Book Measurements of a Three dimensional Shock boundary Layer Interaction

Download or read book Measurements of a Three dimensional Shock boundary Layer Interaction written by David Benjamin Helmer and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of measurements were taken of the shock-boundary layer interaction (SBLI) in a Mach 2.1 continuously operated wind tunnel. The SBLI was generated by a small (~1.1mm tall) 20° wedge located on the top wall, and data were taken both in the region near the compression wedge and in the area where this shock impinged on the bottom wall. PIV was the primary measurement tool in both locations, though pressure data were also acquired near the compression wedge. Data were acquired at 4 spanwise locations to study the three-dimensionality of the flow. Both interactions were found to be highly 3-D, with a stronger interaction observed near the channel centerline. Evidence of a corner vortical structure in the compression corner was observed, and substantiated by CFD. Intermittent flow reversal was seen in the reflected shock interaction near the channel centerline, though not in the corners. The data suggest the presence of vortical structures generated near the channel centerline and pushed towards the sidewalls. Following the characterization of the base case, a Monte Carlo experiment was performed in which geometric perturbations were installed along the bottom wall of the wind tunnel and their effect on the flow was studied. The Monte Carlo device was designed and installed at the location predicted to be most sensitive by CFD. The majority of the locations initially tested displayed minimal sensitivity, with only the largest and most upstream quasi-2D cases showing significant effects on the flow at the corner. The perturbation device was redesigned and moved upstream, and additional quasi-2D cases were tested. It was found that some configurations accelerated the flow and strengthened the primary shock, while others slowed the flow and weakened the shock. Overall, the flow was observed to be very sensitive to some perturbations, but only to those located within a limited range of streamwise positions, and with a wide variety of system responses possible.

Book Velocity Measurements in a 3D Three Dimensional Shock Wave Laminar Boundary Layer Interaction

Download or read book Velocity Measurements in a 3D Three Dimensional Shock Wave Laminar Boundary Layer Interaction written by G. Degrez and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the three dimensional laminar boundary layer separation associated with an incident swept shock wave was conducted in the von Karman Institute (VKI) S-1 supersonic wind tunnel operating at Mach 2.15. Mean velocity profiles were measured both in the attached separated and reattachment flow regions using a laser doppler velocimeter. A comparison of the measurements with a full 3D Navier-Stokes solver, developed at the VKI, exhibited good agreement in all three regions, thus validating the code which was based on the Beam-Warming algorithm. The report also reviews the earlier parts of the grant dealing with the necessary developments in LDV to achieve high quality data, and the of the 2D shock boundary layer interaction. Keywords: Two dimensional flow; Three dimensional flow; Laminar boundary layer; Flow separation.

Book Shock Boundary Layer Interaction Model for Three Dimensional Transonic Flow Calculations

Download or read book Shock Boundary Layer Interaction Model for Three Dimensional Transonic Flow Calculations written by J. D. McLean and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new computational model for three-dimensional shock-boundary layer interaction has been developed for use in viscous transonic flow calculations. In general, the new model has been found to be an improvement over the old method in which the boundary-layer equations are simply integrated through the shock. The basic empirical content of the method was tested against detailed boundary-layer measurements in two-dimensional transonic airfoil flows, and the new model was found, in general, to give better agreement with experiment. The new model has also been tested in coupled viscous-inviscid interaction calculations for wings and for nacelles.

Book Shock Wave Boundary Layer Interactions

Download or read book Shock Wave Boundary Layer Interactions written by Holger Babinsky and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-12 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shock wave-boundary-layer interaction (SBLI) is a fundamental phenomenon in gas dynamics that is observed in many practical situations, ranging from transonic aircraft wings to hypersonic vehicles and engines. SBLIs have the potential to pose serious problems in a flowfield; hence they often prove to be a critical - or even design limiting - issue for many aerospace applications. This is the first book devoted solely to a comprehensive, state-of-the-art explanation of this phenomenon. It includes a description of the basic fluid mechanics of SBLIs plus contributions from leading international experts who share their insight into their physics and the impact they have in practical flow situations. This book is for practitioners and graduate students in aerodynamics who wish to familiarize themselves with all aspects of SBLI flows. It is a valuable resource for specialists because it compiles experimental, computational and theoretical knowledge in one place.

