A preliminary upper limit is given on the branching fraction for the {phi}(1020){pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}{nu}{sub {tau}} mode. In addition a preliminary measurement of the branching fraction of the {tau}{sup -} {yields} 3h{sup -}2h{sup +} {nu}{sub {tau}} decay (h = {pi}, K) is presented.

Book excerpt: This dissertation measures an inclusive branching fraction of (13.9 +- 2.0/sub -2.4//sup +2.1/)% for the decay tau− .-->. nu/sub tau/.pi.−.pi.° + nh° where h° is a .pi.° or an eta and n greater than or equal to 1. The data sample, obtained with the TPC detector facility at PEP, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 72 pb−1 at 29 GeV center of mass energy. The measured value for this branching fraction is somewhat greater than the theoretical prediction and, taking errors into account, resolves the present difference between the inclusive and the sum of the exclusive tau− branching fractions into one charged prong. In addition, a lower limit of 8.3% (95% CL) is placed on the branching fraction B(tau− .-->. nu/sub tau/.pi.−.pi.°.pi.°).

Using a sample of {tau}{sup -} {yields} {nu}{sub {tau}}K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} events, we examine the resonance structure of the K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} system and obtain the first measurements of branching fractions for {tau}{sup -} {yields} {nu}{sub {tau}}K{sub 1}{sup -}(1270) and {tau}{sup -} {yields} {nu}{sub {tau}}K{sub 1}{sup -}(1400). We also describe a complete set of branching fraction measurements in which all the decays of the {tau}{sup -} lepton are separated into classes defined by the identities of the charged particles and an estimate of the number of neutrals. This is the first such global measurement with decay classes defined by the four possible charged particle species, e, {mu}, {pi}, and K.

We study 3-prong tau decays, using the[eta][yields][gamma][gamma] and[eta][yields] 3[pi][sup 0] decay modes and 1-prong decays with two[pi][sup 0]'s using the[eta][yields][gamma][gamma] channel. The measured branching fractions are[Beta]([tau][sup -][yields][pi][sup -][pi][sup -][pi][sup+][eta][nu][sub[tau]])= (3.4[sub -0.5][sup+0.6][+-] 0.6) x 10[sup -4] and[Beta]([tau][sup -][yields][pi][sup -]2[pi][sup 0][eta][nu][sub[tau]])= (1.4[+-] 0.6[+-] 0.3) x 10[sup -4]. We observe clear evidence for f[sub 1][yields][eta][pi][pi] substructure and measure[Beta]([tau][sup -][yields] f[sub 1][pi][sup -][nu][sub[tau]])= (5.8[sub -1.3][sup+1.4][+-] 1.8) x 10[sup -4]. We have also searched for[eta][prime](958) production and obtain 90% CL upper limits[Beta]([tau][sup -][yields][pi][sup -][eta][prime][nu][sub[tau]])

The tau- -> (3pi)- eta nu_tau, tau^- ->pi- 2pi0 omega nu_tau and tau- -> f_1(1285) pi- nu_tau branching fractions are presented as well as a measurement of the non-resonant component of the tau- -> 3pi- 3pi0 nu_tau decay. In addition this work sets a new limit on the branching fraction of the isospin-forbidden, second-class current decay tau- -> pi- eta'(958) nu_tau.

Also measured is the tau mass, m{sub {tau}} =(1778.2 ± 1.4) MeV. Lepton universality is affirmed by the relative branching fractions ([Beta]{sub {mu}}/[Beta]{sub e} = 0.9777 ± 0.0063 ± 0.0087, [Beta]{sub h}/[Beta]{sub e} = 0.6484 ± 0.0041 ± 0.0060) and the charged-current gauge coupling-constant ratios (g{sub {mu}} = g{sub e} = 1.0026 ± 0.0055, g{sub {tau}}/g{sub {mu}} = 0.9990 ± 0.0098). The tau mass result may be recast as a tau neutrino mass limit, m{sub {nu}{sub {tau}}}
