This book was released on 2010 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A B{sub s}° meson can oscillate into its anti-particle, the {bar B}{sub s}° meson, before decaying. CP violation in this system is made possible by the presence of amplitudes from both mixed and unmixed B{sub s}° meson decays. The CP violating phase [beta]s appears in the interference between the decay amplitudes. The quantity sin(2[beta]s) is expected to be small in the standard model. Thus, measuring a large value for sin(2[beta]s) would be an unequivocal sign of new physics participation in the B{sub s}° mixing loop diagram. In this thesis, we present a latest measurement of sin(2[beta]s), using 5.2 fb−1 of data collected at CDF from p{bar p} collisions at a center of mass energy of √s = 1.96 TeV. A time-dependent angular analysis, with the production flavor of the B{sub s}° meson identified with flavor tagging methods, is used to extract sin(2[beta]s) from ≈6500 B{sub s}° → J/[psi][phi] decays. Other parameters of interest, such as the B{sub s}° lifetime and the decay width difference [Delta][Lambda] between the heavy and light B{sub s}° mass eigenstates are determined to high precision. Also, the effect of potential contributions to the final state from B{sub s}° → J/[psi]f0 and B{sub s}° → J/[psi]K+K− decays is considered for the first time. We present 68% and 95% confidence regions in the [beta]s - [Delta][Lambda] plane. The probability that the observed central value is a fluctuation of the data from the standard model expected value of [beta]s is calculated to be 44%. The observed confidence region shows better agreement with the standard model prediction than previous measurements.

Book excerpt: In the 110 pb−1 Run I data sample, using three complementary flavor-tagging algorithms CDF has made a new measurement of the CP-violating asymmetry sin(2[beta])=0.79{sup +0.41}{sub -0.44}, This corresponds to the limit sin(2[beta])>-0.08 at 95% confidence level. Book Measurement of the Cp Violation Parameter Sin 2 Beta

Download or read book Measurement of the Cp Violation Parameter Sin 2 Beta written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a measurement of the time-dependent asymmetry in the rate of[anti B][sub d][sup 0] versus B[sub d][sup 0] decays to J/[psi]K[sub s][sup 0]. In the context of the Standard Model this is interpreted as a measurement of the CP violation parameter sin(2[beta]). A total of 198[+-]17 B[sub d][sup 0]/[anti B][sub d][sup 0] decays were observed in p[anti p] collisions at[radical]s=1.8 TeV by the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The initial B flavor (whether B[sup 0] or[anti B][sup 0]) is determined by a same-side flavor tagging technique. The analysis results in sin(2[beta])=1.8[+-]1.1(stat.)[+-]0.3(syst.). This analysis demonstrates the feasibility of studying CP violation in the B[sup 0]-[anti B][sup 0] system at a hadron collider. By applying the methods used in this analysis, future, higher-statistics experiments should be able to tightly constrain the parameters of the Standard Model.

Book The Measurement of Sin 2 Beta

Download or read book The Measurement of Sin 2 Beta written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first observation in 1964, CP violation remains one of the most elusive aspects of the standard model. The CDF collaboration has reported the first evidence of CP violation in the B system using the world's largest sample of B[yields] J/[psi]K[sub S][sup 0] decays. The direct measurement of sin(2[beta])=0.79[sub -0.44][sup+0.41] (combined statistical and systematic error) agrees with the standard model predictions. New data collected from the B-factories and from the upgraded experiments at the Tevatron should allow a more precise measurement of sin 2[beta] in the near future.

We also present preliminary measurements of the B[sup 0][bar B][sup 0] oscillation frequency and of the lifetimes of charged and neutral B mesons.

Book An Updated Measurement of Sin 2 Beta at CDF

Download or read book An Updated Measurement of Sin 2 Beta at CDF written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report an updated direct measurement of the Standard Model CP violation parameter sin(2[beta]) using the CDF Detector at Fermilab. We use the entire Run-I data sample of 110 pb[sup -1] of proton-antiproton collisions at[radical]s= 1.8 TeV. In this analysis, we have combined three tagging methods: a same-side tag, a soft-lepton tag, and a jet-charge tag, and also added events that have less precise lifetime information because they are not fully contained within the acceptance of the SVX. The signal sample consists of[approx] 400 B[yields] J/[psi] K[sub S][sup 0] events. A maximum likelihood fitting method is used to measure sin(2[beta])= 0.79[sub -0.44][sup+0.41] (stat.+syst.). We calculate a 93% Feldman-Cousins confidence interval of 0
