Book excerpt: Inspired by new detector instrumentation that is insensitive to gamma-ray background and improved deuteron-beam bunching and sweeping of the ICT accelerator, we have measured the high-energy (2 less than E/sub n/ less than 15 MeV) neutron emission spectra from spherical targets of nitrogen, oxygen, tungsten, 235U, 238U, and 239Pu. The targets were pulsed at the center by a nominal 14-MeV neutron source at the LLL time-of-flight facility. The neutron source was obtained from the T(d, n)4He reaction with a pulsed 400-keV deuteron beam, produced by the LLL ICT accelerator. Collimated scintillation detectors at 26° and 120° with respect to the deutron beam and at flight paths from 7.5-9.8 m recorded the neutron time-of-flight spectra.

Book excerpt: New measurements of the neutron and gamma-ray emission spectra from materials of interest to thermonuclear reactors with a 14 MeV neutron source were done during 1986 and 1987. These measurements characterized by better resolution than those reported in the Summary published in 1982, were performed using the pulsed sphere and time-of-flight techniques. The detector used in these measurements was a NE-213 cylinder, 5.08 cm in diameter by 5.08 cm thick. The new measurements include the following materials: Be, C, N, H2O, C2F4 (teflon), Al, Si, Ti, Fe, Cu, Ta, W, Au, Pb, 232Th, and 238U. For all these materials, both the neutron and gamma emission spectra were measured. A complete tabulation of all the measurements done under the Pulse Sphere Program is presented. 37 refs., 1 tab.

It presents information on compact instruments with high neutron yield to be used for neutron activation analysis (NAA) and prompt gamma neutron activation analysis in combination with high count rate spectrometers. Traditional NGs have been shown to be effective for applications including borehole logging, homeland security, nuclear medicine and the on-line analysis of aluminium, coal and cement. Pulsed fast thermal neutron analysis, as well as tagged and timed neutron analysis, are additional techniques which can be applied using NG. Furthermore, NG can effectively be used for elemental analysis and is also effective for analysis of hidden materials by neutron radiography. Useful guidelines for developing NG based research laboratories are also provided in this publication.

Measurements were made for incident deuteron energies from 2.6 to 7.0-MeV, at 0.4-MeV intervals, using time-of-flight techniques with flight paths of 2.7 and 6.8 meters.