Book Experimental Investigation of Three Dimensional Shock Wave Turbulent Boundary Layer Interaction An Exploratory Study of Blunt Fin Induced Flows

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of Three Dimensional Shock Wave Turbulent Boundary Layer Interaction An Exploratory Study of Blunt Fin Induced Flows written by David S. Dolling and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study of three-dimensional (3-D) shock wave turbulent boundary layer interaction has been carried out. Interactions generated by fin models having sharp and hemi-cylindrically blunted leading edges have been studied. The emphasis in this particular study was twofold. First, the influence of incoming turbulent boundary layer thickness delta on the streamwise, spanwise and vertical scaling of the interaction was examined. Turbulent boundary layers varying in thickness from .127 cm (.05 in.) to 2.27 cm (0.89 in.) were used. In addition, a study has been conducted to examine the effects of the ratio D/delta (where D is the blunt fin leading edge diameter) on the interaction properties and scaling. Second, an investigation has been started to examine the unsteady shock wave-boundary layer structure and the resulting high frequency, large amplitude pressure fluctuations which occur ahead of and around the blunt fin leading edge. This is an area which in the past has been largely ignored, yet has important implications, since it is not clear that any mean surface property or flowfield measurements have any real physical significant. To date, measurement techniques and computer software have been developed and exploratory measurements made in the undisturbed turbulent boundary layer and also on the plane of symmetry ahead of the blunt fin.

Book An Exploratory Study of a Three Dimensional Shock Wave Boundary Layer Interaction at Mach 3

Download or read book An Exploratory Study of a Three Dimensional Shock Wave Boundary Layer Interaction at Mach 3 written by B. Oskam and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploratory experimental investigation has been carried out on the three dimensional flow fields caused by the interaction of oblique shock waves and a planar turbulent boundary layer. The study was performed at a free stream Mach number of 2.95, a Reynolds number per inch of 1.6 million and near adiabatic wall conditions. The interaction was studied on two experimental configurations having different initial boundary layer thicknesses (delta = approx. 0.13 and 0.55 inches). Both surface measurements as well as complete flow field surveys were performed. The main contributions of the present investigation are two experimentally derived flow field models for shock generator angles of 4 deg and 10 deg. Based upon both static pressure and surface flow patterns, as well as heat transfer data, the interaction region can be characterized as quasi-two-dimensional along the shock direction in the region studied. A critical examination of the occurrence of 'ordinary' flow separation and its character, as applied to the present problem, was carried out. It was concluded that McCabe's criterion, as used by the previous investigators, is not a sufficient condition to determine the onset of flow separation.

Book Experimental Study of Three Dimensional Shock Wave Turbulent Boundary Layer Interaction Scaling of Sharp and Blunt Fin Induced Flowfields

Download or read book Experimental Study of Three Dimensional Shock Wave Turbulent Boundary Layer Interaction Scaling of Sharp and Blunt Fin Induced Flowfields written by David S. Dolling and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 61 pages. Tests have been made using incoming turbulent boundary layer varying in thickness in the ratio of about 4:1. Extensive surface property measurements have been made on the test surface on which the incoming boundary layer developed and on the fin itself. All of these tests were carried out at a nominal freestream Mach number of 3, a freestream unit Reynolds number of about 63 million per meter, and under approximately adiabatic wall conditions. The emphasis in the study reported on in this paper was on two main areas. First, to determine the key geometric and/or flow parameters controlling the overall scaling and characteristics of both blunt and sharp fin-induced interactions. Second, to identify the conditions under which both blunt and sharp fins induced interactions have the same local scale and characteristics. (Author).

