Book Measurement of the Inclusive Cross Sections for Production of W and Z Bosons Decaying to Electronic and Muonic Final States in S

Download or read book Measurement of the Inclusive Cross Sections for Production of W and Z Bosons Decaying to Electronic and Muonic Final States in S written by Alexander Thomas Law and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements are presented of fiducial and total inclusive cross sections for W-plus, W-minus, and Z bosons, decaying to leptonic or muonic final states, in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV center-of-mass energies, using the ATLAS Detector at CERN's Large Hadron Collider. Data used in these measurements correspond to 81 inverse picobarns of integrated luminosity, recorded during June and July 2015. Cross sections are measured in six independent analysis channels, corresponding to the electronic and muonic final states of W-plus, W-minus, and Z bosons. Electron and muon channels are combined to obtain fiducial and total cross-sections-times-leptonic-branching-ratios for each of W-plus, W-minus, and Z. Lepton universality ratios for W and Z are calculated and found to be compatible with Standard Model expectations and global averages. The ratio of W and Z fiducial cross sections is measured. The ratio of W-plus and W-minus fiducial cross sections is measured. All measurements are compared to NNLO(QCD)+NLO(EW) predictions, based on a selection of modern proton parton distribution functions.

Book Measurements of the W and Z Inclusive Cross Sections and Determination of the W Decay Width

Download or read book Measurements of the W and Z Inclusive Cross Sections and Determination of the W Decay Width written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent results on the production of W and Z gauge bosons in p{anti p} collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider from the D0 and CDF experiments are reviewed. Measurements of the inclusive cross sections times leptonic branching ratios in both the electron and muon decay channels are summarized and compared to QCD predictions. Using the ratio R = [sigma]{sub W} · B(W → lv)/[sigma]{sub Z} · B(Z → ll) and assuming standard model couplings, an indirect determination of the W decay width is obtained. By comparing this measured value with the predicted value for the W width, a limit on the deviation from the standard model is obtained.

Book Z Boson Cross Section Measurements and Neutral Higgs Boson Search in the Di muon Channel with the CMS Detector

This book was released on 2019 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, measurements of inclusive and differential Z boson production cross sections in proton-proton collisions at [square root of] s =13 TeV with the CMS detector at Large Hadron Collider are performed with the di-muon channel. The measured total inclusive cross section times branching ratio is or(pp - ZX) x [beta](Z --> [mu][mu]) = 1870 ± 2(stat) ± 35(syst) ± 51(lumi) pb for the di-muon invariant mass in the range of 60 to 120 GeV, which is in good agreement with the next-to-next-to leading order QCD predictions. The spectra of Z boson transverse momentum, ... variable, rapidity, and the muon transverse momentum are also measured and compared with theoretical predictions. The large production cross section of Z boson and good experimental accessibility of final-state muons permit a real-time monitoring of luminosities using the counts of reconstructed Z --> [mu][mu] events. Preliminary results of counting of Z bosons as a luminometer are shown using the entire 2018 data-taking period. A search for beyond Standard Model neutral Higgs bosons decaying to two muons is also presented. No significant excess is observed. A 95% confidence level upper limit is set on ... The exclusion contour is also determined on the parameter phase space in the context of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Mode representative benchmark scenarios.

Book Measurement of the W and Z Cross Sections in the Electron Channel for P Anti p Collisions at S 1 2

Download or read book Measurement of the W and Z Cross Sections in the Electron Channel for P Anti p Collisions at S 1 2 written by John Michael Gardner and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents measurements of the inclusive production cross sections for W and Z gauge bosons decaying through the electron channel with p{bar p} collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The ratio of these cross sections is then used to extract the W total width. The Standard Model (SM) of electroweak and strong interactions is a collection of theories which together encompass what is currently known about the elementary particles that make up matter and the forces through which they interact. Experimentalists are constantly searching for violations of the Standard Model by making precision measurements of predicted interactions. The decay of the W boson is one such interaction. The rate of its decay is reflected in its width which is predicted to high precision using Standard Model-based calculations. Therefore, a high precision experimental width measurement would be very sensitive to any such violation. In principle the W and Z boson production cross sections could also be good Standard Model tests. However, a precise knowledge of integrated luminosity is required which is unfortunately difficult to obtain at the Tevatron. In fact, the W and Z cross section results can be used to obtain a more precise luminosity measurement. The data set consists of a total integrated luminosity of 177 pb{sup -1} collected from September 2002 to September 2003 using the D0 detector at Fermilab.

