Book excerpt: While the measurement of sin2[beta] is now a precision measurement, the constraints on the other two angles of the Unitarity Triangle, [alpha] and [gamma], are still limited by statistics and/or by theoretical uncertainties. This paper reports on the measurement of CP-violating asymmetries in B[sup 0] --> D(*)[sup [+-]][pi][sub [-+]] and B[sup 0] --> D[sup [+-]][rho][sup [-+]] decays in [Upsilon](4S) --> B[bar B] decays, asymmetries which are rleated to sin(2[beta] + [gamma]). This analysis updates the results already published by including a new decay mode (B[sup 0] --> D[sup [+-]][rho][sup [-+]]) and a larger data sample (110 instead of 88 million [Upsilon](4S) --> B[bar B] decays).

Book excerpt: We present updated results on time-dependent CP asymmetries in fully reconstructed B° → D{sup (*)±}[pi]{sup {-+}} and B° → D{sup ±}[rho]{sup {-+}} decays in approximately 232 million [Upsilon](4S) → B{bar B} events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at SLAC. Using other measurements and theoretical assumptions, we interpret the results in terms of the angles of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity triangle and find

This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents a measurement of the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in the neutral B-meson system performed with data collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The data sample used consists of 29.7 fb[sup -1] collected at the[Upsilon](4S) resonance and 3.9 fb[sup -1] collected off-resonance. We analyze three samples of fully-reconstructed B-meson decays: a sample of decays to CP eigenstates in the modes J/[psi] K[sub s][sup 0], [psi](2S) K[sub s][sup 0], [chi][sub cl] K[sub s][sup 0], and J/[psi] K*[sup 0] (822 events); as well as both charged (14304 events) and neutral (10457 events) B decays to flavor-eigenstates including D[sup (*)] and[pi]/[rho]/[alpha][sub 1]. In all cases, the proper decay time difference between the reconstructed B-meson and the recoiling B-meson is determined by measuring the separation of the two decay vertices. Furthermore, the flavor of the recoiling B-meson is tagged using a neural network algorithm. We use the flavor-eigenstate samples to calibrate both the vertexing and tagging performance. We measure the amplitude of the CP asymmetry, sin2[beta]= 0.61[+-] 0.14(stat)[+-] 0.06(syst). These results indicate the existence of indirect CP violation in the B-meson system.

Book Time Dependent CP Violation Measurements

Download or read book Time Dependent CP Violation Measurements written by Markus Röhrken and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a high-quality, high-precision method for the data analysis of an interesting elementary particle reaction. The data was collected at the Japanese B-meson factory KEKB with the Belle detector, one of the most successful large-scale experiments worldwide. CP violation is a subtle quantum effect that makes the world look different when simultaneously left and right and matter and antimatter are exchanged. This being a prerequisite for our own world to have developed from the big bang, there are only a few experimental indications of such effects, and their detection requires very intricate techniques. The discovery of CP violation in B meson decays garnered Kobayashi and Maskawa, who had predicted these findings as early as 1973, the 2008 Nobel prize in physics. This thesis describes in great detail what are by far the best measurements of branching ratios and CP violation parameters in two special reactions with two charm mesons in the final state. It presents an in-depth but accessible overview of the theory, phenomenology, experimental setup, data collection, Monte Carlo simulations, (blind) statistical data analysis, and systematic uncertainty studies.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents two analyses performed on data collected with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II e{sup +}e{sup -} asymmetric-energy B Factory. First, a Dalitz analysis is shown that performs the first measurement of CP violation parameters in the decay B{sup -} {yields} D{sub {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}}K{sup -} using the decay rate asymmetry and D{sup 0} - {bar D}{sup 0} interference. The results can be used to further constrain the value of the CKM angle {gamma}. The second analysis studies the properties of the X(3872) in neutral and charged B {yields} J/{psi}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}K decays. Measurements of the branching ratio and mass are presented as well as the search for additional resonances at higher masses.

