Download or read book Rethinking the Irish Diaspora written by Johanne Devlin Trew and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides scholarly perspectives on a range of timely concerns in Irish diaspora studies. It offers a focal point for fresh interchanges and theoretical insights on questions of identity, Irishness, historiography and the academy’s role in all of these. In doing so, it chimes with the significant public debates on Irish and Irish emigrant identities that have emerged from Ireland’s The Gathering initiative (2013) and that continue to reverberate throughout the Decade of Centenaries (2012-2023) in Ireland, North and South. In ten chapters of new research on key areas of concern in this field, the book sustains a conversation centred on three core questions: what is diaspora in the Irish context and who does it include/exclude? What is the view of Ireland and Northern Ireland from the diaspora? How can new perspectives in the academy engage with a more rigorous and probing theorisation of these concerns? This thought-provoking work will appeal to students and scholars of history, geography, literature, sociology, tourism studies and Irish studies.

Download or read book Post socialist Informalities written by Abel Polese and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-19 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive collection of key scholarship on informality from the whole post-socialist region. From Bosnia to Central Asia, passing through Russia and Azerbaijan, the contributions to this volume illustrate the multi-faceted and complex nature of informality, while demonstrating the growing scholarly and policy debates that have developed around the understanding of informality. In contrast to approaches which tend to classify informality as ‘bad’ or ‘transitional’ – meaning that modernity will make it disappear – this edited volume concentrates on dynamics and mechanisms to understand and explain informality, while also debating its relationship with the market and society. The authors seek to explain informality beyond a mere monetaristic/economistic approach, rediscovering its interconnection with social phenomena to propose a more holistic interpretation of the meaning of informality and its influence in various spheres of life. They do this by exploring the evolving role of informal practices in the post-socialist region, and by focusing on informality as a social organisation determinant but also looking at the way it reshapes emergent social resistance against symbolic and real political order(s). This book was originally published as two special issues, of Caucasus Survey and the Journal of Contemporary Central and Eastern Europe.

Download or read book Planetary Mineralogy written by M.R. Lee and published by The Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland. This book was released on 2015-04-20 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the EMU Notes in Mineralogy is one of the outcomes of a school in planetary mineralogy that was held in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2014. The school was inspired by the recent advances in our understanding of the nature and evolution of our Solar System that have come from the missions to study and sample asteroids and comets, and the very successful Mars orbiters and landers. At the same time our horizons have expanded greatly with the discovery of extrasolar protoplanetary disks, planets and planetary systems by space telescopes. The continued success of such telescopic and robotic exploration requires a supply of highly skilled people and so one of the goals of the Glasgow school was to help build a community of early-career planetary scientists and space engineers.

This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Vector boson scattering is one of the recent remarkable observations at the Large Hadron Collider. The longitudinal polarization modes of the massive vector bosons are strongly tied to the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism. With the Standard Model predicted Higgs boson playing a crucial role in regularizing the scattering amplitude of these longitudinally polarized bosons, vector boson scattering is a pivotal process in experimentally probing the symmetry breaking mechanism. A golden channel for measuring vector boson scattering at the collider is the electroweak production of two $W$ bosons with the same electric charges. Owing to its largest quark- to gluon- induced production ratio among other di-boson combinations, the process was also the first target of the ATLAS vector boson scattering program, with evidence made in 2014 and observation in 2019. This thesis presents the first measurement of the differential cross-section with the ATLAS experiment at $\sqrt{s}=13$\,TeV using 139\,fb$^{-1}$ datasets of proton-proton collisions. The process is studied in the leptonic decay channels of the $W$ bosons, effectively suppressing many Standard Model backgrounds. The process $pp \rightarrow l^{\pm} \nu l^{\pm} \nu jj $ is measured with the final state consisting of two leptons of like charges, two jets, and missing transverse energy. The characteristic vector boson scattering signature of two tagging jets, with a large di-jet invariant mass, separated by large angles, is used to tag electroweak-induced production. A combination of Monte Carlo-based predictions and data-driven approaches is used to estimate the various backgrounds. A statistical model of profile likelihood is used to constrain the background predictions and reduce the uncertainties following which the events are unfolded, and the cross-section is extracted. The fiducial differential cross-sections are measured in the leptonic channel as a function of several kinematic variables and are found to be consistent with the Standard Model predictions within uncertainties. An experimental precision of 10.2\% is achieved for the fiducial cross-section, and the measurement is unprecedented in precision and granularity for the process. The integrated fiducial cross-section is $3.51 \pm 0.27\,\text{(stat)}\,\pm 0.23\,\text{(syst)}\,\text{fb}$ and agrees with the leading order prediction of $2.97^{+0.28}_{-0.24}\,\text{fb} $ simulated by MadGraph+Herwig7 within uncertainties
