Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors present a preliminary measurement of CP-violation parameters in the decay B° → KK−K{sub S}°, using approximately 465 million B{bar B} events collected by the BABAR detector at SLAC. Reconstructing the neutral kaon as K{sub S}° →?+?− or K{sub S}° →?°?°, they analyze the Dalitz plot distribution and measure fractions to intermediate states. They extract CP parameters from the asymmetries in amplitudes and phases between B° and {bar B}° decays across the Dalitz plot. From a fit to the whole Dalitz plot, they measure?{sub eff} = 0.44 ± 0.07 ± 0.02, A{sub CP} = 0.03 ± 0.07 ± 0.02, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic. For decays to?K{sub S}°, they measure?{sub eff} = 0.13 ± 0.13 ± 0.02, A{sub CP} = 0.14 ± 0.19 ± 0.02. For decays to f0K{sub S}°, they measure?{sub eff} = 0.15 ± 0.13 ± 0.03, A{sub CP} = 0.01 ± 0.26 ± 0.07. From a fit to the region of the Dalitz plot with m{sub K{sup +}K−}> 1.1 GeV/c2, they measure?{sub eff} = 0.52 ± 0.08 ± 0.03, A{sub CP} = 0.05 ± 0.09 ± 0.04.

Book excerpt: The authors analyze the decay B° 2!KK−K° using 383 million B{bar B} events collected by the BABAR detector at SLAC to extract CP violation parameter values over the Dalitz plot. Combining all KK−K° events, they find A{sub CP} = -0.015 ± 0.077 ± 0.053 and [beta]{sub eff} = 0.352 ± 0.076 ± 0.026 rad, corresponding to a CP violation significance of 4.8[sigma]. A second solution near [pi]/2 - [beta]{sub eff} is disfavored with a significance of 4.5[sigma]. They also report A{sub CP} and [beta]{sub eff} separately for decays to [phi](1020)K°, f0(980)K°, and K+K−K° with m{sub K{sup +}K−}> 1.1 GeV/c2.

Book excerpt: We report a measurement of CP-violating asymmetries in B{sup 0} {yields} ({rho}{pi}){sup 0} {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup 0} decays using a time-dependent Dalitz plot analysis. The results are obtained from a data sample of 347 million {Upsilon}(4S) {yields} B{bar B} decays, collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC. We measure 26 coefficients of the bilinear form factor terms occurring in the time-dependent decay rate of the B{sup 0} meson and derive the physically relevant quantities from these coefficients. In particular we find a three standard deviation evidence of direct CP-violation in the B{sup 0} {yields} {rho}{sup {+-}}{pi}{sup {-+}} decays, with systematic uncertainties included. We also achieve a constraint of the angle {alpha} of the Unitarity Triangle. All results presented are preliminary.

Book excerpt: We present results for a time-dependent Dalitz plot measurement of CP-violating asymmetries in the mode B^0 --> pi^+ pi^- pi^0, dominated by B^0 --> rho^\pm pi^\mp (rho^\pm --> pi^\pm pi^0) decays. Our dataset is derived from the complete sample of 471 x 10^6 B-Bbar meson pairs collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, operating on the Upsilon(4S) resonance. We extract parameters describing the time-dependent B^0 --> rho pi decay probabilities and CP asymmetries, including C, DeltaC, S, and DeltaS, finding these measurements to be consistent with the results of previous analyses. Additionally, we present a two-dimensional likelihood scan of the direct CP-violation asymmetry parameters for B^0 --> rho^\pm pi^\mp decays, finding the results to be consistent with direct CP violation at ~ 2 sigma significance. Finally, we present information on the CP-violating parameter alpha, corresponding to an angle in the unitarity triangle associated with the CKM quark-mixing matrix. We perform a likelihood scan of alpha that incorporates constraints from B^\pm --> rho pi measurements by means of isospin relationships. A robustness study assessing the reliability with which alpha is extracted provides important insights into the interpretation of this result.

