Book excerpt: The authors report on a measurement of the longitudinal polarization fraction in the decay B[sup 0][yields] J/[psi]K*[sup 0] using data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. B[sup 0] mesons are reconstructed through the decay chain B[sup 0][yields] J/[psi] K*[sup 0], J/[psi][yields][mu][sup+][mu][sup[minus]], K*[sup 0][yields] K[sup+][pi][sup[minus]]. A sample of 65[+-] 10 events is used to obtain the result[Lambda][sub L]/[Lambda]= 0.65[+-] 0.10 (stat)[+-] 0.04 (sys). The first measurement of[Lambda][sub L]/[Lambda] in the decay B[sub s][sup 0][yields] J/[psi][phi] is also presented.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this analysis is the simultaneous measurement of the branching fraction, the longitudinal-polarization component, and the direct-CP-violating charge asymmetry for the B --> vector-vector decay mode B[sup +] --> K*[sup 0][rho][sup +], which has previously not been seen experimentally. The measurement of the polarization of the penguin decay is of special interest. There is no tree contribution to the decay amplitude and only a very small annihilation process. The polarization of the B[sup +] --> K*[sup 0][rho][sup +] decay mode can be compared to that already measured for the similar penguin decay B --> K*[phi].

The data sample consists of 198 [+-] 17 B[sup 0]/[anti B][sup 0] decays collected by the CDF detector in p[anti p] collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron, where the initial b flavor has been determined by a same-side flavor tagging technique. This asymmetry is interpreted in the Standard Model as a measurement of the CP-violation parameter sin(2[beta]). Our analysis results in sin(2[beta]) = 1:8 [+-] 1:1(stat) [+-] 0:3(syst).

They measure a P-wave fraction R[perpendicular]= (16.0[+-] 3.2[+-] 1.4)% and a longitudinal polarization fraction (59.7[+-] 2.8[+-] 2.4)%. The measurement of a relative phase that is neither 0 nor[pi], [psi][parallel]= 2.50[+-] 0.20[+-] 0.08 radians, favors a departure from the factorization hypothesis. Although the decay B[yields] J/[psi] K[pi] proceeds mainly via K*(892), there is also evidence for K*[sub 2](1430) and K[pi] S-wave contributions.

They search for the h[sub c] narrow state in the decay B[sup -] [yields] h[sub c] K[sup -], h[sub c] [yields] J/[psi][pi][sup +][pi][sup -] and for the decay B[sup -] [yields] J/[psi]D[sup 0][pi][sup -], with D[sup 0] [yields] K[sup -][pi][sup +]. They set the 90% C.L. limits [Beta](B[sup -] [yields] h[sub c]K[sup -]) x [Beta](h[sub c] [yields] J/[psi][pi][sup +][pi][sup -])

They measure the branching fractions (6.1 ± 1.6 ± 1.1) x 10−6 and (8.4 ± 1.9 {+-} 0.9) x 10−6 and the fractions of longitudinal polarization 0.46{sub -0.13-0.07}{sup +0.12+0.03} and 0.80{sub -0.10}{sup +0.09} {+-} 0.03, respectively. They also report on the B{sup {+-}} → [psi]K*0(1430){sup {+-}} decay branching fraction of (7.0 {+-} 1.3 {+-} 0.9) x 10−6 and several parameters sensitive to CP violation and interference in the above three decays. Upper limits are placed on the B{sup {+-}} decay rates to final states with [psi] and K1(1400){sup {+-}}, K*(1410){sup {+-}}, K2(1770){sup {+-}}, or K2(1820){sup {+-}}. Understanding the observed polarization pattern requires amplitude contributions from an uncertain source.
