Book Measurement of the Proton proton to ZZX Cross Section at a Center of Mass Energy of 8 TeV

Download or read book Measurement of the Proton proton to ZZX Cross Section at a Center of Mass Energy of 8 TeV written by Hayes Merritt and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: A measurement of ZZ production in the 4l channel with pp collisions at sqrt(s)=8 TeV using the full 2012 dataset amounting to an integrated luminosity of 20 fb-1 collected by the ATLAS experiment is presented in this paper. An event is selected when exactly four reconstructed, isolated leptons are found in the final state. Each pair of leptons reconstructed to form a Z boson must have opposite sign and same flavor and have an invariant mass between 66 and 116 GeV. The background contribution is determined using a data-driven technique due to limited Monte Carlo statistics. Limits on the f_4^gamma, f_4^Z,f_5^gamma, f_5^Z anomalous triple gauge couplings are also presented.

Book excerpt: The Standard Model (SM), actual fundamental theory for particle physics, provides a description of the elementary particles and the fundamental interactions: the electromagnetic, weak and strong forces. At the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), physicists and engineers from all over the world are searching to understand the fundamental laws of the universe. It is at CERN that the world's largest and most sophisticated experimental instruments have been built, to accelerate particles at the energy of 3.5-4 TeV with the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS (ATLAS), one of the four main detectors at LHC. In ATLAS, di-boson production is one of the most important electro-weak processes. The electro-weak sector of the SM, as well as the strong interactions, can be tested through the precision measurements of the W+W− production cross section. A measurement of the W+W− production cross section in 8 TeV center of mass proton-proton collisions is presented here from data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC for a total integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb−1. The W+W− events are selected with 3 final states: ee, eμ, and μμ. In order to suppress the background contamination, mainly from the Drell-Yan and ttbar processes, a cut on missing transverse energy is applied and events with hadronic jets satisfying appropriate selection criteria are rejected. The major backgrounds, mainly including W +jets, top and Z+jets, are estimated by data driven technique. The measured cross section is 71.0+1⋅1−1⋅1(stat)+5⋅7−5⋅0(syst)+2⋅1−2⋅0(lumi) pb, which is consistent with SM Next-to-Next-Leading-Order prediction of 63.2+2⋅0−1⋅8 pb.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A measurement of the cross section for upsilon(1S) production in proton-proton collisions at center of mass energy 7 TeV is presented. The measurement uses the upsilon(1S) 2!mu + mu decay mode and covers up to a transverse momentum of 26 GeV in two bins of rapidity; upsilon(1S) upsilon(1S) -1, collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Templates derived from data are used to model the continuum background. In order to eliminate theoretical uncertainties due to the unknown polarization, the measurement is restricted to the case where both muons have a transverse momentum of p mu T> 4 GeV and a pseudorapidit

Book Measurement of the ZZ Production Cross Section in pp Collisions at sqrt s

Download or read book Measurement of the ZZ Production Cross Section in pp Collisions at sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ZZ production cross section in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV center-of-mass energy is measured using 3.2 fb–1 of data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The considered Z boson candidates decay to an electron or muon pair of mass 66–116 GeV. The cross section is measured in a fiducial phase space reflecting the detector acceptance. It is also extrapolated to a total phase space for Z bosons in the same mass range and of all decay modes, giving 16.7+2.2–2.0(stat)+0.9–0.7(syst)+1.0–0.7(lumi) pb. Lastly, the results agree with standard model predictions.

Book Measurements of the ZZ Production Cross Sections in the 2 ell2 nu Channel in Proton proton Collisions at sqrt s

Download or read book Measurements of the ZZ Production Cross Sections in the 2 ell2 nu Channel in Proton proton Collisions at sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of the ZZ production cross sections in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV are presented. We found that candidate events for the leptonic decay mode ZZ 2!2l2[nu], where l denotes an electron or a muon, are reconstructed and selected from data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.1 (19.6)fb-1 at 7 (8) TeV collected with the CMS experiment. The measured cross sections, [sigma](pp 2!ZZ)=5.1+1.5-1.4(stat)+1.4-1.1(syst)"0.1(lumi)pb at 7 TeV, and 7.2+0.8-0.8(stat)+1.9-1.5(syst)"0.2(lumi)pb at 8 TeV, are in good agreement with the standard model predictions with next-to-leading-order accuracy. Furthermore, the selected data are analyzed to search for anomalous triple gauge couplings involving the ZZ final state. In the absence of any deviation from the standard model predictions, limits are set on the relevant parameters. As a result, these limits are then combined with the previously published CMS results for ZZ in 4l final states, yielding the most stringent constraints on the anomalous couplings.

