Book excerpt: This work of thesis will investigate the heavy flavor sector, involving decays of particles containing the most massive quarks. In particular, we will study the bhadrons, that means particles containing b-quarks. The topic of this work is the measurements of B and CP asymmetries of two-body charmless decays of neutral b-hadrons, (B0 (s) → h+h' - and [Lambda]0 b →and ph -, where the h can be a pion or a kaon) collectively called B → h+h' -. Next sections describe the theoretical framework in which the b-hadrons are included. Firstly, it is necessary to introduce the CKM matrix describing the electroweak interactions between quarks and how the phenomenon of the CP violation manifests itself.

In the following I report some recent results on hadronic decays: the evidence for the charmless annihilation decay mode B{sub s}° →?+?−, and the first reconstruction in hadron collisions of the suppressed decays B− → D(→ K+?°)K− and B− → D(→ K+?−)?−.

The data-set for these measurements amounts to 1fb−1 of p{bar p} collisions at a center of mass energy 1.96TeV. We report on the first observation of the Bs->Kpi, Lb-ppi and Lb->pK decay modes and on the measurement of their branching fractions and direct CP asymmetries.

The data were taken with the BABAR detector during its first run at the PEP-II asymmetric e[sup +]e[sup -] collider. Measurements of these modes using a counting technique are presented with the branching fractions [Beta](B[sup 0] [yields] [phi]K[sup 0]) = (9.3 [+-] 3.4(stat.) [+-] 1.1(syst.)) x 10[sup -6] with a significance of 4.9[sigma], and [Beta](B[sup 0] [yields] K*[sup +][pi][sup -]) = (20.8 [+-] 9.3(stat.) [+-] 2.1(syst.)) x 10[sup -6] with a significance of 3.0[sigma]. For the latter, an upper limit of [Beta](B[sup 0] [yields] K*[sup +][pi][sup -])

The measurements are based on a data set of 348 fb-1 of e+e- collisions at √s = 10.58 GeV recorded with the BABAR detector. Assuming isospin symmetry, measured pionic branching fractions are combined into [beta](B0 → [pi]-l+vl) = (1.54 ± 0.17(stat) ± 0.09(syst)) x 10-4. First evidence of the B+ → [eta]l+vl decay is seen; its branching fraction is measured to be [beta](B+ →[eta]l+vl) = (0.64 ± 0.20(stat) ± 0.03(syst)) x 10-4. Book excerpt: The authors present preliminary results of a search for several exclusive charmless hadronic B decays from electron-positron annihilation data collected by the BaBar detector near the Upsilon(4S) resonance. These include three-body decay modes with final states h"h{sup minus-plus}h" and h"h{sup minus-plus}pi°, and quasi-two-body decay modes with final states X°h and X°K{sub S}°, where h = pi or K and X° = eta-prime or omega. They find beta(B° --> rho{sup minus-plus}pi{sup "}) = (49"135{sup +6}) x 10−6 and beta(B --> eta-prime-K+) = (62"18{+-}8) x 10−6 and present upper limits for right other decays.

Book excerpt: We report recent measurements of the CKM angle [alpha] using data collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy ee− collider at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. In addition to improved constraints on [alpha] from the decays B{sup {+-}} 2![rho]{sup {+-}}[rho]°, we also present preliminary results of neutral and charged B meson decays to K1(1270)[pi] and K1(1400)[pi] and its impact on the estimate for the CKM angle [alpha] based on time-dependent analysis of CP-violating asymmetries in B° 2!a1(1260){sup {+-}} [pi]{sup {-+}}. Moreover we report the first observation of the decay B 2!a1(1260){sup {+-}}a1(1260){sup {-+}}; this mode can be used, in principle, to provide an independent measurement of [alpha].
