/[Psi] → [mu]+[mu]- and the X are unmeasured particles such as ve or v[mu]. The data are collect by the CDF II detector which measures the properties of particles created in √s = 1.96 TeV p$\bar{p}$ collisions delivered by the Fermilab Tevatron. This measurement uses ~ 1 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. The measured average proper decay time of B±c mesons, [tau] = 0.475-0.049+0.053(stat.) ± 0.018(syst.) ps, is competitive with the most precise measurements in the world and confirms previous measurements and theoretical predictions.

Book Establishment of Bs Meson Production at the Psi 5S Energy Using Beauty and Charm Decays

Download or read book Establishment of Bs Meson Production at the Psi 5S Energy Using Beauty and Charm Decays written by Radia Sia and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To constrain our knowledge of Bs production at the Upsilon(5S) by making other measurements with other model dependencies, we examine CLEO-c data for other particle species than Ds, that are produced with much higher rate in Bs meson decays than in B meson decays. Such particle like eta, eta' and &phis;, with their ss quark composition, are expected to be enhanced in Ds than in D meson decays. We therefore measure the inclusive branching fractions of charm mesons, namely D0, D + and D+s , into etaX, eta'X, and &phis;X decays. We find that the rates from D+s are much larger than from D0 and D+.

Book Precision Measurement of the Higgs Boson Mass and Search for Dilepton Mass Resonances in H to 4l Decays Using the CMS Detector at the LHC

Download or read book Precision Measurement of the Higgs Boson Mass and Search for Dilepton Mass Resonances in H to 4l Decays Using the CMS Detector at the LHC written by Jake Rosenzweig and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expectations of the total uncertainty are placed on the Higgs boson mass (mH) in the H to ZZstar to 4l (l = e, mu) decay channel. The value of mH, including statistical and systematic uncertainties, is estimated to be mH = 125.38 +- 0.11 [0.11 (stat.) +- 0.02 (syst.)] GeV. Once the data are unblinded, this measurement is predicted to be the world's most precise measurement of mH to date. The data used in the analysis were produced by proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) with a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV during Run 2 (2016-2018), corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137.1 fb-1, and were collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment. Using data sets from the same LHC run period, a search for low-mass dilepton resonances in Higgs boson decays to the 4l final state is also conducted. The Hidden Abelian Higgs Model is used in the search for a beyond the Standard Model dark photon (ZD) particle. Constraints are placed at 95% confidence level on the Higgs-mixing parameter k
