The Society paid 30 guineas for the suggestion, and later the work was taken up by J. Whitehurst with the result that the distance between the positions of the weight when vibrating 42 and 84 times a minute was inches. The method was not further developed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gaging Tools and Methods: Measuring Instruments Used by Machinists and Toolmakers The standard bar thus marked was taken to Washington and com pared with the government standard Bronze No. 11 and also with Low Moor iron No. 57. In comparing these standards, a method was employed very similar to that used in marking. The bar, properly supported, Was placed upon a box that rested upon rolls and onthis same box was placed the government standard with which the Brown Sharpe standard was to be compared. Both the government standard and the bar to be tested were placed in position under the microscope and by the micrometer screw of the microscope the variation between the two was measured. Three comparisons or tests were made on each end before determining the reading of the microscope, and after these comparisons the value of the B. S. Standard No. 2 was found to be inches for the yard, and meter for the meter. After completing this work, a second standard known as No. 3 was prepared, and comparison with the government standard showed the error to be inch for the yard, and 0000005 meter for the meter. After establishing a yard in this manner, the next problem was that of obtaining an inch; this was done by subdividing the yard into two equal parts, and then further subdividing these two divisions into three, and the three into six, thus giving thirty-six subdivisions or inches. One indicated the current temperature, a second the maximum temperature, and a third the minimum temperature. The thermometers can be purchased with different stem lengths for different soil depths. Van Bavel and Forrest (5) concluded that these thermometers were accurate to less than 1° F., were easy to read, and could withstand normal field exposure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Measure Other studies have been made. One of similar character, which has led to the formation of a spelling scale, was conducted by Dr. Leonard P. Ayres. Dr. Ayres examined a total Of words written by 2500 different persons. This was a summary of previous studies. The first of these studies included in all about words taken from standard literary selections. The second was an analysis of 250 different articles which appeared in four Sunday news papers published in Buffalo. The third consisted of the tabulations of words from 2000 Short business letters. The fourth consisted of some words taken from the family correspondence of 13 adults. The Ayres study has the advantage of being based upon the words used by adults, and if we assume that the schools must prepare for active social participation on the adult level, then certainly Dr. Ayres' study would be above criticism from the standpoint Of determining the fundamental words of the English language in common use for writing purposes. The Jones study and the Ayres study are in complete agree ment as to the simplicity and small compass of the writing vocabulary. Any adequate test must be based upon the words of the language that are in common use and fundamental in written work.