Kalavase and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first measurement of the cross section for top-quark pair production in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider at center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV has been performed using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 pb-1 recorded by the CMS detector. This result utilizes the final state with two isolated, highly energetic charged leptons, large missing transverse energy, and two or more jets. Backgrounds from Drell-Yan and non-W/Z boson production are estimated from data. Eleven events are observed in the data with 2.1+/-1.0 events expected from background. The measured cross section is 194+/-72 (statistical) +/-24 (systematic) +/-21 (luminosity) pb. The result is consistent with next-to-leading order theoretical predictions.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inclusive cross section for top quark pair production is measured in proton-proton collisions at √s = 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to 5.0 and 19.7 fb-1, respectively, with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The cross sections are measured in the electron-muon channel using a binned likelihood fit to multi-differential final state distributions related to identified b quark jets and other jets in the event. The measured cross section values are 173.6 ± 2.1 (stat)+4.5-4.0 (syst) ± 3.8 (lumi) pb at √s = 7 TeV, and 244.9 ± 1.4 (stat)+6.3-5.5 (syst) ± 6.4 (lumi) pb at √s = 8 TeV, in good agreement with QCD calculations at next-to-next-to-leading-order accuracy. The ratio of the cross sections measured at 7 and 8 TeV is determined, as well as cross sections in the fiducial regions defined by the acceptance requirements on the two charged leptons in the final state. The cross section results are used to determine the top quark pole mass via the dependence of the theoretically predicted cross section on the mass, giving a best result of 173.8+1.7-1.8 GeV. Furthermore, the data at √s = 8 TeV are also used to set limits, for two neutralino mass values, on the pair production of supersymmetric top squarks with masses close to the top quark mass.

Download or read book Measurement of the Z tau tau Production Cross section in Proton proton Collisions at square Root Of S written by Justin Griffiths and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first measurement of the inclusive cross-section of the Z boson decaying to two tau leptons was measured with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The data sample in this analysis represents an integrated luminosity of 35 pb ̄1 of proton-proton collisions at a center of mass energy of sqrt(s)=7 TeV. Separate measurements were performed in four decay modes based on how the two tau leptons decay: to hadrons and an electron, to hadrons and a muon, to an electron and a muon, and to two muons. In all four final states, inclusive cross-section measurements were made both in the fiducial region of the ATLAS detector where acceptance is high and in the full phase space, restricted to the mass range of [66, 116] GeV. The measurements from the four individual channels were then combined to yield the combined Z --> [tau] [tau] cross-section of 970 ± 70 (stat.) ± 60 (sys.) ± 30 (lumi.) pb.

Download or read book A Measurement of the Proton proton Inelastic Scattering Cross section at Sqrt s written by Lauren Alexandra Tompkins and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first measurement of the inelastic cross-section for proton-proton collisions at a center of mass energy of 7 TeV using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is presented. From a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20 inverse microbarns, events are selected by requiring activity in scintillation counters mounted in the forward region of the ATLAS detector. An inelastic cross-section of 60.1 +/- 2.1 millibarns is measured for the subset of events visible to the scintillation counters. The uncertainty includes the statistical and systematic uncertainty on the measurement. The visible events satisfy [xi]> 5\times 10-6, where [xi]=MX2/s is calculated from the invariant mass, MX, of hadrons selected using the largest rapidity gap in the event. For diffractive events this corresponds to requiring at least one of the dissociation masses to be larger than 15.7~GeV. Using an extrapolation dependent on the model for the differential diffractive mass distribution, an inelastic cross-section of 69.1 +/- 2.4 (exp) +/- 6.9 (extr) millibarns is determined, where (exp) indicates the experimental uncertainties and (extr) indicates the uncertainty due to the extrapolation from the limited [xi]-range to the full inelastic cross-section.
