Book excerpt: This thesis reports a time dependent measurement of the B°{sub s}-{bar B}°{sub s} oscillation frequency [Delta]m{sub s} using semileptonic decays B°{sub s} → D−{sub s}l+X. We use a data sample of 1 fb−1 of p{bar p} collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider to reconstruct ≈ 61, 500 semileptonic B°{sub s} decays. This analysis of B°{sub s}-{bar B}°{sub s} mixing has a sensitivity of 19.4 ps−1 and shows an evidence of B°{sub s} oscillations at [Delta]m{sub s} ≈17.75 ps−1 with an amplitude significance of ≈2. In combination with the analyses of ≈ 8,700 hadronic B°{sub s} decays at CDF, we have made the first direct observation of time-dependent B°{sub s}-{bar B}°{sub s} flavor oscillations measuring [Delta]m{sub s} = 17.77 {sup +0.09}{sub -0.10} (stat) ± 0.07 (syst) ps−1. The obtained value of [Delta]m{sub s} agrees with the Standard Model expectation. When combined with the world average values for [Delta]m{sub d}, m{sub {bar B}0} and m{sub {bar B}0s}, along with other theoretical input, this result yields the ratio of CKM matrix elements.

Book excerpt: The authors present the first measurement of the B{sub s}°-{bar B}{sub s}° oscillation frequency [Delta]m{sub s}. They use 1 fb−1 of data from p{bar p} collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The sample contains signals of 3600 fully reconstructed hadronic B{sub s} decays and 37,000 partially reconstructed semileptonic B{sub s} decays. They measure the probability as a function of proper decay time that the B{sub s} decays with the same, or opposite, flavor as the flavor at production and they find a signal consistent with B{sub s}°-{bar B}{sub s}° oscillations. The probability that random fluctuations could produce a comparable signal is 0.2%. Under the hypothesis that the signal is due to B{sub s}°-{bar B}{sub s}° oscillations, they measure [Delta]m{sub s} = 17.31{sub -0.18}{sup +0.33}(stat.) ± 0.07(syst.) ps−1 and determine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: B[sup 0][bar B][sup 0] flavor oscillations have been studied in 20.7 fb[sup -1] of e[sup+]e[sup -] annihilation data collected in 1999 and 2000 with the BABAR detector at center-of-mass energies near the[Upsilon](4S) resonance. The event sample consists of one B[sup 0] meson fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode, while the flavor of the recoiling B[sup 0] in the event is determined with a tagging algorithm that exploits the correlation between the flavor of the heavy quark and the charges of its decay products. By fitting the time development of the observed mixed and unmixed final states, the B[sup 0][bar B][sup 0] oscillation frequency, [Delta]m[sub d], is determined to be 0.519[+-] 0.020[+-] 0.016[Dirac-h] ps[sup -1].

This book was released on 2002 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flavor oscillations of neutral B mesons have been studied with e+e- annihilation data collected at center of mass energies near the [gamma](4S) at the PEP-II asymmetric collider with the BABAR detector. One B0 is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay to a flavor eigenstate. The flavor of the other B in the event is determined using an inclusive tagging algorithm which exploits the correlations between the flavor of the b quark and the charges of its decay products. By fitting the decay-time distribution of the observed mixed and unmixed final states, the oscillation frequency, [Delta]md, is determined to be 0.516 +/- 0.016 (stat.) +/- 0.010 (syst.) ps-l.

Book Search for B0 s Oscillations in Semileptonic B Decays

Download or read book Search for B0 s Oscillations in Semileptonic B Decays written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This note describes a search for B{sub s}° oscillations using semileptonic B decays recorded by the CDF detector during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider on about 1 fb−1 of data, as it was in April 2006. Opposite-side and same-side b flavor taggers are used in this analysis. First they measure the B° oscillation frequency and calibrate opposite-side b flavor taggers on a sample of semileptonic B decays. A simultaneous analysis of B° and B decays to lD°, lD+ and lD* final states has been performed. Beginning with tagger calibrations available from earlier analyses on the l + SVT samples, they use the high statistic lD sample to derive scale factors for predicted dilutions of the soft muon, soft electron and jet charge opposite-side taggers. Secondly they reconstruct B{sub s}° → l+D{sub s}−X decays in three different D{sub s}− channels, namely??−, K*° K− and?+?−?−. D mass, lepton-D mass and lifetime parameters for signal and backgrounds are determined with unbinned maximum likelihood fits. They validate their fitter and obtain sensitivity projections with toy Monte Carlo samples. The?m{sub s} sensitivity on the semileptonic sample is 17.3 ps−1. With the combination of the semileptonic and hadronic analyses they observe a signature consistent with B{sub s}° - {bar B}{sup s}° oscillations. The probability that random tags background could fluctuate to mimic such a signature is 0.5%. Under the hypothesis that this is a signal for B{sub s}° - {bar B}{sup s}° oscillations, they measure?m{sub s} = 17.31{sub -0.18}{sup -0.33}(stat.) ± 0.07(syst.) ps−1.

