Book Measurement of Pion Carbon Cross Sections at DUET and Measurement of Neutrino Oscillation Parameters at the T2K Experiment

Download or read book Measurement of Pion Carbon Cross Sections at DUET and Measurement of Neutrino Oscillation Parameters at the T2K Experiment written by Elder Sebastian Pinzon Guerra and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tokai-to-Kamioka (T2K) experiment is a long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. An intense muon neutrino (or antineutrino) beam is produced at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) by protons hitting a graphite target. The neutrinos are measured 280 m from the target, and again 295 km across Japan using the Super-Kamiokande detector. This allows for the study of the neutrino oscillations in four channels: the electron neutrino and antineutrino appearance, and muon neutrino and antineutrino disappearance. In T2K, neutrinos are observed primarily via charged current quasi-elastic scattering (CCQE) interactions, as well as charged current single pion (CC1) production. The pion is free to interact inside and outside the nucleus primarily via absorption and charge exchange processes. Reducing the uncertainties on these cross sections reduces the systematic uncertainties for neutrino oscillation measurements. The Dual Use Experiment at TRIUMF (DUET) was conducted to address this issue. This thesis describes the recent results from DUET: the most precise measurements of absorption and charge exchange cross sections of pion on carbon for the momentum range of 201.6~295.1 MeV/c. These DUET measurements, along with existing pion-nucleus scattering data for different atomic nuclei, are used to improve the cascade model that simulates pion-nucleus scattering in T2K, and to reduce the associated systematic uncertainties. These improvements are used in a Markov Chain Monte Carlo neutrino oscillation analysis of the T2K Run 1-8 data, corresponding to 14.7x10e20 protons-on-target in neutrino mode and 7.6x10e20 in antineutrino mode. As a result, the most precise measurement of the parameters that govern the neutrino oscillation phenomenon is obtained. In particular, the values indicative of no matter-antimatter asymmetry (CP-conservation) are excluded at the 95.4% (2-sigma) level. This constitutes the world-leading constraint for CP-violation in the leptonic sector.

Book Predicting the T2K Neutrino Flux and Measuring Oscillation Parameters

Download or read book Predicting the T2K Neutrino Flux and Measuring Oscillation Parameters written by Tomislav Vladisavljevic and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-14 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis reports the calculation of neutrino production for the T2K experiment; the most precise a priori estimate of neutrino production that has been achieved for any accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiment to date. The production of intense neutrino beams at accelerator facilities requires exceptional understanding of chains of particle interactions initiated within extended targets. In this thesis, the calculation of neutrino production for T2K has been improved by using measurements of particle production from a T2K replica target, taken by the NA61/SHINE experiment. This enabled the reduction of the neutrino production uncertainty to the level of 5%, which will have a significant impact on neutrino oscillation and interaction measurements by T2K in the coming years. In addition to presenting the revised flux calculation methodology in an accessible format, this thesis also reports a joint T2K measurement of muon neutrino and antineutrino disappearance, and the accompanying electron neutrino and antineutrino appearance, with the updated beam constraint.

Download or read book Relative Cross Section Measurment of Inclusive Charged Current Multiple Pion Production to Inclusive Charged Current from Muon Neutrinos at the Near Detector of the T2K Experiment written by Scott Davis and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tokai-to-Kamiokande (T2K) experiment is an off-axis, long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment based in Japan. One of the largest sources of systematic uncertainty in the oscillation analysis is the uncertainty on neutrino cross sections. In this thesis, we use the [pi]0 detector (P0D) of the T2K Near Detector to measure one cross section of muon neutrinos. The P0D is a scintillator based detector with a precision water target which allows for a measurement with water and without water. In particular, we measured the relative cross section of charged current multiple pion production to inclusive charged current production. The analysis is performed with a multi-variate template fit using two Monte Carlo neutrino generators, NEUT and GENIE. The relative ratio for NEUT(GENIE) is 0.126 ± 0.024+[0.022-0.021] (0.100 ± 0.018 [+0.018-0.017]) for the Water-In configuration and 0.104 ± 0.029 [+0.030-0.035] (0.121 ± 0.021[+0.034-0.036]) for the Water-Out configuration. The prospects for a precision water cross section measurement are also discussed.