Book Studies of CP Violation in Charmless Three Body b Hadron Decays

This book was released on 2018-11-02 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights two essential analyses of data collected during the LHCb experiment, based on the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The first comprises the first observation and studies of matter-antimatter asymmetries in two three-body b-baryon decays, paving the way for more precise measurements of the relatively unknown decay properties of b-baryon decays. The second is an analysis of a charged B meson decay to three charged pions, where previously large matter-antimatter asymmetries were observed in a model-independent analysis. Here a model of the decay amplitude is constructed using the unitarity-conserving ‘K-matrix’ model for the scalar contributions, so as to gain an understanding of how the previously observed matter-antimatter asymmetries arise; further, the model’s construction yields the most precise and comprehensive study of this decay mode to date.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We measure the time-dependent CP asymmetry parameters in B° 2!KK−K° based on a data sample of approximately 227 million B-meson pairs recorded at the [Upsilon](4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B-meson Factory at SLAC. We reconstruct two-body B° decays to [phi](1020)K{sub s}° and [phi](1020)K{sub L}°, and the three-body decay KK−K{sub s}° with [phi](1020)K{sub s}° excluded. For the B° 2![phi]K° decays, they measure sin 2[beta]{sub eff}([phi]K°) = +0.50 ± 0.25(stat){sub -0.04}{sup +0.07}(syst). The B° 2!K+K−K{sub s}° decays are dominated by K+K− S-wave, as determined from an angular analysis; they measure sin 2[beta]{sub eff} (K+K−K{sub s}°) = +0.55 ± 0.22(stat) ± 0.04(syst) ± 0.11(CP), where the last error is due to the uncertainty in the fraction of CP-even contributions to the decay amplitude. We find no evidence for direct CP violation.

Book Time Dependent CP Asymmetries and Branching RatioMeasurements in Charmless Three Body B Decays at BABAR

This book was released on 2007 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work we presented measurements of CP violation and decay rates of B decays in final states not involving a charm quark in the final state. In particular, the time-dependent CP asymmetries of decays which proceed through b 2!s elementary transition is a particularly sensitive probe of physics beyond the Standard Model. In fact, even if the precise measurements of CP conserving and CP violating processes show the success of the CKM picture of the flavour physics, the sector of b 2!s transitions is still not strongly constrained and leaves room for new physics contributions. In particular, we considered the decays which have the cleanest theoretical prediction within the Standard Model: B° 2![phi]K° and B° 2!K{sub s}°K{sub s}°K{sub s}° [beta]{sub eff}{sup SM} = 0.379. We examined the former with a completely new approach with respect to the past: the study of CP violation in the whole KK−K° phase space through a time-dependent Dalitz plot analysis. With this approach, we simultaneously measured the CP-violating asymmetries of the [phi]KJ°, f0(980)K° resonant and KK−K° non-resonant contributions, avoiding one of the largest uncertainties which affected the previous measurements of B° 2![phi]K°. We find [beta]{sub eff}(B° 2![phi]K°) = 0.06 ± 0.16 ± 0.05, which is lower than the Standard Model expectation, but it is consistent with it within two standard deviations. Moreover, only a recently developed experimental technique, which allows the determination of the position of B decay vertex when no charged tracks are originating from it, has made possible the measurement of the time-dependent CP asymmetry in B° 2!K{sub s}°K{sub s}°K{sub s}° decays. The mixing-induced CP parameter S in the Standard Model should be equal to sin 2[beta] parameter, which is measured with high precision in B 2![c{bar c}]K° decays by the B-factories. This statement is true, in the Standard Model, with excellent approximation for the decays studied in this work. The summary of the measurements in the b 2!s sector is shown in Fig. 9.8 A naive average of the b 2!s penguins, which does not account for the correlations existing among [phi]K°, f0(980)K° and K+K−K°, and that includes also modes with larger theoretical uncertainties, shows that -[eta]{sub CP} x S is lower than sin 2[beta]. This is not an evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model, but the systematic deviation from the expected value is an hint that there is room for it. More compelling evidence for new physics could be obtained measuring significant deviation in each decay channel from Standard Model prediction. Currently all the measurement are statistically limited and therefore an increase in accumulated statistics will shed more light into this quest for New Physics.

