Book Measurement of the Angular Correlation Coefficient in Neutron Decay

Download or read book Measurement of the Angular Correlation Coefficient in Neutron Decay written by Peter Weinzierl and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The document is a continuation of the work started under Contract 61(052)-857. The aim is to determine the angular correlation constant, and hence, the coupling constant ratio C sub A/C sub V, in neutron beta decay by measuring the shape of the proton recoil spectrum. Further preliminary investigations were done concerning the effect of neutron motion and finite spectrometer resolution upon the spectrum, on the optimization of the measurement cycle, and on the appearance of surface charges under electron irradiation. The beam tube insert and the vacuum system have been assembled and tested. The magnetic shielding inside the beam tube was tested. The proton test source has been finished. The proton detector has been tested, and it was possible to reduce the background counting rate to a sufficiently low value. The control and data output system has been finished and tested. An evaluation of coupling constants in beta decay using published data was done by means of a computer program. (Author).

Book On the Measurement of the Electron neutrino Correlation in Neutron Beta Decay

Download or read book On the Measurement of the Electron neutrino Correlation in Neutron Beta Decay written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new approach to the measurement of A, the electron-neutrino correlation, in neutron beta decay is presented. A precise measurement of A can lead to a precise determination of G{sub A}/G{sub V}. Coincidences between electrons and protons are detected in a field-expansion spectrometer. Both electrons and protons are detected in segmented Si detectors. The spectrometer configuration has a long, (almost equal to) 1 meter, drift distance for the proton. The electron energy and time of flight between the electron and proton are measured. We show that by sorting the data on proton time of flight and electron energy, A can be determined with a statistical accuracy of (almost equal to) 5.1/(square root)n, where n is the number of decays observed. The approach has a number of advantages. Thin-dead-layer segmented Si detectors are commercially available. There are no material apertures to determine the acceptance of the apparatus. The charged particles interact only with electric and magnetic fields before striking the detectors. Coincident detection of electrons and protons reduces backgrounds, and allows the in situ determination of backgrounds. In the analysis, it is not necessary to sort on the relative electron and proton direction and hence electron back scattering does not cause systematic uncertainties. A time of flight spectrum is obtained for each electron energy. Different parts of the spectra have different sensitivities to A. The parts of the spectra that are insensitive to A can be used to verify the accuracy of the electric and magnetic field determinations.

Book Electron neutrino Angular Correlation Measurement in the Decay of Lithium 8

Download or read book Electron neutrino Angular Correlation Measurement in the Decay of Lithium 8 written by Gang Li and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Standard Model has been very successful in describing existing experimental data in nuclear and particle physics, but it still depends on numerous experiments for the determination of several important properties. For example, the assumption that only Vector(V) and Axial-Vector(A) interactions are present out of five possible types of weak interactions: V, A, Scalar(S), Pseudoscalar(P) and Tensor(T) is based on experimental results. The ion trap is an promising way for precise measurement of the beta-neutrinoangular correlation parameter "a" in beta decay. The unperturbed observation of the recoiled nucleus and electron allows reconstruction of the full decay kinematics. The goal of the BPT (Beta-decay Paul Trap) project is to measure "a" in the decay of 8Li. A deviation from the predicted value a =--1/3 would be an indication of a tensor contribution. 8Li was produced at the Argonne National Laboratory and about 20,000 events were recorded. By measuring the energy shift of the alpha particles in the 8Li decay, "a" is determined to be a =--0.329±0.009. This measurement is consistent with the Standard Model prediction. Upgrade of the system for a higher precision measurement is discussed." --
