Book Diagnostics for Experimental Thermonuclear Fusion Reactors

Download or read book Diagnostics for Experimental Thermonuclear Fusion Reactors written by Giuseppe Gorini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of proceedings collects the papers presented at the Workshop on Diagnostics for ITER, held at Villa Monastero, Varenna (Italy), from August 28 to September 1, 1995. The Workshop was organised by the International School of Plasma Physics "Piero Caldirola. " Established in 1971, the ISPP has organised over fifty advanced courses and workshops on topics mainly related to plasma physics. In particular, courses and workshops on plasma diagnostics (previously held in 1975, 1978, 1982, 1986, and 1991) can be considered milestones in the history of this institution. Looking back at the proceedings of the previous meetings in Varenna, one can appreciate the rapid progress in the field of plasma diagnostics over the past 20 years. The 1995 workshop was co-organised by the Istituto di Fisica del Plasma of the National Research Council (CNR). In contrast to previous Varenna meetings on diagnostics, which have covered diagnostics in present-day tokamaks and which have had a substantial tutorial component, the 1995 workshop concentrated specifically on the problems and challenges of ITER diagnostics. ITER (the International Thennonuclear Experimental Reactor, a joint venture of Europe, Japan, Russia, and the United States, presently under design) will need to measure a wide range of plasma parameters in order to reach and sustain high levels of fusion power. A list of the measurement requirements together with the parameter ranges, target measurement resolutions, and accuracies provides the starting point for selecting a list of candidate diagnostic systems.

Book Studying High Energy Density Plasmas Using Three dimensional Neutron Spectroscopy

Download or read book Studying High Energy Density Plasmas Using Three dimensional Neutron Spectroscopy written by Owen M. Mannion and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A suite of 3D neutron time of flight (nTOF) detectors was deployed on the 60-beam, 30-kJ, 351-nm OMEGA laser and was used to study a variety of high energy density (HED) inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments. Measurements of the primary deuterium-tritium (DT) and deuterium-deuterium (DD) neutron energy spectrum were made during DT cryogenic and gas-filled capsule laser direct-drive ICF implosion experiments, and the hot-spot plasma velocity, apparent ion temperature, and Gamow shift were inferred. Measurements of the scattered neutron energy spectrum in cryogenic ICF experiments were used to infer the compressed DT fuel layer's temperature, velocity, and areal density. The hot-spot velocity (~uhs), apparent ion temperature (Ti), and areal-density (pR) measurements were used to diagnose mode-one drive asymmetries in laser direct-drive implosions for the first time. Implosions with significant mode-one asymmetries were found to have large hot-spot velocities (>100 km/s) in a direction consistent with the hot-spot elongation observed in x-ray images, measured Ti asymmetry, and pR asymmetry. A novel mode one drive correction technique was developed and successfully used to correct mode-one drive asymmetries. When mode-one drive asymmetries are eliminated, more symmetric hot spots are observed with reduced ~uhs, Ti asymmetry, pR asymmetry, and increased fusion yield. The areal density, mean velocity, and temperature of the dense fuel layer were measured and used to study the residual kinetic energy in the shell. The mean velocity of the dense fuel layer was measured to be ~80 km/s for all implosion designs, while the apparent ion temperature of the dense fuel layer was observed to increase with the implosion velocity from 0.6-2.4 keV. The significant increase in the apparent temperature of the dense fuel layer with implosion velocity suggests an increase in the residual kinetic energy (RKE) of the shell with implosion velocity. These results are shown to be consistent with enhanced levels of shell decompression for high implosion velocity experiments. The Gamow shift and apparent ion temperature measurements were used to study the plasma ion velocity distribution in hydrodynamic and kinetic plasmas. The relationship between the plasma Gamow shift and apparent ion temperature was inconsistent with a Maxwellian plasma model for the most kinetic-like plasmas. The measurements from the kinetic like plasma were consistent with predictions from Vlasov-Fokker-Planck (VPF) simulations, which predict the presence of non-Maxwellian ion velocity distributions in the hot spot at peak neutron production. These data provide the first experimental evidence of non-Maxwellian ion distributions modifying the neutron spectra in ICF experiments."--Pages xv-xvi.

Book Maximum Neutron Yeidls in Experimental Fusion Devices

Download or read book Maximum Neutron Yeidls in Experimental Fusion Devices written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The optimal performances of 12 types of fusion devices are compared with regard to neutron production rate, neutrons per pulse, and fusion energy multiplication, Q/sub p/ (converted to the equivalent value in D-T operation). The record values in all categories are held by the beam-injected tokamak plasma, followed by other beam-target systems. The achieved values of Q/sub p/ for nearly all laboratory plasma fusion devices (magnetically or inertially confined) are found to roughly satisfy a common empirical scaling, Q/sub p/ approx. 10−6E/sub in/32, where E/sub in/ is the energy (in kilojoules) injected into the plasma during one or two energy confinement times, or the total energy delivered to the target for inertially confined systems. Fusion energy break-even (Q/sub p/ = 1) in any system apparently requires E/sub in/ approx. 10,000 kJ.

  • Author : Yican Wu
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2017-08-16
  • ISBN : 981105469X
  • Pages : 402 pages

Download or read book Fusion Neutronics written by Yican Wu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-16 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a systematic and comprehensive introduction to fusion neutronics, covering all key topics from the fundamental theories and methodologies, as well as a wide range of fusion system designs and experiments. It is the first-ever book focusing on the subject of fusion neutronics research. Compared with other nuclear devices such as fission reactors and accelerators, fusion systems are normally characterized by their complex geometry and nuclear physics, which entail new challenges for neutronics such as complicated modeling, deep penetration, low simulation efficiency, multi-physics coupling, etc. The book focuses on the neutronic characteristics of fusion systems and introduces a series of theories and methodologies that were developed to address the challenges of fusion neutronics. Further, it introduces readers to the unique principles and procedures of neutronics design, experimental methodologies and methodologies for fusion systems. The book not only highlights the latest advances and trends in the field, but also draws on the experiences and skills collected in the author’s more than 40 years of research. To make it more accessible and enhance its practical value, various representative examples are included to illustrate the application and efficiency of the methods, designs and experimental techniques discussed.