Book Measurement of the Charged Current Muon Neutrino Differential Cross Section on Scintillator with Zero Pions in the Final State with the T2K On off axis Near Detectors

Download or read book Measurement of the Charged Current Muon Neutrino Differential Cross Section on Scintillator with Zero Pions in the Final State with the T2K On off axis Near Detectors written by Andrew Bruce Cudd and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tokai to Kamioka (T2K) is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in Japan producing precise measurements of neutrino oscillations and neutrino interactions with nuclear targets. T2K utilizes a muon (anti-)neutrino beam produced at the J-PARC proton accelerator facility which is measured at a suite of near detectors, ND280 and INGRID, and the far detector, Super-Kamiokande. One of the dominant systematic uncertainties for the oscillation analysis is from the uncertainty in neutrino interaction modeling with complex nuclei, which will eventually become the limiting uncertainty for the next generation of neutrino oscillation experiments. Therefore measurements of neutrino cross sections on nuclear targets is essential for understanding how to model these complicated nuclear interactions. This thesis presents a novel neutrino cross section measurement utilizing both of the T2K near detectors, ND280 and INGRID, in a joint statistical fit. Because the T2K near detectors are exposed to neutrinos from the same beamline, the uncertainties in the neutrino flux prediction will be correlated. This fact combined with the different neutrino energy spectra seen at each detector will allow for some separation of flux and cross section effects, and presents an opportunity to study the neutrino cross section as a function of energy using the same neutrino beam. This analysis is the first cross section measurement on T2K to use samples from multiple detectors in the same beamline. This thesis presents a description of the statistical analysis framework, the event selection, the treatment of systematic uncertainties, and the extracted muon neutrino CC0pi double differential cross section in bins of muon kinematics for ND280 and INGRID, including the correlations between the detectors.

Book The First Pion Ar Cross Section Measurement with the LArIAT Experiment

Download or read book The First Pion Ar Cross Section Measurement with the LArIAT Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A complete understanding of neutrinos properties requires a study and a characterization of the interactions of the daughter particles created in a neutrino-nucleus interaction. The Liquid Argon In A Testbeam (LArIAT) experiment is a small-scale liquid argon detector situated in the Fermilab Test Beam Facility. The LArIAT experiment is exposed to a tertiary beam comprised of mostly pions along with a mix of muons, protons, kaons, and electrons. LArIAT's goal is to characterize the response of the LArTPC to known incoming charged particles and measure their interactions in Argon, in order to understand their cross-sections and to help developing and tuning simulations and reconstruction algorithms for LArTPC neutrino experiments. The world's rst measurement of a pion cross-section on an Argon target, made with the LArIAT detector, is presented here.

Book Study of Neutrino Interactions in the Near Detector of T2K

Download or read book Study of Neutrino Interactions in the Near Detector of T2K written by Chiraz Ferchichi and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The T2K experiment studies the properties of neutrinos, particularly neutrino oscillations. It takes place in Japan and uses a muonic neutrino beam produced by the J-PARC accelerator complex, a near detector, ND280 on the J-PARC site in order to characterise the beam, and a far detector, Super-Kamiokande 295 km away in order to measure the neutrino oscillations. The near detector is also used to study the neutrino interactions and the goal of this thesis is the measurement of muonic neutrino deep inelastic scattering cross sections. The thesis first introduces neutrino physics, then the T2K experiment and more particularly the time projection chambers of the near detector, and its data quality checking that I was in charge of. The analysis is based on the T2K data recorded until 2013. The selection of charged current muonic neutrino interactions is then presented, as well as a preliminary study of the selection of charged current muonic neutrino interactions with the production of a neutral pion. A criterion on track multiplicity allows enriching the former sample in interactions corresponding to a neutrino deep inelastic scattering. Finally a fit, first validated on simulated data, allows the extraction of the muonic neutrino deep inelastic scattering cross sections.

