Book Measurements and Standards in Plasma Physics and Astrophysics at the National Bureau of Standards Classic Reprint

Download or read book Measurements and Standards in Plasma Physics and Astrophysics at the National Bureau of Standards Classic Reprint written by Lewis M. Branscomb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Measurements and Standards in Plasma-Physics and Astrophysics at the National Bureau of Standards To relate the many fields of specialization, a more basic approach is needed, which in essence creates a single broad problem and treats this problem from a systematic and quantitative point of view. The long-range objective is therefore the solution of the many-body problem of modern atomic physics in its full generality. Required to accomplish this goal are precision measurements and calculations of the many atomic and collective parameters which govern the behavior of the hot plasma or gas and which provide the diagnostic tools for a description of the state of the gas. This book was released on 1960 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Bureau of Standards has embarked on a special program to unify and accelerate its research on hot gases. This work will provide data and theory presently required for the quantitative interpretation of astrophysical and geophysical observations and the measurement of properties of plasmas in the laboratory. The data, measurement techniques, and theoretical methods of analysis draw on activities in the fields on atomic and molecular physics, statistical mechanics and thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and theoretical astrophysics and geophysics. Both the Washington and Boulder laboratories of the NBS are participating. This note describes the technical objectives of the program and includes in appendices a selected list of papers published at the NBS for the period 1955-1959 and a partial list of Bureau participants.

Book An Introduction to Plasma Astrophysics and Magnetohydrodynamics

Download or read book An Introduction to Plasma Astrophysics and Magnetohydrodynamics written by M. Goossens and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the visible matter in the universe exists in the plasma state. Plasmas are of major importance for space physics, solar physics, and astrophysics. On Earth they are essential for magnetic controlled thermonuclear fusion. This textbook collects lecture notes from a one-semester course taught at the K.U. Leuven to advanced undergraduate students in applied mathematics and physics. A particular strength of this book is that it provides a low threshold introduction to plasmas with an emphasis on first principles and fundamental concepts and properties. The discussion of plasma models is to a large extent limited to Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) with its merits and limitations clearly explained. MHD provides the students on their first encounter with plasmas, with a powerful plasma model that they can link to familiar classic fluid dynamics. The solar wind is studied as an example of hydrodynamics and MHD at work in solar physics and astrophysics.

Book Precision Measurement and Fundamental Constants

Download or read book Precision Measurement and Fundamental Constants written by D. N. Langenberg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Precision Measurement and Fundamental Constants: Proceedings of the International Conference Held at the National Bureau of Standards, Gaithersburg, Maryland, August 3-7, 1970 In all of our fundamental theories there appear a certain few parameters which characterize the fundamental particles and interactions we find in nature. These are the fundamental physical constants. The precision determination of the numerical values of these constants has long been and remains one of the principal objectives of experimental science. This is not because there is any intrinsic virtue in accumulating lists of ever longer numbers, but because the fundamental constants are the quantitative links between our most basic theories and the physical reality we wish them to describe. Our theories must stand or fall according to their ability to make quantitative predictions which agree with experimental observations to the maximum accuracy possible. The progress of our understanding of the physical world is therefore very much intertwined with the advance of the art of precision measurement and its application to the determination of the fundamental physi cal constants.
