Book Measurement of Transverse Single Spin Asymmetries for Pi0 and Jets at Large XF in Square Root of S

Download or read book Measurement of Transverse Single Spin Asymmetries for Pi0 and Jets at Large XF in Square Root of S written by Yuxi Pan and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asymmetries in the production of final state particles from collider or fixed-target experiments with polarized beams or target could provide valuable information on the spin structure of the nucleon. Transverse and longitudinal spin asymmetry measurements are complementary approaches for probing the nucleon spin structure functions and understanding the QCD dynamics for such phenomena, due to the non-commutative nature of boosts and rotations in relativistic regime. The research presented in this thesis focuses on characterizing the Transverse Single Spin Asymmetries (TSSA) of inclusive pi0 and jet productions in polarized proton collisions at large Feynman (xF) region. Theoretically these observables are explained by means of collinear twist-3 multi-parton correlations. In this picture the asymmetries originate from initial-state twist-3 parton distributions in the polarized proton and/or through the coupling between proton's initial-state transversity distribution and the final-state twist-3 fragmentation functions. The measurement of SSA for forward inclusive pi0 produced in pp collisions up to high transverse momentum helps examine the validity and interplay of these initial- and final-state models. These models can be further explored by investigating the dependence of the TSSA on event topologies. This thesis presents the STAR measurement of TSSA for forward inclusive pi0 at $2.8

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the theory and phenomenology of transverse-spin effects in high-energy hadronic physics. Contrary to common past belief, it is now rather clear that such effects are far from irrelevant. A decade or so of intense theoretical work has shed much light on the subject and brought to surface an entire class of new phenomena, which now await thorough experimental investigation. Over the next few years a number of experiments world-wide (at BNL, CERN, DESY and JLAB) will run with transversely polarised beams and targets, providing data that will enrich our knowledge of the transverse-spin structure of hadrons. It is therefore timely to assess the state of the art, and this is the principal aim of the volume. An outline of the book is as follows. After a few introductory remarks (Chapter 1), attention is directed in Chapter 2 to transversely polarised deeply-inelastic scattering (DIS), which probes the transverse spin structure function g2. This existing data are reviewed and discussed (for completeness, a brief presentation of longitudinally polarised DIS is also provided). In Chapter 3 the transverse-spin structure of the proton is illustrated in detail, with emphasis on the transversity distribution and the twist-three parton distribution contributing to g2. Model calculations of these quantities are also presented. In Chapter 4, the QCD evolution of transversity is studied at leading and next-to-leading order. Chapter 5 illustrates the g2 structure function and its related sum rules within the framework of perturbative QCD. The last three chapters are devoted to the phenomenology of transversity, in the context of Drell-Yan processes (Chapter 6), inclusive leptoproduction (Chapter 7) and inclusive hadroproduction (Chapter 8). The interpretation of some recent single-spin asymmetry data is discussed and the prospects for future measurements are reviewed.

Book Measurement of Single and Double Spin Asymmetries in Deep Inelastic Pion Electroproduction with a Longitudinally Polarized Target

Download or read book Measurement of Single and Double Spin Asymmetries in Deep Inelastic Pion Electroproduction with a Longitudinally Polarized Target written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report the first measurement of the transverse momentum dependence of double spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive production of pions in deep inelastic scattering off the longitudinally polarized proton. Data have been obtained using a polarized electron beam of 5.7 GeV with the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). A significant non-zero $\sin2\phi$ single spin asymmetry was also observed for the first time indicating strong spin-orbit correlations for transversely polarized quarks in the longitudinally polarized proton. The azimuthal modulations of single spin asymmetries have been measured over a wide kinematic range.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spin dependent measurements provide incisive tests for modern theories of particle physics. The discovery that the integral of the quark helicity distribution is much too small to account for the spin of the proton is an excellent case in point. It inspired an intense period of theoretical scrutiny and a new generation of experiments to study [Delta]g, the helicity distribution of gluons in the nucleon. In particular, the unique polarized proton collider at RHIC enables a class of asymmetry measurements that are directly sensitive to gluon polarization. The STAR experiment at RHIC measures the double spin asymmetry A[subscript LL] for a variety of final states in collisions of longitudinally polarized protons in order to constrain [Delta]g. Asymmetries for mid-rapidity charged pion production benefit from large cross sections and the excellent tracking and particle identification capabilities of the STAR Time Projection Chamber. This thesis presents the first measurements of charged pion A[subscript LL] at STAR. The measurements are compared to predictions based on perturbative QCD calculations and from this comparison model-dependent constraints are placed on the integral gluon polarization [Delta]G.