Book Measurement of Neutrino and Antineutrino Total Charged Current Cross Sections on Carbon with MINERvA

Download or read book Measurement of Neutrino and Antineutrino Total Charged Current Cross Sections on Carbon with MINERvA written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a measurement of charged-current inclusive cross sections of muon neutrino and antineutrino interaction on carbon, and antineutrino to neutrino cross section ratio, r, in the energy range 2 - 22 GeV, with data collected in the MINERA experiment. The dataset corresponds to an exposure of 3.21020 protons on target (POT) for neutrinos and 1.01020 POT for antineutrinos. Measurement of neutrino and antineutrino charged-current inclusive cross sections provides essential constraints for future long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment at a few GeV energy range. Our measured antineutrino cross section has an uncertainty in the range 6.1% - 10.5% and is the most precise measurement below 6 GeV to date. The measured r has an uncertainty of 5.0% - 7.5%. This is the rst measurement below 6 GeV since Gargamelle in 1970s. The cross sections are measured as a function of neutrino energy by dividing the eciency corrected charged-current sample with extracted uxes. Fluxes are obtained using the low- method, which uses low hadronic energy subsamples of charged-current inclusive sample to extract ux. Measured cross sections show good agreement with the prediction of neutrino interaction models above 7 GeV, and are about 10% below the model below 7 GeV. The measured r agrees with the GENIE model [1] over the whole energy region. The measured cross sections and r are compared with world data.

Book Measurement of the Elastic Cross Section for Positive Pions on Carbon at 142 MeV

Download or read book Measurement of the Elastic Cross Section for Positive Pions on Carbon at 142 MeV written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A measurement of the elastic cross section dsigma/d.cap omega. was made for the reaction .pi./sup +/ + 12C .-->. .pi./sup +/ + 12C with 142 MeV pions at ten angles ranging from 35 to 85° in the laboratory. This experiment was done at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility. A double focusing magnetic spectrometer observed a cylindrical styrofoam target. The resulting momentum spectra were recorded by an array of nineteen totally depleted surface barrier detectors located at the spectrometer's focal plane. The spectra from the styrofoam were composed of peaks representing proton elastic, carbon elastic, carbon inelastic, and carbon quasi-elastic channels. A function made of Gaussians representing the two body channels and a distribution representing the quasi-elastic channel was fit to the data using a nonlinear least squares algorithm. The ratio of the carbon elastic to proton elastic cross sections was calculated from the areas of the corresponding Gaussians and then multiplied by the proton elastic cross section of Bugg et al eliminating several sources of systematic errors such as beam normalization. The differential cross sections were found to have the usual diffraction structure with a forward peak and a minimum near 55°. Finally, the carbon elastic cross sections were compared to similar .pi.− + 12C cross sections of Binon et al using the optical model.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Neutrino-nucleus coherent pion production is a rare neutrino scattering process where the squared four-momentum transferred to the nucleus is small, a lepton and pion are produced in the forward direction, and the nucleus remains in its initial state. This process is an important background in neutrino oscillation experiments. Measurements of coherent pion production are needed to constrain models which are used to predict coherent pion production in oscillation experiments. This thesis reports measurements of vm and -vm charged current coherent pion production on carbon for neutrino energies in the range 2

Book Cross Section Measurements in the Main Injector Particle Production FNAL E907 Experiment at 58 GeV Energy

Download or read book Cross Section Measurements in the Main Injector Particle Production FNAL E907 Experiment at 58 GeV Energy written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cross-sections are presented for 58 GeV [pi], K, and p on a wide range of nuclear targets. These cross-sections are essential for determining the neutrino flux in measurements of neutrino cross-sections and oscillations. The E907 Main Injector Particle Production (MIPP) experiment at Fermilab is a fixed target experiment for measuring hadronic particle production using primary 120 GeV/c protons and secondary [pi], K, and p beams. The particle identification is made by dE/dx in a time projection chamber, and by time-of-flight, differential Cherenkov and ring imaging Cherenkov detectors, which together cover a wide range of momentum from 0.1 GeV/c up to 120 GeV/c. MIPP targets span the periodic table, from hydrogen to uranium, including beryllium and carbon. The MIPP has collected ≈ 0.26 x 106 events of 58 GeV/c secondary particles produced by protons from the main injector striking a carbon target.
