Book Measurement of Residual Strains Around Coldworked Fastener Holes

Download or read book Measurement of Residual Strains Around Coldworked Fastener Holes written by William N Sharpe (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coldworking a fastener hole by pulling an oversize mandrel through it can improve its fatigue life because of the residual stresses generated around the hole. This report describes an experimental study of the residual strains around the hole and compares the results with existing theories. An industrial coldworking process is studied, and strains are determined close to the hole by measuring the distance between fiducial marks with an X-Y microscope and by the moire method. The strains near the hole are large (on the order of 5-10 percent) and inhomogeneous. None of the theories predict the strains well, though better agreement is obtained for thinner test specimens at positions away from the hole edge.

Book An Experimental Study of Large Compressive Loads Upon Residual Strain Fields and the Interaction Between Surface Strain Fields Created by Coldworking Fastener Holes

Download or read book An Experimental Study of Large Compressive Loads Upon Residual Strain Fields and the Interaction Between Surface Strain Fields Created by Coldworking Fastener Holes written by Gary L. Cloud and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research investigated three related problems, namely: (1) the evaluation of the residual strain redistribution around an initially coldworked fastener hole in a semi-infinite plate subjected to large in-plane compressive loads; (2) the determination of the effects of a near edge of a row of coldworked holes parallel to such an edge, and the possible creation of a strain climate at the straight edge which could lead to stress corrosion problems; and, (3) the interactions of surface strain fields between rivet holes which are being coldworked. The strain distributions were obtained by a moire technique, with the aid of coherent optical processing and digital data reduction. Many useful conclusions about the residual strain fields near coldworked holes were established.

Book Measurement of Residual and Applied Stress Using Neutron Diffraction

Download or read book Measurement of Residual and Applied Stress Using Neutron Diffraction written by M.T. Hutchings and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The accurate, absolute, and non-destructive measurement of residual stress fields within metallic, ceramic, and composite engineering components has been one of the major problems facing engineers for many years, and so the extension of X-ray methods to the use of neutrons represents a major advance. The technique utilizes the unique penetrating power of the neutron into most engineering materials, combined with the sensitivity of diffraction, to measure the separation of lattice planes within grains of polycrystalline engineering materials, thus providing an internal strain gauge. The strain is then converted to stress using calibrated elastic constants. It was just over ten years ago that the initial neutron diffraction measurements of residual stress were carried out, and during the ensuing decade measurements have commenced at most steady state reactors and pulsed sources around the world. So swift has been the development of the field that, in addition to fundamental scientific studies, commercial measurements have been made on industrial components for several years now. The use of neutrons is ideally suited to the determination of triaxial macrostress tensors, macrostress gradients, and microstresses in composites and multiphase alloys as well as deformed, plastically anisotropic metals and alloys. To date, it has been used to investigate welded and heat-treated industrial components, to characterize composites, to study the response of material under applied loads, to calibrate more portable methods such as ultrasonics, and to verify computer modelling calculations of residual and applied stress.

Book Experimental Studies of Coldworked Fastener Holes

Download or read book Experimental Studies of Coldworked Fastener Holes written by William N Sharpe (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the accomplishments of this research and catalogs its resulting papers and reports. When an oversized mandrel is pulled through a hole, the material near the hole edge is coldworked. After the mandrel is removed, the elastic restoring forces of material away from the hole generate compressive stresses at the edge. Subsequent tensile loading must overcome the compressive edge stresses, so a considerable improvement in the ultimate or fatigue loading capability of a structure can be achieved. The research was performed in four phases: Phase I-Measurement of the residual strains around coldworked holes. Phase II-Measurement of the location of the boundary between the elastic and plastic regions around the hole. Phase III-A study of fatigue crack initiation and growth from coldworked and noncoldworked holes. Phase IV-A study, similar to Phase III, of holes that had existing cracks and were then coldworked. Book An Experimental Study of the Interaction of Strain Fields Between Coldworked Fastener Holes

Download or read book An Experimental Study of the Interaction of Strain Fields Between Coldworked Fastener Holes written by Gary L. Cloud and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the experimental study investigating the interaction of the residual surface strain fields caused by the coldworking of fastener holes in the near vicinity of one another. Testing was confined to 7075-T and aluminum alloy, 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) in thickness. Fastener holes were .261 inch (6.6 mm) in diameter and the center-to-center separation between adjacent fasteners was 1.75 and 2.0 diameters. Single-row in-line and double-row fastener patterns were the focus of this study. Consecutive and non-consecutive sequences of pattern coldwork were chosen to model possible field situations. Experimental results indicate a direct relation exists between the degree of interaction between strain fields and the center-to-center separation between adjacent fastener holes. As noted from the measurement of residual diametral expansions, unsymmetric hole edge motions result in unsymmetric strain distributions. Sleeve failure and the coldwork of adjacent fastener holes can lead to unwanted residual tensile strains at a hole edge boundary. (Author).