This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present results for a time-dependent Dalitz plot measurement of CP-violating asymmetries in the mode B^0 --> pi^+ pi^- pi^0, dominated by B^0 --> rho^\pm pi^\mp (rho^\pm --> pi^\pm pi^0) decays. Our dataset is derived from the complete sample of 471 x 10^6 B-Bbar meson pairs collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, operating on the Upsilon(4S) resonance. We extract parameters describing the time-dependent B^0 --> rho pi decay probabilities and CP asymmetries, including C, DeltaC, S, and DeltaS, finding these measurements to be consistent with the results of previous analyses. Additionally, we present a two-dimensional likelihood scan of the direct CP-violation asymmetry parameters for B^0 --> rho^\pm pi^\mp decays, finding the results to be consistent with direct CP violation at ~ 2 sigma significance. Finally, we present information on the CP-violating parameter alpha, corresponding to an angle in the unitarity triangle associated with the CKM quark-mixing matrix. We perform a likelihood scan of alpha that incorporates constraints from B^\pm --> rho pi measurements by means of isospin relationships. A robustness study assessing the reliability with which alpha is extracted provides important insights into the interpretation of this result.

Book Measurement of CP Violation Parameters in B Quark Decays to Charm Anticharm Down Quarks Exclusive Decays at the BABAR Experiment

Download or read book Measurement of CP Violation Parameters in B Quark Decays to Charm Anticharm Down Quarks Exclusive Decays at the BABAR Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The BABAR experiment at SLAC provides an opportunity for measurement of CP violation in B decays. A measurement of time-dependent CP violating asymmetries using exclusive B meson decays where the b quark decays to c[bar c]d (including B[sup 0][yields] D*[sup+]D*[sup -] and B[sup 0][yields] D*[sup[+-]]D[sup[-+]] decays) is presented here. This is the first measurement of CP violation in a mode sensitive to the Unitarity Triangle parameter sin2[beta] outside of decays containing charmonium. It provides a comparison to measurements of sin2[beta] using b[yields] c[bar c]s, and permits an observation into potential new physics sources of CP violation, such as supersymmetry, via differences between these measurements and those of B[sup 0][yields] J/[psi] K[sub S][sup 0] as statistics of reconstructed neutral B decays to D[sup (*)+] D[sup (*)-] increase. The measured value of the time-dependent CP violating asymmetries are: S= 0.38[+-] 0.88(stat)[+-] 0.12(syst) and C= -0.30[+-] 0.50(stat)[+-] 0.13(syst) for B[sup 0][yields] D*[sup -] D[sup+]; S= -0.43[+-] 1.41(stat)[+-] 0.23(syst) and C= 0.53[+-] 0.74(stat)[+-] 0.15(syst) for B[sup 0][yields] D*[sup+] D[sup -]; and S= -0.05[+-] 0.45(stat)[+-] 0.05(syst) and C= 0.12[+-] 0.30(stat)[+-] 0.05(syst) for B[sup 0][yields] D*[sup -] D[sup+]; where S corresponds to CP violation in the interference of mixing and decay and C corresponds to CP violation in decay.

Book Measurement of CP Violating Asymmetries in B0 to rho Pi 0 Using a Time Dependent Dalitz Plot Analysis

Download or read book Measurement of CP Violating Asymmetries in B0 to rho Pi 0 Using a Time Dependent Dalitz Plot Analysis written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present the preliminary measurement of CP-violating asymmetries in B° → (??)° →??−?° decays using a time-dependent Dalitz plot analysis. The results are obtained from a data sample of 213 million?(4S) → B{bar B} decays, collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC. This analysis extends the narrow-rho quasi-two-body approximation used in the previous analysis, by taking into account the interference between the rho resonances of the three charges. We measure 16 coefficients of the bilinear form factor terms occurring in the time-dependent decay rate of the B° meson with the use of a maximum-likelihood fit. We derive the physically relevant quantities from these coefficients. We measure the direct CP-violation parameters A{sub??} = -0.088 ± 0.049 ± 0.013 and C = 0.34 ± 0.11 ± 0.05, where the first errors are statistical and the second systematic. For the mixing-induced CP-violation parameter we find S = -0.10 ± 0.14 ± 0.04, and for the dilution and strong phase shift parameters respectively, we obtain?C = 0.15 ± 0.11 ± 0.03 and?S = 0.22 ± 0.15 ± 0.03. For the angle alpha of the Unitarity Triangle we measure (113−1--{sup +27} ± 6){sup o}, while only a weak constraint is achieved at the significance level of more than two standard deviations. Finally, for the relative strong phase?{sub ±} between the B° →?−?+ and B° → {rho}+?− transitions we find ( -67−31{sup +28} {+-} 7) deg, with a similarly weak constraint at two standard deviations and beyond.