Book Extraction of the Width of the W Boson from a Measurement of the Ratio of the W and Z Cross Sections

Download or read book Extraction of the Width of the W Boson from a Measurement of the Ratio of the W and Z Cross Sections written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation reports on measurements of inclusive cross sections times branching fractions into electrons for W and Z bosons produced in p{anti p} collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV. From an integrated luminosity of 84.5 pb−1 recorded in 1994--1995 by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron [Lambda] the cross sections are measured to be [sigma]p{anti p} → W + X · B(W → e[nu]) = 2,310 ± 10 (stat) ± 50 (Syst) ± 100 (lum) pb and [sigma](p{anti p} → Z + X) · B(Z → ee) = 221 ± 3 (stat) ± 4 (Syst) ± 10 (lum) pb. The cross section ratio R is determined to be [sigma](p{anti p} → W + X) · B(W → e[nu])/[sigma](p{bar p} → Z + X) · B(Z → ee) = 10.43 ± 0.15 (stat) ± 0.20 (syst) ± 0.10 (NLO)[Lambda] and R is used to determine B(W → e[nu]) = 0.1044 ± 0.0015 (stat) ± 0.0020 (syst) ± 0.0017 (theory) ± 0.0010 (NLO)[Lambda] and [Lambda]{sub W} = 2.169 ± 0.031 (stat) ± 0.042 (syst) ± 0.041 (theory) ± 0.022 (NLO) GeV. The latter is used to set a 95% confidence level upper limit on the partial decay width of the W boson into non-standard model final states [Lambda][Lambda]{sub W}{sup inv}[Lambda] of 0.213 GeV.

Book Measurements of Inclusive W and Z Cross Sections in Pp Collisions at Sqrt s

Download or read book Measurements of Inclusive W and Z Cross Sections in Pp Collisions at Sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of inclusive W and Z boson production cross sections in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV are presented, based on 2.9 inverse picobarns of data recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC. The measurements, performed in the electron and muon decay channels, are combined to give sigma(pp to WX) times B(W to muon or electron + neutrino) = 9.95 \pm 0.07(stat.) \pm 0.28(syst.) \pm 1.09(lumi.) nb and sigma(pp to ZX) times B(Z to oppositely charged muon or electron pairs) = 0.931 \pm 0.026(stat.) \pm 0.023(syst.) \pm 0.102(lumi.) nb. Theoretical predictions, calculated at the next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD using recent parton distribution functions, are in agreement with the measured cross sections. Ratios of cross sections, which incur an experimental systematic uncertainty of less than 4%, are also reported.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis reports on the measurement of the W and Z boson inclusive production cross sections (?{sub W} and?{sub Z}) times electronic branching ratios (Br(W → e?) and Br(Z → ee)) in p{anti p} collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV. The analysis is based on 12.8 pb{sup −1} of data taken in the 1992--1993 run by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider; the cross sections were measured to be:?{sub W} · Br(W → e?) = 2.36 ± 0.02 ± 0.07 ± 0.13 nb and?{sub Z} · Br(Z → ee) = 0.218 ± 0.008 ± 0.008 ± 0.012 nb. The first error is statistical, the second error represents the non-luminosity systematic error, and the third error shows the uncertainty in the luminosity determination. Future prospects for similar measurements based on larger samples of data are discussed.

Luchini and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have measured the production cross sections x decay branching ratios for W + $gamma$ and Z + $gamma$ in the muon channel in $sqrt{s}$ = 1.8 TeV p-p collisions, from 3.54 $pm$ 0.24 $pbsp{-1}$ of muon W and Z data from the CDF 1988-89 Tevatron collider run. For photons in the central region ($vertetavert $ 5.0 GeV and lepton-photon angular separation $Delta Rsb{ellsbgamma} >$ 0.7, 5 $Wsb{gamma}$ candidates and 2 $Zsb{gamma}$ candidates were observed. From these events, the $sigma cdot BR(W + gamma)$ and $sigma cdot BR(Z + gamma)$ cross sections for the muon samples are measured, and compared with Standard Model predictions. We also determined the cross section ratios, $Wsb{gamma}$/W, $Zsb{gamma}$/Z and $Wsb{gamma}/Zsb{gamma}$, which, along with the previous CDF measurement(s) of the W/Z cross section ratio provide new insight on the Standard Model, and are sensitive to anomalous couplings of the W and Z bosons. Using the $Wsb{gamma}$ and $Zsb{gamma}$ absolute cross section measurements, the absence of an excess of hard photons accompanying W and Z boson production enables us to obtain direct limites on anomalous $WWsb{gamma}$, $ZZsb{gamma}$ and $Zsb{gammagamma}$ couplings. For saturation of unitarity, these experimental limits impose constraints on possible internal (composite) structure for the W and Z bosons with compositeness scale sensitivity up to $Lambdasb{W} sim$ 1 TeV and $Lambdasb{Z} sim$ 250-500 GeV, respectively. These compositeness scale limits probe the possible internal structure of the W to ${sim}
