The first section of the thesis describes the observation of a candidate for the chi_b(3P) bottomonium states. This represented the first observation of a new particle at the LHC and its existence was subsequently confirmed by D0 and LHCb experiments. The second part of the thesis presents measurements of the prompt and non-prompt production of the chi_c1 and chi_c2 charmonium states in proton-proton collisions. These measurements are compared to several theoretical predictions and can be used to inform the development of theoretical models of quarkonium production.

Book excerpt: The authors reconstruct the charmonium mesons J/[psi], [psi](2S) and[chi][sub c] using a sample of 8.46 x 10[sup 6] B[bar B] events collected by the BABAR detector operating at e[sup+]e[sup -] center of mass energies near the[Lambda](4S) resonance. by measuring rates relative to the branching fraction of the J/[psi], they obtain preliminary inclusive B branching fractions of (0.25[+-] 0.02[+-] 0.02)% to the[psi](2S) and (0.39[+-] 0.04[+-] 0.04)% to the[chi][sub c1], and set a 90% confidence level limit of 0.24% on decays through the[chi][sub c2].

Book excerpt: With a sample of 232 x 106 [Upsilon](4S) 2!B{bar B} events collected with the BABAR detector, we study the decay B 2!p{bar p}K excluding charmonium decays to p{bar p}. We measure a branching fraction [Beta](B+ 2!p{bar p}K+) = (6.7 ± 0.5 ± 0.4) x 10−6. An enhancement at low p{bar p} mass is observed and the Dalitz plot asymmetry suggests dominance of the penguin amplitude in this B decay. We search for a pentaquark candidate [Theta]*{sup ++} decaying into pK+ in the mass range 1.43 to 2.00 GeV/c2 and set limits on [Beta](B+ 2![Theta]*{sup ++} {bar p}) x [Beta]([Theta]*{sup ++} 2!pK+) at the 10−7 level.

We report the first measurement of the rates for inclusive charm production separately for charged and neutral B mesons. Combining measurements of the decay rate of B{sup 0} {yields} D*{sub s}{sup +}D*{sup -} obtained with a partial reconstruction technique and the complete reconstruction of B{sup 0} {yields} D*{sub s}{sup +}D*{sup -} with D{sub s}{sup +} {yields} {phi}{pi}{sup +}, we obtain the most precise measurement of {Beta}(D{sub s}{sup +} {yields} {phi}{pi}{sup +}). We present an update of the measurements of the branching fractions of exclusive B decays to J/{psi}, {psi}(2S), {chi}{sub c1}, {chi}{sub c2} and a kaon or a K*. In addition, we show preliminary results on exclusive decay rates to final states with baryons, or newly-discovered particles, such as D*{sub sJ}(2317), D{sub sJ}(2460){sup +}, and the X(3872).
