Book excerpt: The B{sub s} meson is an interesting particle to study because a sizable mixing induced CP violation in the B{sub s} -- {bar B}{sub s} system would be an indication for physics beyond the Standard Model. In this paper we present a measurement of the lifetime difference [Delta][Gamma] between the B{sub s} mass eigenstates and the CP violating phase in the decay B{sub s} → J/[psi][phi]. In 1.7 fb−1 of data collected with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron p{bar p} collider we measure [Delta][Gamma] = 0.076{sup +0.059}{sub -0.063} (stat.) ±0.006 (syst.) ps−1, well consistent with the Standard Model prediction, and a mean B{sub s} lifetime of c{sub tau}{sub s} = 456 ± 13 (stat.) ± (syst.) [mu]m. We find no evidence for CP violation.

Book excerpt: Over the past decades the current theoretical description, the Standard Model of elementary particle physics, was solidified by many measurements as the basic theory describing fundamental particles and their interactions. It is extremely successful in explaining the high-precision data collected by experiments so far. The Standard Model includes several intrinsic parameters which have to be measured in experiments. Independent analyses of different physical processes can constrain those parameters. By combining those measurements physicists might be sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model. If they are inconsistent it allows to get a hint on the theory that might supersede the Standard Model. The goal of the analysis presented in this thesis is to measure some of these parameters in the B{sub s} meson system. The B{sub s} meson, consisting of an anti-b and s quark, is not a pure mass eigenstate, thus allowing a B{sub s} meson to oscillate into its antiparticle via weak interacting processes. This is a general feature of any neutral meson. The history of meson mixing measurements is more then 50 years old. It was first observed in the kaon system. The oscillation in the B{sub d} system was measured very precisely by the B factories, whereas the oscillation frequency of the B{sub s} was measured with more than 5[sigma] significance last year by CDF and first evidence for mixing in the D0 system was presented only this year.

Book Measurement of the CP Violating Phase Beta s in B s J psi Phi Decays

Download or read book Measurement of the CP Violating Phase Beta s in B s J psi Phi Decays written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CP violating phase [beta] j/[Psi][Phi]s is measured in decays of B0s → J/[Psi][Phi]. This measurement uses 5.2 fb-1 of data collected in √s = 1.96 TeV p$\bar{p}$ collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron with the CDF Run-II detector. CP violation in the Bs0-$\bar{B}$s0 system is predicted to be very small in the Standard Model. However, several theories beyond the Standard Model allow enhancements to this quantity by heavier, New Physics particles entering second order weak mixing box diagrams. Previous measurements have hinted at a deviation from the Standard Model expectation value for [beta]sJ/[Psi][Phi] with a significance of approximately 2[sigma]. The measurement described in this thesis uses the highest statistics sample available to date in the Bs0 → J/[Psi][Phi] decay channel, where J/[Psi] → [mu]+[mu]- and [Phi] → K+K-. Furthermore, it contains several improvements over previous analyses, such as enhanced signal selection, fully calibrated particle ID and flavour tagging, and the inclusion of an additional decay component in the likelihood function. The added decay component considers S-wave states of KK pairs in the Bs0 → J/[Psi] K+K- channel. The results are presented as 2-dimensional frequentist confidence regions for [beta]sJ/[Psi][Phi] and [Delta][Gamma] (the width difference between the Bs0 mass eigenstates), and as a confidence interval for [beta]sJ/[Psi][Phi] of [0.02,0.52] U [1.08, 1.55] at the 68% confidence level. The measurement of the CP violating phase obtained in this thesis is complemented by the world's most precise measurement of the lifetime [tau]s = 1.53 ± 0.025 (stat.) ± 0.012 (syst.) ps and decay width difference [Delta][Gamma] = 0.075 ± 0.035 (stat.) ± 0.01 (syst.) ps-1 of the Bs0 meson, with the assumption of no CP violation.

