The measured two-neutrino double-beta decay half-life of 136Xe is T{sup 2[nu]}{sub 1/2} = 2:38 ± 0:02(stat) ±0.14(syst) x1021 yr, consistent with a recent measurement by EXO-200. We also obtain a lower limit for the neutrinoless double-beta decay half-life, T{sup 0[nu]}{sub 1/2}> 5.7 x 1024 yr at 90% C.L.

Book excerpt: NEMO 3 is a double beta decay experiment situated in the Fréjus tunnel which runs between France and Italy. If neutrinoless double beta decay is observed it will prove the neutrino is a Majorana particle and may potentially become the most sensitive method of measuring the absolute neutrino mass. It would also have huge implications for not only particle physics, but also nuclear physics, astrophysics and cosmology. The study of two-neutrino double beta decay gives us a better understanding of the nuclear models used to calculate the nuclear matrix elements, which are so important in extracting new physics parameters from the neutrinoless double beta decay search. The purpose of this thesis is primarily to report on the measurement of the two neutrino double beta decay of two isotopes, {100}Mo and {48}Ca, currently inside the NEMO 3 detector. The double decay of {100}Mo to the O {+}_{1} excited state of {100}Ru is studied as well as the double beta decay of {48}Ca to the ground state of {48}Ti. The two neutrino half-life measurement for {100}Mo is found to be T {2\upsilon}_{1/2}(O +\rightarrow O {+}_1}) = 5.70 {+1.15}_{-0.82} (stat) \pm 0.77 (syst.) \times 10 {20} yrs. This being the first result where all the final states have been measured. For {48}Ca, the two neutrino half-life is T {2\upsilon}_{1/2}(g.s. \rightarrow g.s.) = 4.44 {+0.49}_{-0.40}(stat.) \pm 0.29 (syst.) \times 10 {19} yrs, which is the worlds most accurate measurement of this decay process. A limit on the neutrinoless double beta decay of {48}Ca has also been obtained.

Book excerpt: Fireman(1) has reported the results of a rather difficult beta-particle coincidence counting experiment in which the decay of Sn124 by the simultaneous emission of two negative beta-particles, with a half-life between 0.4 x 1016 years and 0.9 x 1016 years, seems to have been observed. This note reports the results obtained from a different and somewhat simpler method of looking for the phenomenon of simultaneous emission of two beta-particles. These results are negative so far and show that this process is considerably less probable in the case chosen by us than in that reported by Fireman. The method consists of looking in uranium samples for 90-year Pu238 which would come from U238 by the double beta-particle mechanism since Np238 is heavier than U238, which in turn is substantially heavier than Pu238, in the isobaric triplet 92U238-93Np238-94Pu238. This chemical method of investigation is particularly applicable to this isobaric triplet because there appears to be no other mechanisms to account for the Pu238 should it be found. The energetics of the situation are summarized in the following diagram, where the disintegration energies are derived from sources which may be traced through a recent compilation.

The first experiment, known as EXO-200, will utilize 200 kg of xenon enriched to 80% in the isotope of interest, making it the largest double beta decay experiment to date by one order of magnitude. This experiment is rapidly being constructed, and will begin data taking in 2007. The EXO collaboration is also developing a technique to identify on an event-by-event basis the daughter barium ion of the double beta decay. If successful, this method would eliminate all conventional radioactive backgrounds to the decay, resulting in an ideal experiment. We summarize here the current status of EXO-200 construction and the barium tag R & D program.