Book Transverse Single spin Asymmetries

Download or read book Transverse Single spin Asymmetries written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, transverse single-spin asymmetries are among the most intriguing observables in hadronic physics. Though such asymmetries were already measured for the first time about four decades ago, their origin is still under debate. Here we consider transverse single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive lepton-nucleon scattering, in nucleon-nucleon scattering, and in inclusive lepton-nucleon scattering. It is argued that, according to recent work, the single-spin asymmetries for those three processes may be simultaneously described in perturbative QCD, where the re-scattering of the active partons plays a crucial role. A comparison of single-spin asymmetries in different reactions can also shed light on the universality of transverse momentum dependent parton correlation functions. In particular, we discuss what existing data may tell us about the predicted process dependence of the Sivers function.

Book Transverse Spin Asymmetries in Neutral Strange Particle Production

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin of the quantum mechanical spin of the proton in terms of its constituents is not yet fully understood. The discovery that the intrinsic spin of quarks contributes only a small fraction of the total proton spin sparked a huge theoretical and experimental effort to understand the origin of the remainder. In particular the transverse spin properties of the proton remain poorly understood. Significant transverse spin asymmetries in the production of hadrons have been observed over many years, and are related to both the transverse polarisation of quarks in a transversely polarised proton and to the spin dependence of orbital motion. These asymmetries are of interest because of perturbative QCD predictions that such asymmetries should be small. Measurements of such asymmetries may yield further insights into the transverse spin structure of the proton. The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) is the world's first polarised proton collider, and has been taking proton data since 2001. Polarised proton collisions at \(\sqrt{s}\) = 200 GeV taken during the 2006 RHIC run have been analysed and the transverse single and double spin asymmetries in the production of the neutral strange particles \(K^0_S\), \(\Lambda\) and \(\overline{\Lambda}\) have been measured in the transverse momentum range 0.5

Book Single Spin Asymmetries in L P transv Pol H X Processes and Transverse Momentum Dependent Factorization

Download or read book Single Spin Asymmetries in L P transv Pol H X Processes and Transverse Momentum Dependent Factorization written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some estimates for the transverse Single Spin Asymmetry, A_N, in the inclusive processes l p(transv. Pol.) --> h X, given in a previous paper, are expanded and compared with new experimental data. The predictions are based on the Sivers distributions and the Collins fragmentation functions which fit the azimuthal asymmetries measured in Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) processes (l p(transv. Pol.) --> l' h X). The factorisation in terms of Transverse Momentum Dependent distribution and fragmentation functions (TMD factorisation) -- i.e., the theoretical framework in which SIDIS azimuthal asymmetries are analysed -- is assumed to hold also for the inclusive process l p --> h X at large P_T. The values of A_N thus obtained agree in sign and shape with the data. Some predictions are given for future experiments.

Book Measurement of Single target Spin Asymmetries in the Electroproduction of Negative Pions in the Semi inclusive Deep Inelastic Reaction N u2191 e e X on a Transversely Polarized 3He Target

This book was released on 2010 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experiment E06010 measured the target single spin asymmetry (SSA) in the semiinclusive deep inelastic (SIDIS) n↑(e,e'?-)X reaction with a transversely polarized 3He target as an e ective neutron target. This is the very rst independent measurement of the neutron SSA, following the measurements at HERMES and COMPASS on the proton and the deuteron. The experiment acquired data in Hall A at Je erson Laboratory with a continuous electron beam of energy 5.9 GeV, probing the valence quark region, with x = 0.13 → 0.41, at Q2 = 1.31 → 3.1 GeV2. The two contributing mechanisms to the measured asymmetry, viz, the Collins effect and the Sivers effect can be realized through the variation of the asymmetry as a function of the Collins and Sivers angles. The neutron Collins and Sivers moments, associated with the azimuthal angular modulations, are extracted from the measured asymmetry for the very first time and are presented in this thesis. The kinematics of this experiment is comparable to the HERMES proton measurement. However, the COMPASS measurements on deuteron and proton are in the low-x region. The results of this experiment are crucial as the first step toward the extraction of quark transversity and Sivers distribution functions in SIDIS. With the existing results on proton and deuteron, these new results on neutron will provide powerful constraints on the transversity and Sivers distributions of both the u and d-quarks in the valence region.