Book excerpt: We report the results of a CP violation analysis of the decay B{sup {+-}} → D{sub??−?°}K{sup {+-}}, where D{sub?+?−?°} indicates a neutral D meson detected in the final state?+?−?°, excluding K{sub S}°?°. The analysis makes use of 324 million e+e− → B{bar B} events recorded by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II e+e− storage ring. By analyzing the?+?−?° Dalitz plot distribution and the B{sup {+-}} → D{sub?+?−?°} K{sup {+-}} branching fraction and decay rate asymmetry, we calculate parameters related to the phase? of the CKM unitarity triangle. We also measure the magnitudes and phases of the components of the D° → {pi}+{pi}−{pi}° decay amplitude.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics, the phase of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) quark-mixing matrix [1, 2] is the only source of CP violation in the quark sector. Due to the interference between mixing and decay, this phase can be observed in measurements of time-dependent CP asymmetries of B° mesons. In the SM, CP asymmetries in b 2!s{bar s}s decays, such as B° 2!KK−K°, are expected to be nearly equal to those observed in tree-dominated b 2!{bar c}s decays [3]. However, because in the SM the former are dominated by loop amplitudes, new particles in those loops potentially introduce new physics at the same order as the SM process. Within the SM, deviations from the expected CP asymmetries in B° 2!KK−K° decays depend on the Dalitz plot position, but are expected to be small and positive [4]. In particular, for the decay B° 2![phi]K° they are expected to be less than 4%. BABAR extracts the time-dependent CP-violation parameters by taking into account different amplitudes and phases across the B° and {bar B}° Dalitz plots, while Belle measures it separately for B° 2![phi]K° and the rest of K+K−K° events, neglecting interference between intermediate states. The analyses presented here are based on 347 (535) million B{bar B} pairs collected with the BABAR (Belle) detector at the SLAC PEP-II (KEKB) e+e− asymmetric-energy collider. Data are collected on the [Upsilon](4S) resonance, while a fraction of about 10% is collected at approximately 40 MeV below the [Upsilon](4S) resonance, and it is used to study the background arising from e+e− 2!q{bar q} (q = u, d, s, c) continuum events. The BABAR and Belle detectors are described in detail elsewhere [5].

Download or read book Study of CP Violation in Dalitz Plot Analyses of B Meson Decays to Three Kaons written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Standard Model (SM) explains CP violation in terms of the CKM matrix. The BABAR experiment was designed mainly to test the CKM model in B decays. B decays that proceed through b → s loop diagrams, of which B → KKK decays are an example, are sensitive to new physics effects that could lead to deviations from the CKM predictions for CP violation. We present studies of CP violation in the decays B+ → K+K-K+, B+ → KS0KS0K+, and B0 → K+K-KS0, using a Dalitz plot amplitude analysis. These studies are based on approximately 470 million B$\bar{B}$ decays collected by BABAR at the PEP-II collider at SLAC. We perform measurements of time-dependent CP violation in B0 → K+K-KS0, including B0 → [Phi]KS0. We measure a CP-violating phase [beta]eff ([Phi]KS0) = 0.36 ± 0.11 ± 0.04 rad., in agreement with the SM. This is the world's most precise measurement of this quantity. We also measure direct CP asymmetries in all three decay modes, including the direct CP asymmetry ACP ([Phi]K+) = (12.8 ± 4.4 ± 1.3)%, which is 2.8 sigma away from zero. This measurement is in tension with the SM, which predicts an asymmetry of a few percent. We also study the resonant and nonresonant features in the B → KKK Dalitz plots. We find that the hypothetical scalar fX(1500) resonance, introduced by prior analyses to explain an unknown peak in the mKK spectrum, cannot adequately describe the data. We conclude instead that the fX(1500) can be explained as the sum of the f0(1500), f'2(1525), and f0(1710) resonances, removing the need for the hypothetical fX(1500). We also find that an exponential nonresonant model, used by previous analyses to describe the broad nonresonant feature seen in B → KKK decays, cannot fully model the data. We introduce a new nonresonant model that contains more free parameters, allows for phase motion, and contains both S-wave and P-wave components.

Book Measurement of CP Violating Asymmetries in B0 Decays to CP Eigenstates

Download or read book Measurement of CP Violating Asymmetries in B0 Decays to CP Eigenstates written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present measurements of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays to several CP eigenstates. The measurement uses a data sample of 23 million[Upsilon](4S)[yields] B[bar B] decays collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we find events where one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a CP eigenstate containing charmonium and the flavor of the other neutral B meson is determined from its decay products. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the Standard Model is proportional to sin2[beta], is derived from the decay time distributions in such events. The result is sin2[beta]= 0.34[+-] 0.20 (stat)[+-] 0.05 (syst).
