Book excerpt: This thesis presents the measurement of prompt diphoton production rate in proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV using the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF II). This process deserves some attention for the following reasons. The H → ?? decay mode is an important channel for the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson searches in the low mass region (MH 130 GeV) at the forth coming LHC. In many models involving physics beyond the SM, cascade decays of heavy new particles generate a ?? signature. Some examples are supersymmetry with a light gravitino, radiative decays to a higgsino-LSP and models with large symmetry groups. The QCD production of prompt photon pairs with large invariant mass is the irreducible background to these searches. The rate is huge and requires to be quantitatively evaluated prior to any of the possible discoveries. In a hadronic collider environment such as LHC, prompt photon signals are contaminated by the production of neutral mesons which decay to multiple collinear photons. The experience of classifying background of neutral meson is very important. The process can be used to test the Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) calculation of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The 4-momentum of particles in the di-photon final state can be precisely determined due to the fine energy resolution of the electromagnetic calorimeters. The imbalance in the transverse momentum of the two photons reflects the transverse motion of the colliding partons. At collider energies, most of the transverse momentum of the incoming partons can be attributed to multiple soft gluon emissions prior to the collision, of which the effect to di-photon production can be resummed by Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) formalism. The Tevatron data can be used to test the resummation formalisms. They have used 207 pbsup-1

Book Measurement of the Cross Section for Prompt Isolated Diphoton Production in p bar p Collisions at sqrt S

Download or read book Measurement of the Cross Section for Prompt Isolated Diphoton Production in p bar p Collisions at sqrt S written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article reports a measurement of the cross section of prompt isolated photon pair production in p{bar p} collisions at a total energy √s = 1.96 TeV using data of 5.36 fb−1 integrated luminosity collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The measured cross section, differential in basic kinematic variables, is compared with three perturbative QCD predictions, a leading order (LO) parton shower calculation and two next-to-leading order (NLO) calculations. The NLO calculations reproduce most aspects of the data. By including photon radiation from quarks before and after hard scattering, the parton shower prediction becomes competitive with the NLO predictions.

Book Measurement of the Inclusive Isolated Prompt Photon Cross Section in p bar p Collisions Using the Full CDF Data Set

Download or read book Measurement of the Inclusive Isolated Prompt Photon Cross Section in p bar p Collisions Using the Full CDF Data Set written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A measurement of the inclusive production cross section of isolated prompt photons in proton-antiproton collisions at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$=1.96TeV is presented. The results are obtained using the full Run II data sample collected with the Collider Detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9.5fb$^{-1}$. The cross section is measured as a function of photon transverse energy, $E_T^{\gamma}$, in the range 30$

Book A Measurement of the Top antitop Production Cross Section in Proton antiproton Collisions at Center of Mass Energy

Download or read book A Measurement of the Top antitop Production Cross Section in Proton antiproton Collisions at Center of Mass Energy written by Ulysses Allen Grundler and published by ProQuest. This book was released on 2008 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I present a measurement of the tt¯ production cross section at s = 1.96 TeV using 2034 pb-1 of CDF Run II data using events with a high transverse momentum electron or muon, three or more jets, and missing transverse energy. The measurement assumes a t → Wb branching fraction of 100 percent. Events consistent with tt¯ decay are found by identifying jets containing heavy-flavor semileptonic decays to muons. The dominant backgrounds are evaluated directly from the data. Based on 248 candidate events and an expected background of 86.8+/-5.6 events, I measure a production cross section of 8.7+/-1.1+0.9-0.8+/-0.6 pb, in agreement with the Standard Model.

Book Measurements of the Top Anti top Production Cross Section at S 1 2

Download or read book Measurements of the Top Anti top Production Cross Section at S 1 2 written by Joseph Francis Kozminski and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first measurement of the top-antitop production cross section in proton-antiproton collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV using 243 pb{sup -1} of data collected with the D0 detector at Fermilab is presented. In this analysis, only the dielectron final state is considered. Five events are observed, and 0.93 background events are expected. The measured cross section, after accounting for the expected branching ratio to the dielectron channel, is {sigma}{sub t{bar t}} = 14.9{sub -7.0}{sup +9.4}(stat){sub -1.8}{sup +2.5}(syst) {+-} 1.0 (lumi) pb, which agrees with the predicted cross section for top quarks with a mass of 175 GeV. In addition, a first-pass at a measurement of the top mass using the neutrino-weighting method is presented. This measurement is also performed in the dielectron channel using the five events observed in the cross section measurement.

Book A Precision Measurement of the Prompt Photon Cross Section in P bar P Collisions at square Root s

Download or read book A Precision Measurement of the Prompt Photon Cross Section in P bar P Collisions at square Root s written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prompt photon cross section measurement from the CDF experiment at the Fermilab p{bar p} Collider is presented Detector and trigger upgrades, as well as six times the integrated luminosity compared with our previous publication, have contributed to a much more precise measurement and extended P{sub T} range. As before, the cross section agrees qualitatively with QCD calculations but has a steeper slope at low P{sub T}.