Book TRANSVERSE SPIN AT PHENIX AND FUTURE PLANS

Download or read book TRANSVERSE SPIN AT PHENIX AND FUTURE PLANS written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The PHENIX experiment took data with transversely polarized proton beams in 2001-2002 and measured the transverse single spin asymmetries in inclusive neutral pion and non-identified charge hadrons at midrapidity and (square root) s = 200 GeV. The data near X{sub F} (almost equal to) 0 cover a transverse momentum range from 0.5 to 5.0 GeV/c. The observed asymmetries are consistent with zero with good statistical accuracy. This paper presents the current work in light of earlier measurements at lower energies in this kinematic region and the future plans of the PHENIX detector.

Book Extraction of Jet Properties from Two Particle Azimuthal Correlations in Pp and AuAu Collisions at square Root of S Subscript NN

This book was released on 2004 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two particle azimuthal correlation functions measured in pp and AuAu collisions at [square root of s subscript NN] = 200 GeV at midrapidity with the central arms of the PHENIX detector are analyzed in order to extract the properties of hadronic jets produced in QCD vacuum and highly excited QCD media, like the jet shape parameters j[Subscript T] and k[Subscript T], the jet conditional yields (number of associated hadrons per high p[Subscript T] trigger hadron), and the jet fragmentation function. The analysis of pp data starts with the measurement of the vacuum fragmentation function from which the p[Subscript T] dependence of the mean fragmentation momentum fraction z is extracted. We obtain a constant value of z = 0.74±0.02 for p[Subscript T] above 3 GeV/c. Soft (non-perturbative) parton fragmentation becomes significant below 3 GeV/c and the slope of the fragmentation function is p[Subscript T] dependent in this region. Gaussian fits to jet induced azimuthal correlations are employed to measure the mean jet fragmentation transverse momentum j[Subscript Ty] = 359 ± 11 (stat) ± 6 (syst) MeV/c and the mean partonic transverse momentum k[Subscript Ty] = 964 ± 49 (stat) ± 16 (syst) MeV/c. The analysis of AuAu data is based on azimuthal correlation functions between charged hadrons in the 1.5-3 GeV/c and 3-5 GeV/c p[Subscript T] regions in five classes of collision centrality. The mean jet fragmentation transverse momentum j[Subscript Ty] is centrality independent and consistent with the value in pp data mentioned above. A strong broadening with the centrality of the extracted mean partonic transverse momentum k[Subscript Ty] (multiplied by z[Subscript trigg]) is observed. This is an important finding because hadronic jet quenching through energy loss is expected to be accompanied by a broadening effect. Another important finding is that the jet conditional yields in both the near (delta phi [Difference] 0) and away (delta phi [Difference] pi) regions exhibit a slightly raising trend with centrality. This was also expected to accompany the jet quenching found at higher p[Subscript T] based on simple energy conservation considerations.

Book Measurements of Inclusive W jets Production Rates as a Function of Jet Transverse Momentum in p bar p Collisions at sqrt s

Download or read book Measurements of Inclusive W jets Production Rates as a Function of Jet Transverse Momentum in p bar p Collisions at sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Letter describes measurements of inclusive W(→ e[nu]) + n jet cross sections (n = 1-4), presented as total inclusive cross sections and differentially in the n{sup th} jet transverse momentum. The measurements are made using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.2 fb−1 collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, and achieve considerably smaller uncertainties on W+jets production cross sections than previous measurements. The measurements are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD (pQCD) calculations in the n = 1-3 jet multiplicity bins and to leading order pQCD calculations in the 4-jet bin. The measurements are generally in agreement with pQCD predictions, although certain regions of phase space are identified where the calculations could be improved.

Book An Introduction To Quantum Field Theory

Download or read book An Introduction To Quantum Field Theory written by Michael E. Peskin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 866 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Quantum Field Theory is a textbook intended for the graduate physics course covering relativistic quantum mechanics, quantum electrodynamics, and Feynman diagrams. The authors make these subjects accessible through carefully worked examples illustrating the technical aspects of the subject, and intuitive explanations of what is going on behind the mathematics. After presenting the basics of quantum electrodynamics, the authors discuss the theory of renormalization and its relation to statistical mechanics, and introduce the renormalization group. This discussion sets the stage for a discussion of the physical principles that underlie the fundamental interactions of elementary particle physics and their description by gauge field theories.