Download or read book Measurement of CP Violation Observables and Parameters for the Decays B pm to DK pm written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study the decay B− → DK*− using a sample of 379 x 106?(4S) → B{bar B} events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B-factory. We perform a 'GLW' analysis where the D meson decays into either a CP-even (CP+) eigenstate (KK−,?+?−), CP-odd (CP- ) eigenstate (K{sub S}°?°, K{sub S}°?, K{sub S}°?) or a non-CP state (K−?+). We also analyze D meson decays into K+?− from a Cabibbo-favored {bar D}° decay or doubly suppressed D° decay ('ADS' analysis). We measure observables that are sensitive to the CKM angle?: the partial-rate charge asymmetries A{sub CP±}, the ratios R{sub CP±} of the B-decay branching fractions in CP± and non-CP decay, the ratio R{sub ADS} of the charge-averaged branching fractions, and the charge asymmetry A{sub ADS} of the ADS decays: A{sub CP+} = 0.09 ± 0.13 ± 0.06, A{sub CP-} = -0.23 ± 0.21 ± 0.07, R{sub CP+} = 2.17 ± 0.35 ± 0.09, R{sub CP-} = 1.03 ± 0.27 ± 0.13, R{sub ADS} = 0.066 ± 0.031 ± 0.010, and A{sub ADS} = -0.34 {+-} 0.43 {+-} 0.16, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Combining all the measurements and using a frequentist approach yields the magnitude of the ratio between the Cabibbo-suppressed and favored amplitudes, r{sub B} = 0.31 with a one (two) sigma confidence level interval of [0.24, 0.38] ([0.17, 0.43]). The value r{sub B} = 0 is excluded at the 3.3 sigma level. A similar analysis excludes values of? in the intervals [0, 7]{sup o}, [55, 111]{sup o}, and [175, 180]{sup o} ([85, 99]{sup o}) at the one (two) sigma confidence level.

Download or read book Measurement of CP Violation Parameters with a Dalitz Plot Analysis of B to D pi pi pi0 K written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report the results of a CP violation analysis of the decay B{sup {+-}} → D{sub??−?°}K{sup {+-}}, where D{sub?+?−?°} indicates a neutral D meson detected in the final state?+?−?°, excluding K{sub S}°?°. The analysis makes use of 324 million e+e− → B{bar B} events recorded by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II e+e− storage ring. By analyzing the?+?−?° Dalitz plot distribution and the B{sup {+-}} → D{sub?+?−?°} K{sup {+-}} branching fraction and decay rate asymmetry, we calculate parameters related to the phase? of the CKM unitarity triangle. We also measure the magnitudes and phases of the components of the D° → {pi}+{pi}−{pi}° decay amplitude.

This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a measurement of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B meson decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The data sample consists of 29.7 fb[sup -1] recorded at the[Upsilon](4S) resonance and 3.9 fb[sup -1] off-resonance. One of the neutral B mesons, which are produced in pairs at the[Upsilon](4S), is fully reconstructed in the CP decay modes J/[psi] K[sub S][sup 0], [psi](2S) K[sub S][sup 0], [chi][sub c1] K[sub S][sup 0], J/[psi] K*[sup 0] (K*[sup 0][yields] K[sub S][sup 0][pi][sup 0]) and J/[psi] K[sub L][sup 0], or in flavor-eigenstate modes involving D(*)[pi]/[rho]/[sub 1] and J/[psi] K*[sup 0] (K*[sup 0][yields] K[sup+][pi][sup -]). The flavor of the other neutral B meson is tagged at the time of its decay, mainly with the charge of identified leptons and kaons. A neural network tagging algorithm is used to recover events without a clear lepton or kaon tag. The proper time elapsed between the decays is determined by measuring the distance between the decay vertices. Wrong-tag probabilities, the time-difference resolution function, and the B[sup 0]-[bar B][sup 0] oscillation frequency[Delta]m[sub d]are measured with a sample of about 6350 fully-reconstructed B[sup 0] decays in hadronic flavor-eigenstate modes. A maximum-likelihood fit to this flavor eigenstate sample finds[Delta]m[sub d]= 0.516[+-] 0.016 (stat)[+-] 0.010 (syst) ps[sup -1]. The value of the asymmetry amplitude sin2[beta] is determined from a simultaneous maximum-likelihood fit to the time-difference distribution of the flavor-eigenstate sample and about 642 tagged B[sup 0] decays in the CP-eigenstate modes. We find sin2[beta]= 0.59[+-] 0.14 (stat)[+-] 0.05 (syst), demonstrating that CP violation exists in the neutral B meson system. We also determine the value of the CP violation parameter[lambda]= 0.93[+-] 0.09 (stat)[+-] 0.03 (syst), which is consistent with the expectation of[lambda]= 1 for no direct CP violation.