Book Measurement of Lifetime and Decay Width Difference in B0s J psi Phi Decays

Download or read book Measurement of Lifetime and Decay Width Difference in B0s J psi Phi Decays written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors measure the mean lifetime, [tau] = 2/([Lambda]{sub L} + [Lambda]{sub H}), and the decay-width difference, [Delta][Lambda] = [Lambda]{sub L} - [Lambda]{sub H}, of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the B{sub s}° meson, B{sub sL}° and B{sub sH}°, in B{sub s}° → J/[psi][phi] decays using 1.7 fb−1 of data collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p{bar p} collider. Assuming CP conservation, a good approximation for the B{sub s}° system in the standard model, they obtain [Delta][Lambda] = 0.076{sub -0.063}{sup +0.059}(stat.) ± 0.006(syst.) ps−1 and [tau] = 1.52 ± 0.04(stat.) ± 0.02(syst.) ps, the most precise measurements to date. The constraints on the weak phase and [Delta][Lambda] are consistent with CP conservation.

Book Measurement of the CP Violating Phase Beta s in B0s J Psi Phi Decays with the CDF II Detector

Download or read book Measurement of the CP Violating Phase Beta s in B0s J Psi Phi Decays with the CDF II Detector written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a measurement of the \CP-violating parameter \betas using approximately 6500 $\BsJpsiPhi$ decays reconstructed with the CDF\, II detector in a sample of $p\bar p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV corresponding to 5.2 fb${̂-1}$ integrated luminosity produced by the Tevatron Collider at Fermilab. We find the \CP-violating phase to be within the range $\betas \in [0.02, 0.52] \cup [1.08, 1.55]$ at 68% confidence level where the coverage property of the quoted interval is guaranteed using a frequentist statistical analysis. This result is in agreement with the standard model expectation at the level of about one Gaussian standard deviation. We consider the inclusion of a potential $S$-wave contribution to the $\Bs\to J/\psi K+̂K-̂$ final state which is found to be negligible over the mass interval $1.009

Download or read book Measurement of CP Violation in B s 0 to J psi phi Decays Using the Full CDF Data Set written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report on the final measurement of the CP-violating $B_s^0$ mixing phase $\beta_s^{J/[psi][phi]}$ in √s = 1.96 TeV proton-antiproton collisions collected with the Collider Detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Using a sample corresponding to 9.6 fb-1 of integrated luminosity, we fit the decay-time evolution of $B_s^0$ → J/[psi] (→ [mu]+ [mu]-) [phi] (→ K+ K−) decays in which the b-quark content at production and the CP parity of the final state are identified. The interference of decays with and without mixing renders the $B_s^0$ mixing phase observable. The phase is determined to be -0.06

Book CP Violation in Flavor tagged Bs J psi phi Decays

Download or read book CP Violation in Flavor tagged Bs J psi phi Decays written by Khaldoun Makhoul and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation, we present the results of a time-dependent angular analysis of Bs -+ J/,0 decays performed with the use of initial-state flavor tagging. CP violation is observed in this mode through the interference of decay without net mixing and decay with net mixing, that is, Bs -- J/0 and Bs -+ B, -+ J/q0. The time-dependent angular analysis is used to extract the decay widths of the heavy and light B, eigenstates and the difference between these decay widths AF, - FL - FH. Initial-state flavor tagging is used to determine the matter-antimatter content of the B. mesons at production time. We combine flavor tagging with the angular analysis, which statistically determines the contributions of the CP-even and CP- odd components at decay time, to measure the CP-violating phase 0,. The phase 3, is expressed in terms of elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix as s - arg ( -VtsV4/VcsV*b), and is predicted by the Standard Model to be close to zero, O3SM = 0.02. In the measurement of AF, we use a dataset corresponding to 1.7 fb- of luminosity, collected at the CDF experiment from proton-antiproton collisions at a center of mass energy f = 1.96 TeV. In the measurement of Ps, we use a dataset corresponding to 1.3 fb-1 of collected luminosity. We measure AF, = (0.071+0.064 ± 0.007) ps-1 using the time-dependent angular analysis. Combining the angular analysis with flavor-tagging, we find that assuming the Standard Model predictions of p/ and AF, the probability of a deviation as large as the level of the observed data is 33%. We obtain a suite of associated results which are discussed in detail in this dissertation alongside the main results.
