The first uses D[sup 0] [yields] [bar K] [sup [minus]][mu][sup +][nu] for normalization, and yields the result B(D[sup +] [yields] [bar K]*[sup 0] [mu][sup +][nu] = (3.25 [plus minus] 0.71 [plus minus] 0.75)%. From this method we also obtain the direct measurement [Gamma](D[sup +] [yields][bar K]*[sup 0][mu][sup +] [nu]/[Gamma](D[sup 0] [yields] K[sup [minus]] [mu][sup +] [nu]) = 0.43 [plus minus] 0.09 [plus minus] 0.09. The second method uses the mode D[sup +] [yields] K[sup [minus]][pi][sup +] [pi][sup +] for normalization and yields B(D[sup +] [yields] [bar K]*[sup 0] [mu][sup +][nu]) = 4.18 [plus minus] 0.66 [plus minus]0.96)%. Combining the results of the two methods yields B(D[sup +] [yields] [bar K]*[sup 0][mu][sup +][nu]) = 3.57 [plus minus] 0.96)%.

Book excerpt: The authors present a preliminary measurement of R[sub 1], and R[sub 2], and [rho][sup 2], which are the three parameters used to characterize the B [yields] D*[ell][bar [nu]][sub e] form factors (A[sub 1], V, and A[sub 2]). They use 85 x 10[sup 6] B[bar B]-pairs accumulated on the [Upsilon](4S) resonance at PEP-II. In this analysis they use the decay mode [bar B][sup 0] [yields] D[sup +]*e[sup -][bar [nu]] and its charge conjugate. The D*[sup +] is reconstructed in the channel D*[sup +] [yields] D[sup 0][pi][sup +] and the D[sup 0] in the channel D[sup 0] [yields] K[sup -][pi][sup +]. They parameterize the form factors in terms of their ratios (determined by the parameters R[sub 1] and R[sub 2]) and the common slope [rho][sup 2] in the variable w (a quantity related to the momentum transfer in the decay process). These parameters are determined via an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the distributions in four kinematic variables (three decay angles and w). The results are R[sub 1] = 1.328 [+-] 0.055 [+-] 0.025 [+-] 0.025 and R[sub 2] = 0.920 [+-] 0.044 [+-] 0.020 [+-] 0.013 for the ratios and [rho][sup 2] = 0.769 [+-] 0.l039 [+-] 0.019 [+-] 0.032 for the slope. The stated errors are the statistical uncertainty from the data, statistical uncertainty from the size of the Monte Carlo sample and the systematic uncertainty, respectively.

Book excerpt: We report recent results on charmed meson decays, obtained using the Mark III detector at SPEAR. The first topic discussed is the observation of ee− .-->. D/sub s/D/sub s/* at .sqrt.s = 4.14 GeV. The D/sub s/* is detected as a peak in the mass distribution recoiling from D/sub s//sup + -/ .-->. phi.pi./sup + -/. The mass of the D/sub s/* is found to be (2109.3 +- 2.1 +- 3.1)MeV/c2, yielding a D/sub s/*-D/sub s/ mass difference of (137.9 +- 2.1 +- 4.3) MeV/c2. The production cross section times branching ratio is also measured. Next, a search for the decay D .-->. .mu.+nu/sub .mu./ is described. A preliminary upper limit (90% CL) on B(D+ .-->. .mu.+nu/sub .mu./) of 8.4 x 10−4 is obtained, corresponding to an upper limit on the decay constant f/sub D/ of 340 MeV/c2. Finally, we present results of a search for the lepton family number violating decay D° .-->. .mu.e. We find B(D° .-->. .mu.e)

This decay is essentially the decay of a b quark to a c quark inside the meson with the release of a muon and neutrino, and it provides a very clean signal for measuring various B meson decay properties. the data for this measurement consist of 22.3 million B{bar B} pairs collected by the BABAR detector at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in 1999-2000. The branching fraction is measured to be {Beta}({bar B}{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup +}{mu}{sup -}{bar {nu}}{sub {mu}}) = [4.72 {+-} 0.10 (data stat.) {+-} 0.06 (MC stat.) {+-} 0.20 (syst.) {+-} 0.17 (other {Beta})]%.