Book Shock Wave Turbulent Boundary Layer Interactions in Two and Three Dimensions

Download or read book Shock Wave Turbulent Boundary Layer Interactions in Two and Three Dimensions written by Gary S. Settles and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basic experimental research was conducted in two and three-dimensional shock wave/boundary layer interactions and associated turbulence measurements. The primary emphasis has been in exploring the important but little-known range of three-dimensional interactions at high speeds. Building on previous work, a series of parametric experiments and a detailed analysis have led to the synthesis of scaling laws for Reynolds number effects on these interactions. Further experiments continued the adaptation and use of hot-wire anemometry in high-Reynolds number supersonic flows. Hot-wire surveys were made in the previously-explored flowfield of a reattaching free shear layer, and in the interaction generated by a two-dimensional compression corner of 8 deg deflection angle at Mach 3. Other research activities, including technique, instrumentation, and facility development are summarized in this report.

Book A Documentation of Two And Three Dimensional Shock Separated Turbulent Boundary Layers

This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A shock-related separation of a turbulent boundary layer has been studied and documented. The flow was that of an axisymmetric turbulent boundary layer over a 5.02-cm-diam cylinder that was aligned with the wind tunnel axis. The boundary layer was compressed by a 30 deg half-angle conical flare, with the cone axis inclined at an angle alpha to the cylinder axis. Nominal test conditions were P sub tau equals 1.7 atm and M sub infinity equals 2.85. Measurements were confined to the upper-symmetry, phi equals 0 deg, plane. Data are presented for the cases of alpha equal to 0. 5. and 10 deg and include mean surface pressures, streamwise and normal mean velocities, kinematic turbulent stresses and kinetic energies, as well as reverse-flow intermittencies. All data are given in tabular form; pressures, streamwise velocities, turbulent shear stresses, and kinetic energies are also presented graphically. Brown, J. D. and Brown, J. L. and Kussoy, M. I. Download or read book A Three Dimensional Study of Fin Induced Shock Wave Turbulent Boundary Layer Interaction written by D. S. Dolling and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface pressure distributions and oil streak patterns have been measured in the three-dimensional flowfield caused by the interaction of a skewed shock wave with a two-dimensional turbulent boundary layer. The boundary layer was developing on a 45 deg sweptback, sharp leading edged plate. Tests were made at a freestream Mach number of 2.95, a freestream unit Reynolds number of 63,000,000/m (1,600,000/in), a stagnation temperature of about 265 K and at near adiabatic wall temperature. Measurements have been made for generator angles in the range 0 to 12 deg in 2 deg increments. These measurements represent the first phase of a study which will include heat transfer measurements and details of the flowfield. The measured data are presented and compared with data obtained under the same shock wave conditions but with a different boundary layer. (Author).

Book Three Dimensional Shock Wave and Turbulent Boundary Layer Interactions

Download or read book Three Dimensional Shock Wave and Turbulent Boundary Layer Interactions written by Seymour M. Bogdonoff and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extensive experimental study of three-dimensional shock wave turbulent boundary layer interactions caused by shock generators defined solely by angles has been carried out at Mach 3. Sharp fins, sharp swept fins, swept wedges, and semi-cones have been used to generate a wide range of shock waves. The interaction of these waves with turbulent boundary layers has been investigated by surface flow visualization, mean surface static pressure distributions, flowfield surveys of total pressure and yaw, and several flowfield visualization techniques. Some exploratory high frequency surface pressure measurements have been carried out to evaluate the steadiness of these interactions. Scaling laws for both surface and flowfield features have been derived. Some limited studies were carried out at a Mach number of 2. A flowfield study has shown that the initial part of interactions caused by the same strength and geometrical shock wave generated by different shock generators are all similar. The 'footprints' of the interactions, as shown by surface flow visualization, can be categorized as approximately conical or cylindrical, and the boundaries between these two regions have been defined for both Mach 3 and Mach 2. There are still questions with regards to the detailed flowfield structures and physical mechanisms, but the three-dimensional interactions appeared to be less unsteady than that of two-dimensional separated flows.