Book excerpt: The authors present a simultaneous measurement of the {bar B}° lifetime [tau](B°) and mixing parameter [Delta]m{sub d}. They use a sample of about 50000 {bar B}° --> D* 1 {anti {nu}}(l) partially reconstructed decays identified with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage ring at SLAC, where the flavor of the other B meson is determined from the charge of another high momentum lepton in the same event. The preliminary results are: tau(B°) = (1.50 ± 0.008(stat.) ± 0.030(syst.)) ps, [Delta]m{sub d} = (0.523 ± 0.004(stat.) ± 0.007(syst.)) p{sup s}( -1).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes the contribution of partially reconstructed hadronic decays in the world's first observation of B$0\atop{s}$-$\bar{B}$$0\atop{s}$ oscillations. The analysis is a core member of a suite of closely related studies whose combined time-dependent measurement of the B$0\atop{s}$-$\bar{B}$$0\atop{s}$ oscillation frequency [Delta]ms is of historic significance. Using a data sample of 1 fb-1 of p$\bar{p}$ collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF-II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, they find signals of 3150 partially reconstructed hadronic Bs decays from the combined decay channels B$0\atop{s}$ → D*$-\atop{s}$ [pi]+ and B$0\atop{s}$ → D$-\atop{s}$ [rho]+ with D$-\atop{s}$ → [Phi][pi]-. These events are analyzed in parallel with 2000 fully reconstructed B$0\atop{s}$ → D$-\atop{s}$ [pi]+ (D$-\atop{s}$ → [Phi][pi]-) decays. The treatment of the data is developed in stages of progressive complexity, using high-statistics samples of hadronic B0and B+ decays to study the attributes of partially reconstructed events. The analysis characterizes the data in mass and proper decay time, noting the potential of the partially reconstructed decays for precise measurement of B branching fractions and lifetimes, but consistently focusing on the effectiveness of the model for the oscillation measurement. They efficiently incorporate the measured quantities of each decay into a maximum likelihood fitting framework, from which they extract amplitude scans and a direct measurement of the oscillation frequency. The features of the amplitude scans are consistent with expected behavior, supporting the correctness of the calibrations for proper time uncertainty and flavor tagging dilution. The likelihood allows for the smooth combination of this analysis with results from other data samples, including 3500 fully reconstructed hadronic Bs events and 61,500 partially reconstructed semileptonic Bs events. The individual analyses show compelling evidence for B$0\atop{s}$-$\bar{B}$$0\atop{s}$ oscillations, and the combination yields a clear signal. The probability that random fluctuations could produce a comparable signature is 8 x 10-8, which exceeds the 5 standard deviations threshold of significance for observation. The discovery threshold would not be achieved without inclusion of the partially reconstructed hadronic decays. They measure [Delta]ms = 17.77 ± 0.10(stat) ± 0.07(syst) ps-1 and extract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We set a preliminary 95% C.L. exclusion on the oscillation frequency of B{sub s}°-{bar B}{sub s}° mixing using a sample of 350,000 hadronic Z° decays collected by the SLD experiment at the SLC during the 1997-98 run. The analyses determine the b-hadron flavor at production by exploiting the large forward-backward asymmetry of polarized Z° 2!b{bar b} decays as well as information from the hemisphere opposite that of the reconstructed B decay. In one analysis, B decay vertices are reconstructed inclusively with a new topological technique, and separation between B{sub s}° and {bar B}{sub s}° decays exploits the B{sub s}° 2!D{sub s}− cascade charge structure. In the other analysis, semileptonic decays are selected and the B decay point is reconstructed by intersecting a lepton track with the trajectory of a topologically reconstructed D meson. The two analyses are combined with a third analysis described elsewhere to exclude the following values of the B{sub s}°-{bar B}{sub s}° mixing oscillation frequency: [Delta]m{sub s}
